A Thank You To Jeep Cherokee Drivers & Sweet Wheeling Action!

  • Jeep Cherokee drivers are incredible to watch. They push their Jeeps harder than anybody I know. They work with what they've got and beat the snot out of their rigs. I've been making offroad videos for six years, and whenever I need more footage for a video I know to look for the Jeep Cherokees. They ALWAYS do fun stuff and disregard their 4x4's body. Open diffs & missing windows, these guys just go for the skinny pedal. I made this video to give thanks to all guys that don't care about the chrome- they just want to wheel!

    There's really nothing more amusing than watching a pristine built wrangler on 40" tires with a fat v8 plod down the path at one mile per hour, following the trail blazed by a stock cherokee with half the body panels missing and the throttle wide open.

      Treat it well and it will treat you well. I bought mine 3 years ago at 17 years old and I do an oil change and filter every 3 thousand miles or every 3 months the only repairs I've had to do was brakes a couple of ball joints and a radiator replacement. Just today I found out my cps is bad so I'm replacing that tomorrow and it's an easy job. The xj is very easy to work on and super reliable. Congrats on your new used masterpiece of automotive technology.

    I admire rock crawlers. These guys are rock bashers.
    That having been said, the second generation Cherokees had almost ideal proportions for exploring off pavement. My wife and I seriously considered buying one in 1987 but she had much more of a lead foot back then than she has now. I was worried that if we got one with that inline six and If she were to drive it, I'd be buying a new pair of tires every couple of weeks.

      just use ones that are not the best aesthetically, maybe some rust and have super high mileage (like 300k) to abuse.

    Restoring a 99 cherokee classic 4x4 right now. Engine overhaul, getting the dents out, new factory color paint. Gonna take a while but I think it’ll be worth it in the end.

  • @dwaynecain5608
    @dwaynecain5608 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My first 4x4 was a 1998 Cherokee Sport. It was bone stock except for a good set of all terrain tires. Although I didn’t do any rock crawling I did take it down some pretty gnarly trails. That beast took me everywhere I every decided to go with the exception of once. The hole I set the front tires in that day turned out to be bigger than I had counted on. I’ve been sick for a few years and have no vehicle right now but you better bet I would be proud to have another Cherokee.

    Man, I feel like you made this video just for me. After this weekend I ended up with a bent B pillar, a window that won't roll down, a door that you have to kick to closed, and a busted back window. all the wrangler guys were crawling through the rocks while I was doing full throttle hill climbs. I swear, an XJ on 35s locked f/r will go places that wranglers on 40s can't (or are too scared to). I've also been driving it back 250 miles each way to go to the nearest offroad park for the last 7 years.

    • @jake-mv5oi
      @jake-mv5oi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Big Dogs Offroad in Gore, VA is the closest place to me, but I've been all over. Last year went to Rausch creek in PA, Ouray, CO with NAXJA, and the year before that I went home to TX and wheeled at hidden falls near Austin. All are a little different but have some great trails... and the skinny pedal makes them all even better!

      I had a 95 with a standard tranny, I drove it for 12 years and had 296k on it. Unfortunately, it got totalled on I-25 here in Colorado. I bought a 2010 Grand Cherokee and drove it around. It just wasn't the same though. My daughter is getting her license soon so she's getting the 2010, I went out and bought a 1998 Cherokee sport. Back to my roots LOL!

  • @jamoliverj
    @jamoliverj 7 ปีที่แล้ว +225

    Cool videos, but this is why XJs are a diminishing resource. I predict that people are going to learn that an XJ is something to look after and make last (while still wheeling lots of course), and not something to abuse and send to the wrecking yard prematurely. Look at what is coming of the assembly line these days! Self driving, computerized, uncostomizable, plastic !@# boxes. Once these vintage vehicles are used up, that's it. We are not getting any more. Imagine making do with a tupperware 2014+ Cherokee on the trail. Sad days ahead. - you don't know what you got till it's gone.

    • @jake-mv5oi
      @jake-mv5oi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    • @jamoliverj
      @jamoliverj 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      You're right, you can still find a good XJ if you look, but it's getting harder and more expensive to locate a good clean one that hasn't already been cut-up and used-up. It's good to remember that there use to be millions of passenger pigeons too.

    For those trying to set zj's and xj's apart, I've owned both and can tell you both are bad ass. Front suspension identical, zj's just come automatically with rear coils and have an option for a bigger engine and a few more goodies. Although I lean towards zj's after building both and also a yj (love my jeeps), zj's a bit better in my opinion, just a bit more cash to build but both are amazing done right!

    I'll take a stock ZJ or XJ with 33s that rub like hell and out wheel just about anything and have waaaay more fun while doing it! Only mods "required" cut sway bar end links and ratchet strap gas tank behind back seat, it helps to get rid of the glass too...

    My first cherokee was a absolute tank it had massive bull bar on fron light guards rock sliders and roll cage on outside it was the 4.0 tho n in uk its just unpractical very unpractical i have a diesel cherokee now i regret selling mu old one tho id love the parts off it, and tbey get anywhere people are surprised when i say i dont use lockers just trac lok limited slip diff because trac lok really works good and is nearly as good as a locker my jeep gets everywhere that my mates disco 1 with lockers does so i think alot of people underestimate jeeps they think if its nor a wrangler its not good but all old jeeps are boss any before 05

  • @jaybourbon8608

    Love that first white jeep!! Thats how you wheel!!! What size tires and lift you think he has on that? That is the perfect size in my opinion and as you can see you can wheel the shit out of it.. I think the bigger you go the more prone you are to breaking parts. He running 3" on 31's? My guess.. Definitely not a RC LIFT . LOL..
