Not all reels cast as far as others do. However, if you tune reels for light weight lures and increase lure weight they normally cast fine with heavier lures. Backlashes usually are all generated by increased casting stroke power. If you are driving a car at 70-miles per hour, you need more breaking to stop than stopping at 35-miles per hour. If you are driving a bus at 70-miles per hour, it takes more distance to stop than a car. Reel braking system that produce smooth consistent braking backlash less regardless of using friction or magnetic brakes. Shimano DC reels backlash less because they are able to compensate for changes in the casting power stroke using electronics. Daiwa reels use a mechanical system. However if you try hard enough you can still make any of them backlash. Smooth braking produces longer casts and fewer backlashes. Thumb free casting is still not completely fool proof. You can spend your day fishing fiddling with reel brakes or fishing, but likely, you will catch more fish when you stop fiddling with reel settings.
Daiwa literally released a video showing how to set up spool tension, youre supposed to tighten it until there is no spool play then back it off one click
@@B3nnyboy Diawa you are supposed to set the spool and only adjust your brakes. Once you hit that sweet spot with the tension you will know. I can cast this and my tatula 100 (regular version) without backlash and skip 90% backlash free. When I do backlash it's entirely my fault not thumbing enough or just sucking at skipping 😂😂.
The advice at the first of this video is the absolute best advice I've seen yet on what to do during the pandemic. I pray for blessing on The Reel Test guy. Its a rare thing these days to see a person profess his belief as a christian without apology. Its sad its that way, but it is the way it is.
Still have my old Daiwa PT-33SH from the first year they were made. I cannot recall the year exactly. I grew up in a very small, very rural area in Kentucky. It was a river bottom area where a creek and a river confluence. I worked all summer hauling hay and cutting and hanging tobacco to buy that reel. Up until that point all I had fished with was a reed pole (LOL) or a Zebco 202. Didn't have a clue about what a Baitcaster Reel was. If memory serves, I gave $99 dollars for it { which of course I didn't tell my parents) which was an insane amount of money for the way we were living. I still remember taking it out the first time. I was as excited as a young boy could be. Then the first cast came and y'all know what happened, LOL! I just couldn't imagine how such an expensive reel would do that! I cut the line off the spool (because it bird nested so bad there was no straightening it out) restrung it, tried again, and y'all know what happened! I tried again and again, to no avail. I sat on the river bank and had tears streaming down my face thinking I had wasted all that money and been duped, LOL! I slowly and finally figured it out. I still love that Reel! It's in Great shape and works great!
Shimano solution to reduce backlash by using dc , daiwa solution to reduce backlash by using sv spool, electronic will broke someday, but mech component only wear & tear , now you see which company is pioneer in advance technology
(my opinion) they are both amazing reels you cannot go wrong either way ,you will be happy with either one you choose the 2020 sv tw103 uses the diawa 100 size frame so it is small and very easy to palm. Without knowing your specific needs I will just put it this way if you want to save 40 to 50 bucks buy the 100 if an extra 40 to 50 dollars isn't a big deal pick up the sv tw it looks Abit fancier and has that sv spool for most of us anglers there isn't such a substantial performance difference that you would instantly prefer one over the other. I already had the 100 and had went to buy the tatula elite and when I got to the store they had the sv tw 103 and I bought it over the elite model and couldn't be happier with both. If you decide to buy the sv just make sure it's the 2020 model if you want the smaller profile, the 2020 doesn't have the colored accents and it has the tatula logo on the side plate like the 100 does.
Great video as always, intro was also fine with me. After seeing this I will stick with my SLX and Curado's I believe, was thinking about the Daiwa because of the T bar casting wing.
Hey thanks for this vid. So not sure I understand what the point is. Is Daiwa saying "we" do not need to set the spool tension knob. are they saying we "should not" set the spool tension knob. I'm just not sure I understand the point of not setting the spool tension knob. Does it not have a working spool tension knob? Thanks for any insight you can provide me. Stay safe.
you can still adjust but they say its very hard to turn the knob. Daiwa does not want you to set the spool tension like alot of people do a centrifugal brake reel. Magnetic brakes generally cast shorter than centrifugal so they dont want you to hinder the performance even more by tightening the spool tension.
