  • After breaking brand new sickle bars every year on her John Deere 1219 Hay Cutter (mower conditioner), you all suggested some great ideas on what may have played a factor.
    Farm Girl disassembles the cutter bar guards and shows how to reassemble the cutterbar guards correctly and a few easy to miss solutions that may have caused the cutter bar to break in the first place..
    Why does my haybine keep breaking sickle bars?
    How to replace a haybine sicklebar
    How to install guards on a haybine

    I go over a few more details on why I thought the cutter bar was breaking previously, in the next video, so I'll add them here:
    I had been tightening the cutter bar pin bolt to "gouldintight" (as tight as you can get it). I noticed when I did that on the new cutterbar PRIOR to installing the guards and hold downs, THEN CORRECTLY torqued the bolt down at the very end, the pin shifted in the hole. For me, "TIGHT" was about 75lbs of torque. The pin required 160 lbs. I had to switch to Erik's torque wrench to achieve it because it had a longer handle to achieve the full 160lbs.
    If the pin isn't correctly torqued, it WILL shift slightly in the hole and cause the bar to twist slightly as it moves.
    Secondly, the last guard and hold down had been drilled out to make room for the cutterbar, but likely was still making slight contact with it. By switching to the regular guard/holddown I was hoping to eliminate that final problem.
    Then of course making sure the cutterbar didn't have too much downward pressure on the knives from the guards and hold downs. By installing them AFTER installing the cutterbar, they better align and naturally achieve the correct gap.

      I have a JD 820 sickle bine similar to yours. For the front combing head, one of those bars has a pin on the right side that can be pulled to rotate the tines away from the work area to give you more space.
      It makes it a lot easier to work under there.

  • @kierancl
    @kierancl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I would not install that new cutter bar as it will break like the rest as you have not sorted out the issue causing the fluctuating stress on the bar. It is either the pitman arm or the wobble box..No weld no matter how good it is will prevent breaking again. Pity to see a new cutter bar breaking when it can be avoided

    • @garynelson4749
      @garynelson4749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      your spot on......new bar/guards/hold downs are about cut quality not the breaking issue ....fixing a haybine shouldnt be this difficult

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As stated in my pinned comment, my video clip explaining what had happened seemed to be missing. The first 2 guards on the bar were not in the correct position, which was causing the cutter bar to kick out everytime it hit. Second issue was the pitman arm bolt holding in the pin was only tight, about 70 lbs torque when it needed to be 160. This allowed a slight shift of the cutterbar as well which I noticed while installing it.
      Were I to rip apart the wobble box on a hunch I would no longer have time to cut the hay. And while I MIGHT save $400 on a possible broken new bar, I'd lose several hundred more by not cutting.
      The arc swing on the pitman arm was perfect. It seemed to me that if it were "off" it would swing slightly differently one side to the other. Both sides when swung right to left measured exactly the same.

    Just picked you up from Coles channel. This will be fun watching a "city girl" become educated in farming/country life. One glaring thing tho, Why don't you have a battery impact wrench yet? Yes, its good to learn/use hand tools before power but watching you seemingly always struggling with the ratchet sends my ocd brain into a "that should take 20 seconds instead of 5 minutes" thought. Just from what I've seen today, I know you have what it takes to be completely successful in all your endeavours. I've trained plenty of women over the years and you generally retain more in less time and have more finesse mechanically than a lot of guys do. Don't ever doubt yourself, you can do anything you want to. ;)

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm.. good point! And the first to mention it! We have 2 impacts, a large one (used in a few videos earlier for stubborn nuts) and a smaller one. We bought the large one after having a few tire issues 2 years ago. Prior to that, I used the small impact often . . . After getting the large one I forgot about the small one! You are certainly right though!

  • @acdii
    @acdii 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking through the parts manual, if you don't have one, get one! For the non clog setup like you have, the end guards are the closed type. That NH one you put on will work, but JD has a single closed guard for left and right. Hate to say it, but you will need to get one of each and reposition all the guards so it is set up correctly. It is actually the regular knife guard cut in the middle to make a left and right, so you could actually use that red one and cut it in two.

    The sickle bar hold down guards can be hit with a hammer to close up the gap between the cutter bar and guards. The guards are designed to be adjusted that way.

    Poor Baby. I sure hope you have the solution. Happy Autumn. Those welds were likely done with a robot and look very good to me (Inspector for Decades). Continuous and likely lots of penetration. Not sure why you went with Stainless Steel bolts as they do not have the Tensile Strength of Carbon Steel ones. It would appear that the back side of those clamps need to be higher so force can be applied at the front to press the bar tighter to the ledger plate / bottom stationary cutting edge. Pack some additional grease in those needle bearings. You might consider removing both wheels and have a garage flip the tires that are wearing prematurely on the inside to the other side of the wheel.
    Out of alignment somewhere.

      It will slide in, but when inserting a new knife it has slightly different picthes than the old one and the guards should be re-aligned to fit. I'm just going off what the manual stated. I will say it fit 100% better installing the guards after the bar was in place.

Hey I am a logger guy so words just don't always come out right... sounded prissy to me the way I read it. I see something that looks simple yet has caused so much grief to install. Must be a easier way wouldn't you think?? Oh well, Don't see many out in the wild parts of alaska... they have farms oh about seven hundred miles north east of me and that don't make sense either but it gets way hot the further north that you get and then like magic, Ice cold! Like the warmest day of the year and only what you can count on one hand, days of the whole year. Our hottest days are like in the high eighties in one month of the summer and the rest go down hill fast here but further north can get over a hundred and stay for a month.. no matter as this ain't about me... so stay safe an you an Eric live to be a hundred on that little ranch... I wish I could be around to see the third generation of you'ns

    If you relie on GOD for a good mechanical repair you are testing your faith beyond it's limits. Knowledge and experience is what you need, for instance you would never pull 60 ft lb with that little short ratchet and only a fool believes you can acuretly tension a bolt without a tension wrench. But that's OK you like fixing and spending money, it makes good videos right. You still have not fixed the real issue, you have just repeated the work you did 12 months ago, nothing has changed. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over hoping for a different outcome. Cheers mate 🍻

      Actually I did pull 60lbs of torque with that little torque wrench, but not the 160 for the pitman arm pin. That one I needed erik's longer torque wrench, and yes I did pull it.
      You didn't REALLY look at the work I did last year, or you'd remember a key issue with one of the guards . . . the same issue I did repair this time around. Sadly my cameras haven't been recording like they should and several key items of damage showed a better picture of what's happening.

      You don't get knowledge and experience without trial and error repairs when you don't know exactly whats causing things to break, you also don't go fixing everything at once because then you don't know what caused the problem in the first place plus also spent more money and time than needed when you could be out cutting and making money.

    Blimey! underserrated sections are so prone to clogging. I was using top serrated 40 yrs ago and soon changed my CLAAS combine bed to the Schumaker system that cuts alternately up and down on the fingers so needs no separate top "clamp" plates as the double fingers are shear plates both above and below the knife and the sections are correspondingly mounted up and down so the knife runs without being "lifted" by the crop underneath, which underserrated sections exaggerate and increase friction and drag not to mention having to sharpen them which is not needed with top serrated. JD & DEUTZ combines have been fitting Schumaker knives since the early 80's.

    Should have just dumped it and bought a new holland they are much more reliable. Stainless steel bolts are not as strong and they gall the threads if you don't use anti-seize
