I think the "fall" part of "do not fall or drop" means don't even let it tip over (e.g. on the desk), even with the centre of gravity low. I falled a 20x into the holder once, only an inch or so drop which caused no damage - to the lens. I used up a years-worth of hearbeats in the few seconds after that happened though :-)
I can't believe this...I just bought this a few weeks ago based on your recommendation and it has been sitting here in the box. I was just coming back to figure out all the parts I need to fit it to my Canon r5/5DSr/90D cameras via either a set of extension tubes or those M42 jobs that I have ordered and am still waiting on (I want to be able to use all three cameras since I do other types of photography too). Not sure I have all the right pieces yet and was getting ready to search through your videos...and boom, this video from yesterday. Great! Hey Anthony, I have a feeling a lot of people are going to have some questions about setting up and using this objective, so I am going to do a supplemental video this afternoon and get it out as soon as possible. All the info is elsewhere in my back catalog but this video will just make it a lot easier. Should be able to get it out tomorrow.
I've been doing close up stuff for a while since I got my fist DSLR over a decade ago. Started with a 50mm lens on extension tubes or reversed, upgraded to a dedicated macro 105mm, recently got a AmScope 4X objective... and have been drooling over getting my hands on this Mitutoyo 5X objective. Hopefully I can get something together soon. Thank you for all the inspirational videos you continue to put out.

Hi Radha, I have just reviewed the data sheet for the M-Plan Apo 10X and cannot find that recommendation anywhere. Without seeing it I cannot be sure what they are referring to. Mitutoyo quotes a sensor coverage of 30mm for the 10X, which gives almost complete FF coverage. I use an APS-C with the M-Plans as the overall sharpness is unbeatable. Please send me the citation and I will give you a better answer.

You need either a 77mm/ 0.75mm thread pitch to 26mm/ 0.70mm thread pitch adapter (RAF Camera sells these) or you can use a series of regular 0.75mm pitch step down rings going from 77 down to 26. Regular sets include 77-72, 72-67, 67-62, 62-58, 58-55, 55-52, 52-47, 47-43, 43-37, 37-30, and 30-26. The pitch of the last ring is off by 50um but it fits pretty well. That will give you an infinity space of about 30mm which I prefer. I went with the option of going from 77mm to 52mm in one step down ring, as I had one handy.
Thanks Allan, while calculating the tube length , I am measuring it from from the sensor plane to the base of the raynox 150. This includes the flange distance 46.5 mm of the nikon camera to the base thread of the raynox 150.Am I right? Your analysis of the NISI macro rail which was inspiring. I have just got one, and i am in the process of integrating a small dc motor to drive the rail with a coupling shaft. The cognysis stack shots cost a bomb and we get taxed 50% more while importing it .

Hi Radha, your comment about the 10X Mitutoyo disappeared, but I got your link - the 2/3" is the field of view when the objective is used with a fixed standard infinity spacing - we use a shorter infinity space, allowing much greater coverage of a DSLR sensor. The D500 has an ideal pixel pitch for the resolution of the 10X objective, however if you use a 135mm lens as a relay you will only get about 5X magnification and some of the Apo correction may be compromised. This lens requires a 200mm lens for optimal performance (I use either the ITL-200 or Raynox DCR-150).

The pixel pitch for the three digital cameras I own is as follows: Canon EOS 5D Mark II (6.4 microns); Fujifilm X-T1 (4.8 microns); and Fujifilm X-T3 (3.8 microns). If I understand what you're saying about pixel pitch then the 5DM2 would work best with the Mitutoyo 5x objective, followed by the X-T1 and X-T3, in order of suitability. Right? Thanks, Alan!
HI Allan . I am not able to get a Nikon D7500. Will A D5600 and D3500 be ok as they both have 3.89 pixel pitch. Where does the D850 come in with a slightly larger pixel pitch of 4.34? will it be better with larger mag of 10x ++?
The D3500 does not have a connection for use with an automated rail (or at least the D3400 did not), but I believe the D5600 would be a reasonable choice . I seldom use my D850, even though the larger pixel pitch does provide greater dynamic range, because the files are so much larger and I have limited space. The image quality of the D850 is hard to beat and the D5600 is not in the same league. But it also doesn't cost $3K! I think the midrange APSC DSLR will give very good results.
Allan, I would like to graduate from my Laowa 2.5-5X and get a nice Mitutoyo objective but after watching this video I'm not sure I can make the leap due to my current equipment. I have a Nikon Z6ii and a D500 as my 2 bodies. The only 200mm lens I have is the Nikon ED AF Micro Nikkor 200mm 1:4 D and I remember you saying in one of your videos NOT to use a macro lens with a microscope objective, correct? So I think I would have to invest in another lens to mount the objective on. Then there are the adapters that I'll have to figure out from re-watching some of your videos again and then purchase. Anyway, as you can probably tell, still a bit confused so any soothing words would be appreciated. O yeah, haven't purchased my StackShot rail yet either and noticed there is a "3X" rail and I assume this is more of a touchscreen version of the button type?
Hi there. Good questions! I would not use a macro lens as a relay, there are better options. But I would also not miss the opportunity to get a mitutoyo - it is the single best equipment purchase I have ever made, hands down, and the cost of the other gear you need is pretty minimal. Unless you count the rail. You would need a Raynox DCR150 (200mm lens), some extension tubes (or much better- a PB6 bellows) an adapter for the raynox to F/Z-mount and an adapter for the Raynox, to M26 objective mount, and some extension tubes, And a stackshot. OK, so I was wrong. You need a lot of expensive gear. But you should still get it - there is nothing else that comes close - save yourself some cash and buy a used Stackshot (see $10 saved right there!), and you don't need the 3X (another $100) - how can you not get it with those savings! Seriously though, if you are serious about image quality, you will never regret going out on a limb to get this gear. It will last you forever and if you change your mind, every single bit of your investment will be recouped when you sell it. Cared for, this gear does not lose value. Tough decision. Good luck!
HI Allan i am settling for a D500 which seems to have the same sensor of the d7500 4.2um i think . I hope that is good enpough. what nikon camera would you suggest that has the pixel pitch that justifies the high quality of a mityutoyo objectives especialy when going to 20x mag.
HI Allan , What is the recomended step size in amacro rail for a 10x objective . I believe the DOF of a 10x is 4.5 micron. So i guess 10 micron will be good enough. Is this enough to take care of the little variation in step size as i am making my own motorised rail with a NISI m-180. Which is the better objective, the amscope one or the generic stuff
It depends on the subject, but 10um is a good starting point. I would recommend shooting a short test run and looking for evidence of banding. The NiSi should be able to handle 10, mechanically, as long as your stepper is able to deliver the increments accurately. You will need to pay close attention to backlash when setting up the motor and rail. There will be quite a bit, but as long as you program a first step long enough to take up the slack, but not long enough to move the carriage, you should be fine. Unfortunately, I have never found a generic or Amscope 10X objective that was any good for photography. The best entry level objective in the Nikon CFI Plan 10x - great lens, good value.