Thanks for the video. I bought the 2017 a couple months ago as they were on clearance. I'd love to see a head to head casting distance on the Ned Rig or something in that 5-7g range. And definitely when the Curado 70 comes out. I don't really have a need to pitch much.
Adjust the spool tensioner per instructions in the box. Own 3 and can bomb a 1/4 oz weight 60 yards on 6 with 12 lb Ande line with no thumb and zero backlash.
Nice video. Say what u feel, the people in the comments that are negative are just scared and don’t know where to go or what to do. They rely on there own knowledge and will deny there own fear. Thanks for the vid!
Curious what is the casting distance difference between the Tatula SV and Shimano slx DC on 1/4-1/2oz lures. Just trying to figure out if it’s a big difference

Can the sv tw spool be used in the Elite tatula? If the spool of the reel tatula elite has real advantages. In your opinion, which is better reel? Thank you for your attention.
I bought this reel on a whim today, knowing nothing about it. Just looked good on the Mojo Bass I was buying. Brought it home, spooled it up and tied on a buzzbait, then adjusted the spool tension to match the weight like I would any other reel. I guess I messed up the factory settings? I dont see how tuning it certain weights/lures could hurt.
@@THEREELTEST Yea I cant imagine it would be hard to get back as it didnt take much to get it where I wanted. I just cant imagine putting a spool tension knob on something when its recommended you leave it alone. Thanks!

I have the older models of the Tatula SV's and absolutey love em !.... Purchased a new model and not so thrilled with the zero adjuster. I've been using baitcasters for years and know how to adjust to suit my style, conditions and let weight. Overriding the factory setting voids the warranty, and I actually set mine loser than how these come out of the box. Great reel, very smooth, but zero adjuster no bueno in my book.
Casting distance, u say there are better options out there. Can u name a few of those reels for me. And in your opinion, how much distance might i gain with these other reels vs this new Tatula reel?
The Curado 70 for sure. SLX DC for sure, and depends on the lure. A big top water or rattletrap maybe 15-20 ft. I did a similiar test with the Met/Bantam/Chronarch MGL at the same place, was standing farther away and I clearly remember nearly hitting the other side with the same top water lure. Neither Tatulas really came close.
I appreciate your videos. I’ve started down the road of JDM reels because of your collection. I’ve collected the SLX DC 70, Scorpion DC, and just ordered the JDM Tatula SV TW. And I have the Curado DC. I find they all do something well. But looking for the perfect skipping reel.
@@MrGeri95 I actually purchased the JDM Daiwa Tatula SV TW. I believe it has alumium alloy gear rather than US brass gear. Other than the shorter handle, I think it’s about perfect. I was skipping lures out of the box as soon as it was spooled. The factory set, no touch tension knob is pretty sweet.
Hello, I live in Araucária in the state of Paraná (Brazil) and I like your tests, this new sv tw was very good! Have you already tested the new Aplhas ct sv 70? And if it did it is better than the new Sv TW?
I have been in the last year been trying to find the best reel for my style and my casting ability, I have tried the Daiwa Tatula SV, Sixgill Wraith(I was excited to try this one out but honestly in my opinion it was overhyped), and Lew's Tournament Speed LFS(is a good reel), and the Lew's Tournament LFS(another good reel), I have to say I really like the Tatula better than all, mechanically reels are important but I also believe casting ability and style dictates which reel is best for you. I found Daiwa for me suits me the best!
After clicking the reel release button do you hold the reel with your thumb just before you cast and then let the spool go? It almost looks like you click the reel release button and don’t hold the spool at all during your back cast, is that the case or not?
Came back just to rewatch this. I've got a Curado DC and a Calcutta conquest DC. Haha. Am only interested in the T-wing system and how good it is. Good video and informative. Thanks!
Please don’t promote fear mongering. I have very important family in the government and médical field. This will all blow over in 5 weeks. All btw great 👍 video as always. Thumbs up.
Cool reels, can't say I'm going to end up getting one of them if I can't BFS it tho. I think it might be fun to get a used Metanium '13 off ebay though.
@@THEREELTEST yeah, bass n bonsai has some kind of BFS spool on his '13 metanium. That old reel can be had for a really decent price, used. There's no way I could afford a new metanium.
