    I truly enjoy watching your videos. Your ability to verbally explain what you are doing, and why is so appreciated. It helps inspiring artists not only see a technique but understand why is is done. Thank you so much!

    Liked how you did negative scraping down for texture. Hadn't thought of that - very clever and useful tip. Thank you. Beautiful scene.

    Thanks Rick for your clear and calm (calming too) demonstration! I ran into your video a few days ago and this is the second time I've watched it. I found myself taking notes of the tips you gave during the demonstration. You're not only a great painter, but also a great teacher.
    I picked up watercolor painting less than 2 months ago, and I find myself really intense during the painting process, not knowing what to do, how to do it, expecting immediate result and not knowing what to expect, etc. Everything I did looks so overworked and forced. After just watching one of your video, I'm "enlightened" (I hope).
    By the way, I've seen artists recommending Arches papers ONLY. Your choice of Langton gives me a thought.
    Thanks!

      Thanks for sharing your story Charles! I'm glad you enjoyed this video. I've used Arches, but not for quite some time. I like Lanaquarelle and I don't jump around experimenting.

    A simple ordinary scene transformed into a beautiful painting that captures the quiet atmosphere of the bog...on the technicalities...scraping down instead of up creates some interesting effects

      I don't understand and I am confused, you state, "on the technicalities .. scraping down instead of up creates ..." I know that I saw him scrape down, as well - even talks about scraping up and scraping down and the effects. Is there another way to scrape down? Did you mean up then back down? I've watched people use dip pens, creating nice effects, as well.

    I love all the Quin colors that I've bought so far, they mix so beautifully but I do not have any of that pretty coral. This is a relatively simple boggy composition. I actually might be able to draw something close to it. Your painting is beautiful, the colors are gorgeous, as always. I really like the gray mix of that sky with the raw sienna. Thanks again! I missed any notice that you were featured in a magazine as another comenter stated. Congratulations!

    Your commentary about not having enough paint on the brush and probably not enough paint mixed on the pallet, is my biggest obstacle to achieving results similar to yours. For me it’s part of the learning process. I started painting in January. I started with student grade paints and cheap paper. I progressed to Arches paper and professional paints, but I cut the paper into small 4x6 sheets and I skimped on the amount of paint I mix. I have moved up to half sheets (from a pad ) and I’m just starting to increase my paint mix to where I don’t have to keep mixing paint in the middle of a wash. The downside of learning how to paint from TH-cam tutorials is there is no objective critique of my work from a professional such as you , so it takes a bit longer. But hey, I am getting better and it’s due to the generosity of people like you.

    Lots of great techniques here and love all the texture created in the marsh grasses. I get so bummed out when I see the original Quin Gold (PO49) being used, which sadly is no longer available. The replacement mix of PO48 + PY150 just doesn't do it for me, sigh. Your tutorials are always so well put together, with very helpful narration throughout, but you've already heard that, ahem, once or twice before. I also find my 1/2" Silver Black Velvet brush very helpful with watercolor paintings and would advise anyone to try that brand as well. Just the right combination of synthetic and natural hair.

    Amazing how you get the paper to just the right state so that you can get the paint to go that way. From another vid you say you should make sure the paper is always saturated, but how is that achieved? Do you just constantly spray, if so, how do you avoid the spraying affecting the paint already on it?

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor
      @RickSurowiczWatercolor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what context I said that in. Depending on the result I'm after, I work on saturated, damp, and dry paper. Most often I work wet on dry paper. I often begin my painting process working on saturated paper with soft edges, but as I progress I develop hard edges, detail, calligraphy on dry paper. When working on saturated paper, I make sure to keep it saturated and not let it get damp, but that's only during that stage. I move quickly to dry paper and frequently dry my paper with a hair dryer.

    • @gradedwash
      @gradedwash 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RickSurowiczWatercolor I wonder if a piece of plastic underneath the paper would keep it saturated for longer as mine drys out really quickly. What do you think? You can only try eh? Who's to know?

      No. I work on 140 lb cold press. I tape dry paper to my board with masking tape which I roll over with little wooden wallpaper seam roller.

      @@RickSurowiczWatercolor thank you that is how I have been doing it but have been watching a lot of videos on stretching and curious if I should add the extra work. i think I need to make richer pigment mixtures. again, thank you for your quick response.
