    I started a no-buy month in March 2020 and then on March 16th our state went into shelter in place orders, so my no buy month turned into about a no buy 5 months because I don't like shopping online for clothes. I learned very much from that process, particularly because I had extremely decluttered my wardrobe in preparation to start it so I could learn what I really wanted and didn't want and why I did or didn't like certain things. And I definitely learned all that! I will probably do another no buy month at the beginning of this year! And LOL hopefully it will only be a month!

    I have been decluttering for almost two years now and have been calling myself a minimalist openly for a year. I have tried the mins game twice. It really help me with the hard stuff, like the boxes in the attic from five years ago and a lot of just in case items. I have kept a decluttering journal on my phone and it has really helped me. I have also done a five things a day for a month, and tree things a day for a month. After that I have done one thing a day, I did that for nine months. These days I’m down to five things a month. Just to help me keep reviewing my things. I guess I really had a lot of stuff, because I really haven’t bought anything if it’s not replacing anything broken or worn out.
    As for meal planning, I just love it! I plan for every weekday for the month and then I shop for it all in the beginning of the month. Except some vegetables that I have to purchase again in the middle of the month. We do a little weekend shop every week, because my husband like to cook those days and he don’t like to plan ahead. For us this works great.
    Sorry, this got very long.

    personally, i've always found these kind of challenges super stressful. i prefer to set time aside every few weeks (or whenever i want/need to declutter) and go through all of my belongings, making sure i dont own things i dont need anymore. i then try passing them to friends or exchanging those items, upcycling them or repurposing them if possible.

      @ecofriendlia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That is definitely a very responsible way to go about decluttering! I can totally understand why these challenges can be too stressful! I think sometimes I like it but I also like to just give myself time and see how I feel and what I want to declutter and not be driven by a certain goal☺

    • @status101-danielho6
      @status101-danielho6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I never did any of these challenges because they were easy to game. You can fool yourself into thinking that you decluttered 10 socks when what you really did is declutter 5 pairs. You can also fool yourself into thinking you own 50 garments when you don’t count underwear, socks, sportswear etc. Pursuing a number is unreasonable; identifying what you don’t use is eye opening.

  • @59Laughs

    I agree with you about the meal plan. If I plan meals I usually end up wanting something different. What I do instead is a pantry challenge of sorts. I look for a couple items in my pantry, fridge, or freezer and work them into our meals. It’s not a whole week or month of meals just a couple meals or dishes and that way I don’t have food waste, things get used up.

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That sounds like a good solution! I sometimes plan for some meals but also always have some staples. So if I am bored and don't feel like cooking what I planned I can always do different other things as well. I also really try to avoid fold waste and mostly succeed ☺

I have been on this journey for five years but haven't been overwhelmed for a long time. I did a 2018 things in 2018 decluttering challenge. I can't remember what blog it was through though. I got on a roll and stopped tracking things just a few months in because it was obvious I was going to go past 2018 things. As some other commenters have said, I think I might try a packing party if I lived alone. It sounds neat. My husband would not go for it though. Lol. I could stand to get a little more minimal in some areas of my personal things, though I'm not sure he and the kids would be alright with much more going of the family items.

    Like you, I would have liked to do the Mins Game, but the idea came about after I had done my main decluttering. However, what I do do from time to time, is note the items I am getting rid of, and the items I have bought that month and see what the net number is. It can be quite good to get rid of 20 items, for example, but only buy six. Net decrease of 14! I feel as though that is a win, and I find it encouraging. And I note when something is a direct replacement for something else. My own personal Mins Game! (And I don't get obsessive about it either....)

    • @ecofriendlia

    I do find the “backward hanger” trick very useful for identifying what I don’t wear. “Quarantining” has been very helpful for decluttering, but raises another issue. Last week I took a small car full of decluttering items to Goodwill (thrift store) and found that the drop off area was already filled to the ceiling with other people’s decluttering. I felt so guilty knowing that much of that and much of what I was dropping off would probably go to the trash. Most of what I donate is good quality and useful for someone, just not for me at this point in my life, but it makes me sad that no one wants it.

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I totally feel that! I have also heard that a lot of thrift stores don't take things anymore because they are overwhelmed... I try to give things away through online marketplaces where people can come and pick them up ( I put them in front of my door is we don't have a close interaction ) and like that I know that the things will not immediately be thrown away... But it is more work and I still have a huge pile of stuff...