I don’t know why you don’t adjust the spoil attention. I thumb feather 90% all my reels so I’m in control at all times to flip, pitch, skip or bomb at any second. But i also don’t use no lures under 3/8 90% of time on my baitcasters. 1/4 to 1/8 goes on my spin reels.
man what a great looking reel and agree the jdm accents on the handle assembly are nicer. i just wish daiwa would ditch the terrible emblem on side of reel and tension knob.
I need some advice: What is the actual model number of the 103 you are using? On Daiwa's site I see two models the TTUSV103HS but on either Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's or Dick's Sporting goods, they list it as TASV103HS which is 13.2 drag and 7.3.1 gear ratio. The TTUSV103HS is 11 drag and 7.1.1 gear ratio. I want to make sure I'm purchasing the right one. Also, is 11 lbs. of drag good enough to catch PIke or Musky or should I lean towards a higher drag ratio. Thanks for the great video and its nice to talk to a Christian. Be Peaceful!
I know your post is old but here is the info you were asking. The reel TTUSV103HS is the newer (2020) model which is the 7.1:1 gear ratio, Bearings 7BB,1RB and the weight is 6.7oz. with Mag Drag @ 11 lbs. The TASV103HS is the older (2017) model which is the 7.3:1 gear ratio, Bearings 2CRBB,5BB,1RB and the weight is 7.2oz. with Mag Drag @ 13 lbs. For Pike or Musky fishing I would go with the 2017 Model, TASV103HS
ould you please indicate what is the value of fishing reels imported from Japan or Australia that must pay customs taxes upon entering the United States? I think that from 800 dollars they must pay taxes. Could you clarify this information?
Nice, review thank you for sharing. I'll stick with my older Steez & Zillions. I just haven't become a fan of the Tatula Reels. They all feel to bulky in my hand.
@@THEREELTEST l looked at them at the Bassmaster Classic, at Daiwa Booth & The Tackle Trap Booth. I am trying to like them, but guess I'm spoiled... The Tackle Trap has some GREAT DEALS on all Daiwa Reels too! They just repaired my Steez... they are also a service center & Custom Reel Shop...
I recently bought this reel and I’ve been having problems. I don’t know if this is the ‘norm’ with this reel but the spool on my right hand has a very large gap and with my experience there shouldn’t one that big or none at all. The gap is literally between 1/16 and 2/16 inches big. I have braided line on mine and the line has already gotten caught in the gap and raveled around the spool rod. I have to take off the side of the reel then unravel the line from that spot and I’ve done it multiple times already. Can someone please help? Thanks.
Hi, i'm just thinking about my first bfs reel, but i really want one with drag clicking sound. I read that it's rare at that king of reels, Can U tell me what choice do i have?
Just out of curiosity, why put that disclaimer into the video? I understand that people turn to religion in times of trouble, but what purpose does that really pose? Plus, revelations was written 400 years after the death of Jesus. So I don’t know how much validity it actual holds in continuity to the Bible. After all, didn’t god state that he or she would never destroy the humanity again in the book of genesis? I’m not religious by any means, and posting that intro just causes panic.
THE REEL TEST Curado 71 XH or HG ?And what about the best magnetic bfs reel in its budget? And there is a popular opinion that magnetic brake systems are better for jig and for light lures - do you agree with it?
it's tough to consider these when you can get a brand new jdm chronarch mgl for just a tad over $200 and by tad I mean $205 on ebay. i'd know because it's exactly what i did. i don't like how these tatulas palm unfortunately. i'm curious if the zillions are that much more refined. @thereeltest...do yo have an absolute favorite reel? also, keep checking this channel for the new metanium mgl, but do realize how very difficult they are to acquire right now.
I just bought a 2017 sv and have not used it yet but it makes a popping sound when the reel handle stops moving like something is popping back into place. Any ideas what it might be.
AMEN brother, the first video ive seen with some good advice about the virus finally, Repent of your sins, Forgive those you are angry at and have faith in God.
i think it would be better if you use colored braid so we viewers can read how far the lure could go. . specially for some people like me that don't have any clue how far is yards/feet/meters and hate gopro when it comes to cast distance review LOL!!!
