I was in Free State, South Africa one February taking photos of a caterpillar munching a leaf on a tree (similar to an olive tree) when i noticed the tree had a questing tick on the end of each leaf. The highest was about shoulder height. They were really big around the 5mm mark and really creepy. 😱
I have a cat that we found when she was a kitten in a wooded area, didn't realize that she has stumbled into a mass of seed ticks until the day after and had them shedding into her bed.
Of all the blood sucking animals that carry diseases to humans? Ticks are the low tier carriers of diseases? Because they often take months to feed from host to host. This is often information about hard bodied ticks that often feed slowly, and females only need three meals to survive and reproduce(males mature faster and they can’t feed as adults, and they only latch onto hosts just to mate with females, they do this repeatedly until they starve themselves to death). But their soft bodied counterparts are actually an even bigger concern(they can feed much faster and require more meals to complete their life cycle). And they are also major culprits for spreading diseases very quickly. Many of those rare diseases are believed to become more common, as we bring rodents(mainly rats and mice) and pigs that carry those diseases into human communities and non native ecosystems, and the native ticks that live in those ecosystems will then pick up the nonnative diseases that are transmitted by those nonnative tick species. And this process can repeat over and over again. And the non native tick species will even out compete those native tick species to extinction(good news for us,but bad news for animals that depend on them for food)the nonnative ticks can produce more eggs than the native species.
That's because this one is the original -- I translated it to Hungarian later. But you might find some overlooked English text in the Hungarian version.😉
I disagree about them falling out of trees. I live in the woods if Arkansas and it’s common knowledge. I’d imagine they get up there by either getting knocked off the head if a deer or simply crawling. Weeds connect to low tree limbs and such. C cmon man
