Rubbertoe Replicas - The Master's Laser Screwdriver - Review

- Reviewing the high end prop replica of The Master's Laser Screwdriver (Lazer Screwdriver) by Rubbertoe Replicas.
This is a detailed prop replica made by Nick Robatto and his team at Rubbertoe Replicas. This is the same team who made the original prop seen in season 3 and season 10 of Doctor Who.
Used by John Simm in his portrayal of The Master this is the deadly counterpart to the 10th Doctor's Sonic screwdriver (and the 12th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver).
We'll take a look at the full design, the electronics, the packaging and we'll also do a comparison against the officially licensed toy made by Character Options to see if you need to add this replica to your Sonic Screwdriver collection.

The toy Verison only ever got two releases anyways which is why its cost so much as there's one with the CE on the nut and bolt part of the lazer by the aging Dail whereas the original release doenst
I was just surprised to see the sealed ones soooo high priced now. I had one a few years ago and it went for about £100 😂 😭
Great review I never knew the prop used in the show was so big. The rubbertoe replica looks awesome but I’m not keen on the switch being of to the side. I would have liked to have seen it done the same as character options did it other than that I think this looks awesome and I would definitely buy one if I wasn’t spending so much acquiring all the toy sonics lol. I did got a laser screwdriver toy after several weeks of hunting them down on eBay. It was listed as for parts not working for £35 for that price and the good cosmetic condition I thought it was worth a try fixing. It arrived today and it turns out all it needs is new batteries, a replacement trigger spring and a tiny bit of glue to hold the thing together so it doesn’t fall apart when it extends. So I have everything except a replacement spring but once I find one it can all go back together and get a tiny bit of glue to keep it together.
I know what you mean but you do get used to the activation switch being on the side and it is quite nice having the separation between the extender and activation once you have it in hand.
I did the same as you - focussed on grabbing the CO collection first and then saved for some of these heavy hitters lol
That's an absolutely brilliant price - nicely done! Doesn't sound like that was too much work to get back to its glory days either. The master's screwdriver is one people seemed to struggle getting the batteries out of because it is a bit fiddly
The switch being on the side is accurate to the prop in the show, to be fair.
I have this one from Rubbertoe, too.
The only criticism I'd give (though may vary depending on individual creations), is that the emitter, on mine, never actually stays up when I spring it open. It did for the first time, but afterwards, it'll just drop back down straight away. I'll have to extend it by holding it at a tilt first.
The second being, the lights are so fragile. Having the emitter up causes it to flicker and sometimes not even work. The sounds are great, albeit not that high quality with it being from Character Options, but enough to enjoy it.
If only the emitter was more stable and would stay up after being extended!
I think I'm addicted to saying "Laser Screwdriver! Who'd have sonic," every time I use it, lol.
I’m sure I heard that the earlier run had that problem and nick was offering repairs. Have you contacted rubbertoe?

@@order66collectibles I haven't contacted him about the emitter issue. However, I have sent him at least two different emails about different things, both of which he never responded back to me. So I've sort of just given up trying to speak with him. It's been almost a year without him responding.
The emitter falling is slightly annoying for me but I'm sure I can manage with it.
@@Lucien0012 Ah man I'm so sorry to hear that :( I've also emailed recently asking about vortex manipulators but no reply. Guess he's probably super busy with prop making for the current filming series

As irritating as it may be for you, I'm also kind of glad it's not just me in a way. At least I know I'm not being targeted by him, haha.
As for Vortex Manipulators, I know Little Shop Props are doing them at the moment. I got myself one of their Miracle Day variations a bit back, which I still have on display. And I have to say, I recommend. Annoyingly, it's a little too big for me since my wrists are pretty small/thin. But the detail of the prop itself is very impressive!

One of my biggest regrets is not getting the character options release.
There are loose ones on eBay for ok-ish prices at the minute (and a sealed one with a battered box for about £65)
If only this had legit laser lights in it, then it would make it like a real laser screwdriver!

Great video mate, I know it's not in this vid - but I hope surreal entertainment re-release River's sonic, impossible to get hold of a reasonably priced one.
Thanks so much I really appreciate that :) You know what I was thinking the exact same thing the other day - I was going to put a poll on here (think I definitely will) to see what sonic people would like to see Surreal re-release - River, The Master, 13, The War Doctor (but maybe with a button instead of spring activated). All bar 13 are hard to get at a reasonable price these days

Yeah I used to have one of those but stupidly sold it to fund other collections 🤦♂️
It may just be a glitch with my character options toy, however I can activate the lights and sounds while it's closed by pressing the bottom of the activation button. If I had the money I'd be buying this one too
That’s no glitch - you’ve got the 2nd release of the character options you you lucky devil! The original (in the video) could only function when extended but they did a re-release in blue packaging and that had a second button built into the bottom. This is worth it - took a while to save for it but no regrets
Whilst the sound effects are a nice touch, I kinda wish there was a way to make it completely silent when activated, only to match to prop more.
Absolutele masterpiece otherwise.
Yeah something like that to switch sound off but keep the LEDs would be a nice touch!

A) what were you doing with the master’s screwdriver when you were drunk?!
B) yeah the price on this is a bit steep but there’s a few of the OG character options toys on eBay at the minute if you’re looking and they’re not overly pricey - saw a sealed one (tatty box) for £65

I think they will but they’ve got a few other projects in go at the minute - the 14th doctor screwdriver and also they’re looking at making river song’s sonic too

Rather that for a full metal replica than £600 for the toy though