Also, just an idea, any chance you could do the casting distance test on a lawn etc with a tape to measure each distance u cast. It would take the guess work out of reporting the distance for us AND you wont lose any $15 lures. Its a win win situation.
@@CaptainBax i did not know casting on grass, for example at the park, would damage the braid line. Thx! Im new to baitcasters and braid line. I would never saw that coming! Neither Tatulas really came close.
thank you so much because I had too many question about zero adjuster and spool overun before
Loved the intro🙏🏻 many people are lacking faith these days, this is something that everyone needs.
Got mine today. Using it tomorrow
I have a2017 model, do you know if I can get a chameleon spool for it, for a bfs stuff?
I appreciate your videos. I’ve started down the road of JDM reels because of your collection. I’ve collected the SLX DC 70, Scorpion DC, and just ordered the JDM Tatula SV TW. And I have the Curado DC. I find they all do something well. But looking for the perfect skipping reel.
Have you tried the Shimano Grappler?
Try a curado or even an slx, you will not be sorry.
After clicking the reel release button do you hold the reel with your thumb just before you cast and then let the spool go? It almost looks like you click the reel release button and don’t hold the spool at all during your back cast, is that the case or not?
you have to hold the reel in place when winding up to cast, there's no other way to hold your line in place from flying out
When are you going to do the skipping test of this reel?
He’s not, he’s a distance guy lmao
Came back just to rewatch this.
I've got a Curado DC and a Calcutta conquest DC. Haha. Am only interested in the T-wing system and how good it is.
Good video and informative. Thanks!
Please don’t promote fear mongering. I have very important family in the government and médical field. This will all blow over in 5 weeks. All btw great 👍 video as always. Thumbs up.
I think he was saying the exact opposite. Virus will pass on but if religious bigger issues don't just pass on.
@@19DESERTFOX91 exactly! man made viruses and what not are nothing compared to Gods coming wrath on this world and the unrepentant!
5 weeks lol
Cool reels, can't say I'm going to end up getting one of them if I can't BFS it tho. I think it might be fun to get a used Metanium '13 off ebay though.
they have released a bfs spool on Aliexpress for the old model, Im sure the new one will get one too
@@THEREELTEST yeah, bass n bonsai has some kind of BFS spool on his '13 metanium.
Can you use this reel for jerkbait fishing? Lures up to 90 gram
man what a great looking reel and agree the jdm accents on the handle assembly are nicer. i just wish daiwa would ditch the terrible emblem on side of reel and tension knob.
Can you tell me what line you used for the reel?
I don’t even fish, I don’t know what ai am doing here but I am getting one of these.
ould you please indicate what is the value of fishing reels imported from Japan or Australia that must pay customs taxes upon entering the United States? I think that from 800 dollars they must pay taxes. Could you clarify this information?
How does this reel differ from the tatula elite casting reel? They look so similar and weigh the same
Can you test out any of the lews reels?
Is the sv the same color as the ct?
Are you gonna do Shimano metanium 2020 review too?
yes as soon as my pre order comes in to my JDM retailer. The XGs are running behind a little bit
Nice, review thank you for sharing. I'll stick with my older Steez & Zillions. I just haven't become a fan of the Tatula Reels. They all feel to bulky in my hand.
these new ones are pretty nice to palm. maybe you can handle one in the store sometime and see.
The new tatulas are the smallest ones they have made to me the older ones are bulky to me
Have you done any testing on the Zillion SV TW 1016? If so, what are your thoughts? Thanks
no, the fanboys are to scared to send me one lol
Does it have the clicking drag like the Steez?
Greetings from Germany ✌️
The drag clicks the spool tensioner doesn’t
@@ryanperkowski4488i thought about the drag when the fish pulls line.
But thanks, got this reel about a month ago
Just out of curiosity, why put that disclaimer into the video? I understand that people turn to religion in times of trouble, but what purpose does that really pose?
Plus, revelations was written 400 years after the death of Jesus. So I don’t know how much validity it actual holds in continuity to the Bible. After all, didn’t god state that he or she would never destroy the humanity again in the book of genesis? I’m not religious by any means, and posting that intro just causes panic.
God said he would not destroy the world again with a flood. Im not here to preach but Im hoping to plant some seeds.