    • @SchneewittchencheN
      @SchneewittchencheN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used to donate a lot too until i found out that a lot of it never gets sold. Here are the 3 thigns I do now instead. First I made a clothing swap group with some girls at my university. we just post pictures in the group chat and leave things at a decided spot if someone wants it. Then I put things at my front door in a "for free" box and it the weather is nice they go quickly. And last, i just started selling on ebay and its much easier than I though. Many people also offer big packages of clothing for a cheap price to sell them quicker. either way, your things are less likely to get thrown away. For things in bad condition you can make rags out of it or donate thigns like towels/blankets/sheets to pet shelters. From cotton clothes with nice patters you could sew face masks or reusable pads.

    Useful tips Lia. I did the 30 day
    challenge when first starting out
    on my minimal journey. Now I
    purchase say a new pair of boots
    or when the others look like they
    are worn out or have seen better
    days. Clutter nowadays really
    annoys me. To the degree that
    when I walk into a cluttered type
    of shop I feel uneasy like why am
    I here or just do not go into it.
    Regarding shoes for your dear son.
    I feel buy one pair of shoes at a time
    (depending on the European season). But not counting indoor
    slippers (finken) for school and home. Especially as their little feet
    grow so quickly. I would not buy
    second shoes for a kid. All the best
    and give your darling son lots of
    hugs from me.

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, I can totally understand that feeling of a cluttered store... I actually get that more and more. It is not a problem or makes me unable to go there but I definitely feel better in a calm and decluttered environment! Yes, I think that is a good way to go. I mostly just buy shoes for him when he needs a pair for the current or coming season. But sometimes other people buy him shoes and then it gets more difficult... ☺😕

    • @111-w9d7y
      @111-w9d7y 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ecofriendlia I actually think
      it is a good idea to let a kid choose
      their clothes and shoes. So if they
      need trainers and they want Blue
      Purple with yellow stripes - just
      let it be. As for others buying him
      shoes - tell them just to give him
      a gift voucher for shoes or put the
      money into his bank account.
      Just be firm and say do this or that.
      Never take second shoes from
      somebody else Kids have
      different foot widths. People's
      feet stretch. Think you have
      Dosenbach for shoes in Germany.
      I am not a lover of shoes for
      myself from there but check
      out their kids shoes. Sometimes
      they have nice strong shoes and
      prices are good. I also think a
      kid never needs say more than
      5 mix and match outfits in a
      season. The little angel's/
      monsters are always growing.
      Bless your darling son.

      I have some tipps for a sustainable/minimal christmas! I keep a running list of things to wish for or buy eventually, it includes things like household items but also upgrades for daily use items like shoes, bags...for christmas this year I chose some things that I can use daily but would buy for cheaper since i don´t have a lot of money. i´m wishing for a nice backpack, some good quality sneakers and birkenstocks. also some useful things like linen pillow cases, wool socks, a stainles steal garlic press and a soap dish. these are all things i will use daily/weekly and that i want to invest in good quality. and for some i will replace an old item. oh and also a gift card for dance classes. you could also wish for a gift card for a concert (post covid sometime), your favorite restaurant, spa, a massage. Or for someone to donate money to charity for you. A plant or something you use up like a nice skin care or bath salt if you actually take baths. Or even a professional softeware like final cut or photoshop if thats something you´d use if you had the spare money for it but can´t affort just like that. hope these ideas help you :)

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As long as it was fun and helped I think you can totally cheat. Especially because with counting things it is never completely clear. For example, if you declutter an electronic device and the charger it uses, are these two things? Definitely yes, but also the charger is nothing without the device and so maybe it is only one thing? That is why I think counting is fun but never really useful for comparing when it comes to minimalism ☺

    Really like this video, its so odd that Black Friday sales have come to Australia, but it makes sense from a retail perspective, I am using the black friday sales to get a new pair of jeans I have been eyeing the past 3 months as none of my current jeans fit and I want to switch from skinny fit to slim fit. I don't like owning multiple pairs of jeans as I find i wear a pair of jeans for a week straight without washing and I like a certain shade of jeans as well and I feel odd owning to many of the same colour of jeans. But I don't know yet if I want to declutter my current jeans because of size fluctuation and they still fit they are just very tight, any tips? I don't think I could do the 30 day minimalism challenge either as I don't have 500 items to declutter, well I would if I included books and dvds but those bring me joy so I have trouble parting with those unless I haven't read or watched it for many years then I pass it on to a friend or neighbour.
