    2:59 You're telling me safety isn't more important that appearance? I've seen some ugly bridges yet none of them have collapsed.

    It is very simple to me, as an architect interested in bridge design for 60 years, that FIU bridge failed as a trussed bridge, but however, FIU bridge was not designed as a trussed bridge, you could see the model of the design which has clearly the suspension cables overhead which were not there in the video of the collapsing bridge with slow motion ! Mr.Contractors, ( Possibly represented by Tommy Jacobi of This post and Mr. Brown of another video in TH-cam. ) please do not assume the suspension cables are for looks and omitted them when erecting the bridge. So when the bridge failed, started to blame the engineers making mistakes and shifted the blame to the engineers instead ! George Wu, ARCHITECT, A.I.A., NCARB 2018-3-30

    From F=ma, if a=0, what is the bridge for?

      Hermit Oldguy hehe it means the bridge is going strong meaning it ain’t breaking which it would then have an acceleration.

    its clear a bridge cant have bottom supports. all the support should bi in one form not 4 or 6 or 8. we make it strong, to last forever.

    Hi, why don't engineering drawings show the curvature of the earth, and instead use a t and set square. Please answer (anyone).

    • @andrewmasullo2978
      @andrewmasullo2978 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Cameron of the Clan Mitchell , The distance that a bridge would cover is negligible compared to the distance needed to take account the curvature of the earth. They do correct for curvature of the earth when designing highways and railways

    • @drabberfrog
      @drabberfrog 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You only need to account for the Earth's curvature on very long bridges.

    • @vo1t_147
      @vo1t_147 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the distance from you to the horizon makes up something like a hundredth of a degree (maybe a thousandth?) so when making bridges the curvature of the earth is hardly a problem

    • @fishhuntadventure
      @fishhuntadventure ปีที่แล้ว

      The curvature of the earth angularly is what? An elevation 30, 40 times the ‘margin of error’ for expansion of the steel in the span at a minimum. Terrain variation is huge in comparison to the static curvature of the earth’s surface.
      Or you could more simply just decide that the earth is flat…

    • @Soroczynski
      @Soroczynski ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fishhuntadventure the question was why doesn't orthographic view show curve. And why is a t and set square the shape they are. Do boats not go over the earth "curve" in 5 miles. That's a lot of curve over water

    Hello, I am a girl at the university. I am required to make a model or project a cardboard bridge that is a meter long and bears a weight of 160 kilos, and it is very important. It is my graduation project. Can you help me and I hope for a serious response. I need your help in this project, how do I start and what are the laws

    • @shahmi98
      @shahmi98 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try to construct it by making the cardboard to be triangle. Then stack it up. Continue to fix it based on the failure.

    At 10;17, where are the suspension cables shown in the FIU design ? The FIU bridge had the suspension cables to pull up the horizontal bridge, but it was not there when the bridge failed ( see the video in slow motion ). Look into the sequence of construction by the inexperienced contractors who displayed a slide rule to impressed the reader in his video, did not know a thing about the tension and compression at work and took the job by picking up the bridge without the suspension cables. If the Golden Gate bridge was built by the FIU contractor way, it could never be here for so many years ! George Wu, ARCHITECT, AIA, NCARB 2018-3-24

    • @tommyjacobi2054
      @tommyjacobi2054 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a truss bridge. There are no suspension "cables".
      These are 16' pipes and there only task was: look nice
      architects..... -.-

    • @georgewu5
      @georgewu5 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bridge collapsed without the suspension cables in place yet, according to the slow motion videos. Am I correct ? And yet the design showed there were overhead cables. Mr. Brown of another video here decided that the suspension cables were cosmetic, just for decoration ! Well, this is the first time I ever heard of the suspension cables are for the looks, not structural. You better check with the filed engineer drawings and use the computers, not the out dated slide rule which I used when I went to college 60 years ago ! George Wu, ARCHITECT, AIA, NCARB 2018-3-29

    • @georgewu5
      @georgewu5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the suspension cables were there first, the 170'-0" bridge would never have collapsed. It is common sense. You need an engineer to tell you how to build a great bridge, a great bridge like Golden Gate bridge ! Like George Washington bridge ! Suspension cables always went in first ! Not went in afterward as a decoration ! George Wu, ARCHITECT, AIA, NCARB 2018-3-29

    • @georgewu5
      @georgewu5 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never seen a single layer trussed bridge can span 170'-0" without any overhead suspension cables in tension ! The contractor decided that they could erect a single layer trussed bridge 170'-0" long with the suspension cables as " cosmetic " ( meaning added-on decoration ! Not structural ! ) No wonder FIU bridge failed ! The cart was before the horse ! George Wu, ARCHITECT, AIA, NCARB 2018-3-29

    • @tommyjacobi2054
      @tommyjacobi2054 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right, suspension cables are never just for fun. But here we have NO suspension cables.
      Those TUBE ARE cosmetic. Furthermore in this case it is impossible to put these cables only on one side.
      It is a truss bridge length 175' with hight 18' absolutly common ratio. Take a closer look @ suspension bridges, those are much slender.
      If those TUBE were there first, the pylon will fail too an kill more people.
      Even if someone what too build a bridge were those pipes are part of the structural system, you get a extradosed bridge and not a suspension bridge.
      For this to know i don't need a structural engineer, i am one since 15 years.
      60 years after college, working as a architect and don't know what a truss is.
      You suffer from Dunning-Kruger effect!