Well I gotta respect your views, anyway keep up the good work man really enjoy the vids. Plus it’s always fun to watch the fanboys lose it.
hello..how to adjust spool tensioner?can u teach me
You say that if the casting distance is priority,so there are better reels in his budget. What exact reels?)
Curado 70 for sure. Pretty much anything with Centrifugal brakes around its price
THE REEL TEST Curado 71 XH or HG ?And what about the best magnetic bfs reel in its budget? And there is a popular opinion that magnetic brake systems are better for jig and for light lures - do you agree with it?
Do you prefer this compared to the SLX Dc
stay tuned on that one brother :)
This or the tatula elite for lures from 5gram to 14gram ?
thumb is your best brake , better than DC, or any brakes in the market :)
Im from vietnam. I line tatula i want by tatula 103 .you think about?
it's tough to consider these when you can get a brand new jdm chronarch mgl for just a tad over $200 and by tad I mean $205 on ebay. i'd know because it's exactly what i did. i don't like how these tatulas palm unfortunately. i'm curious if the zillions are that much more refined. @thereeltest...do yo have an absolute favorite reel? also, keep checking this channel for the new metanium mgl, but do realize how very difficult they are to acquire right now.
How is performance compared to Steez 1016 SV TW?
ill be doing a comparison vid between them soon
good job, verry nice
I just bought a 2017 sv and have not used it yet but it makes a popping sound when the reel handle stops moving like something is popping back into place. Any ideas what it might be.
yes I do, and Im going to make a video on it soon
THE REEL TEST thank you. It seems to only be when the reel stops. Hopefully it doesn’t affect the performance for me.
the new one looked like the winner
AMEN brother, the first video ive seen with some good advice about the virus finally, Repent of your sins, Forgive those you are angry at and have faith in God.
Can u try out the 13 fishing inception sport z plz!? And if u can, can u do a comparison between the concept z and inception sz?
i think it would be better if you use colored braid so we viewers can read how far the lure could go. . specially for some people like me that don't have any clue how far is yards/feet/meters and hate gopro when it comes to cast distance review LOL!!!
what line were you using?
Does you or anyone know how to grease/lube a thumb bar on a tatula that has become hard to press down?
I will always use thumb its there to use why not .
Best content ❤️
Also, just an idea, any chance you could do the casting distance test on a lawn etc with a tape to measure each distance u cast. It would take the guess work out of reporting the distance for us AND you wont lose any $15 lures. Its a win win situation.
Casting on grass will wreck your braid in just a few casts, costing far more than a $15 lure.
@@CaptainBax i did not know casting on grass, for example at the park, would damage the braid line. Thx! Im new to baitcasters and braid line. I would never saw that coming! Ive been using cheap mono to learn to cast a baitcaster reel at the park. Is that okay for the mono line and reel?
Thx for the tip.
this must be the first video youve watched on my channel lol.
@@THEREELTEST yup!
Love my Tatula type r
I can't believe my eyes; you testing a daiwa reel😋great review tho👍
you must be new because Ive tested alot of Daiwas. I havent bought a new Shimano in months lol
@@THEREELTEST But you prefer shimano right? 😋I have both, but prefer shimano for its reliability..I follow your channel for the last year, great informative reviews.
@@THEREELTEST true, been watching for few years, fairly new. This review got me thinking I need to at least give this tatula a chance, despite just getting the new slx dc xt
How many pounds do you use pe cables?
How does it compare to the tatula elite long cast?
Thomas Vang I own the elite long cast. I got it for 167$ and it bombs lures and even senkos I’m my opinion . If you are just pond hopping where casting is limited, get the sv. If you fish lakes reservoirs and big ponds get the long cast.
hard to say as Ive never casted them back to back but I know the Elite is smoother on the retrieve
The problem I have with this video is that you don't totally do an un bias attempt with the reel. Put in some 15 lb line and try it again. You may be turning people away from one of the best reels ever made
Is the spool over filled or just look that way 🤷♂️
its filled perfectly of course
Just picked my frist higher end reel is a daiwa tatula 200hs has anyone used one I haven't go it on The water just casting the practice plugs like how it casts for the deep spool .
Can you do a similar video with the abu garcia revo beast 40/41?
