The above links to an article from the Australian Women's Weekly dated Oct 16 1974, about the then new Torque program and Peter Wherrett.
"Torque began in 1974 and continued to rate highly in its evening timeslot for the ABC until it came to an end in 1980. Peter Wherrett always said he made the series with the public broadcaster because he wanted to be able to pull no punches about those vehicles that had safety or engineering problems. It was this forthright honesty that attracted the audience to Torque over the years." (Janet Bell - 'Australian Screen' NFSA)

Peter wherrett was by far the best of all motor enthusiast at the time and maybe for all time, very detailedand in depth reviews of everything he reviewed..
He probably has saved many lives over the years and helped many people make the right choice when it came to buying a car.

There was nothing wrong with a 3.3 litre. Dad had a 3.3 litre 5 speed manual fitted to his 1984 XE when new. He always managed to get good performance from it and he was doing a lot of long distance driving in his work as a stock and station agent

I had one stock 3.3 crossflow iron head, it felt more lively than a 4.1.
Less torque, similar HP. Where the 4.1 is strong down low then gets breathless, the 3.3 increased power more progressively as revs increased.

The 3.3 litre in the XD and XE falcons was an underperforming piece of crap. Especially when you had a full car and luggage in the boot. My old XE had a 3.3 litre connected to a 3 speed Auto and it was dreadful. I waste no time replacing it with the bigger 250 X flow engine and a 4 on the floor and it was so much better it wasn't funny.
