People now days saying all the music is about sex. Smh. This is the 16th century version of "ass and titties" (although with much better music!) Humans don't change :P
For those of you that don't know, here are the lyrics; 'ah me, my lady, if you so delight, to hear 'ah me, ah me' breathed why then so swiftly doom to endless night A wretch that breathes 'ah me' For if I die, brief will your pleasure be To hear one weak and anguished last 'ah me' but if you grant me grace, my lady bright, then shall you hear my ecstasy, ecstasy, ecstasy! Ten thousand times breathe out a soft 'ah me'.' and the words 'ah me', 'ecstasy' and 'ten thousand times' are repeated quite often ;) this is the equivalent of a porno, but for the rich elite back in Monteverdi's time.
@darkshadows15 Well, from the DVD Claudio Monteverdi Banquet of Senses Madrigali Erotici e Spirituali The Consort of Musicke Emma Kirby, soprano, Evelyn Tubb, soprano, Mary Nichols, alto Anthony Rooley director and lute, Andrew King, tenor, Joseph Cornwell, tenor, Simon Grant, bass, Gabriele Micheli, organ Brilliant Classics 99784 Filmed at the Palazzo Te, Mantua, Italy. Total running time : 48,09 min. Best wishes.
This is from IV book of Madrigals of Claudio Monteverdi. Nice to see, but questionable the use of a scenic rapresentation here. Nowadays of music and culture degradation, it could be the only way to get this music near the majority of the audience! Great Emma Kirkby :)
Culture degradation? This is the music from the court of someone a little 'naughty'. If you'd seen the original programme, where Rooley describes the room performed in, it's basically 17th century Playboy painted by the great Italian masters...
Ahime! Spero sia solo un simpatico(?) scherzo....
Im studying this for A levels, its the best piece in there! Also, for those of you who don't know, the song is about sex, lol. ';Ohi Me' means petit death in french, which means orgasm to us... Its still really awsome!
hahaha my teacher was like well everything in music in general comes down to sex.. it starts then builds up and builds up until you come to a climax then it gradually comes back down again hahahaha it was sooo awkward! Especially trying to explain the lyrics to this!