Hi Allan - Very informative video as always. I will have to get my crop sensor Canon 7D serviced to use with the Mitutoyo but will manage on full frame for now. I now have a modern 200mm Canon prime lens and almost all the adapters I need to mount it wth the Mitutoyo. I have gone with the Wemacro adapter they now have for the Mitutoyo. The other one was a bit too heavy on my wallet what with duty and postage. Thanks again for the tip off about Lightglass Optics. Regards, Barry

Did anyone else notice? So I'm wondering which one is right or maybe Mity just changed their labeling scheme... Hi Alex, this has always confused me. I was under the impression that there was just one authentic lens, but when you think about it, why would that be the case. Mitutoyo is gigantic and they make huge numbers of these objectives for many different markets. It should not surprise me that their markings have changed over time (but it still does surprise me). But I have both these styles and others beside that, and every one has a certificate of authenticity. More important they are all optically superb. I guess that is as close to certain as I am going to get!
Thanks Allan, great information, as always. I did a lot of metrology in a past life and know Mitutoyo's quality tools quite well. I placed order for 5X with LightGlass Optics today.
Well it depends on a number of factors, but you should be safe at 20um. I recommend you start about there and see if you can stretch it out a bit - you often can. But even good rails may become less precise over time, so keeping a close eye out for banding. Remember - too short and you have a few extra images, too long and you have no image.
I do some work in metrology and at some level you are correct, for your average job shop type machine shop could be covered in 1-2 courses at a community college. If you have the need to measure and align things to sub micron levels, that takes multiple degrees in physics and engineering.
I was thinking of you when that gag occurred to me! Trust me, I know how intense that field is. I just read a book on precision last month and it was a real eye opener. I was hoping that all the engineers out there would know my tongue was firmly in my cheek. Which is an interesting saying - where else would it be?
Today I was working on cobbling together a custom laser interferometer to measure displacement because our ultra precision indicator probes spring force (0.0056 lbs) was deforming the parts and ruining the measurement.
@@AllanWallsPhotography hahaha I thought you only had venereal calipers 🤣 Side note: have you tried adding extension to your tube lens to increase the image circle size when using a mitutoyo objective? Adding about 32mm of extension tubes to my 135mm lens (Sony 135mm F1.8 GM) completely eliminated any hint of vignette. Adding 52mm of extension to my 100-400mm lens (Sony 100-400mm F5.6 GM) got rid of most of the vignette. So far I only tested the removal of vignette, I have not done a full stack and image quality comparison but at least on the camera screen I don’t see a loss of iq.
@@andrewh2341 I have tried it with other objectives with varying results in terms of IQ. I do not like cutting the infinity space to short so I am willing to try anything. It is why I use an APSC with Mits - so that I can stay 30mm out in from of the relay lens. I never even thought about adding extension to a 200mm lens. I have a go at it tonight. Thanks Andrew!

Hi - I think your plan has theoretical merit, but you may be less excited with the results. It is true that there are some 10x objectives that perform well at lower magnifications, the Nikon CFI Plan 10x comes to mind, but I have been less impressed with the Mitutoyo M-Plan used in the same way. I think it has something to do with the aberration correction and how it optimized for use with a 200mm relay lens. If you are not in a hurry, I am actually planning to test a few 10X objectives as 5X lenses later this autumn and I will release a video of the results.
HI Allan , i just chatted with an edmond optics engineer and was advised to use a 5x objective for 5x rather than 10x with a shortened tube as image will be degraded. Waiting to see your practical results.
@@radharamanan5003 That is hardly surprising, I would not expect an objective vendor to agree with a method that reduces your need for a new objective, however, I agree completely. As I said earlier, you will not find the 10X M-Plan to be a very good 5X objective. But it is a superlative 10X optic, just as the 5X is probably the best lens of its type, in the world, especially at the price (if you do decide to get a 5X, get it from LightGlass Optics - The owner has agreed to make this objective available, new and factory boxed, to my viewers for roughly half the price that EO offers. Jeff will help - 505-235-9468 - tell him I sent you). You should look into the $200 Nikon CFI plan achromat if you want a 10X that is just as sharp at 5X - that is what I use. But once you take a single picture with the Mitutoyo M-Plan 5X, you will be spoiled for life. It is unbelievably accurate and sharp. By the way, the video for this comparison is still a couple of months away, but the images have all been collected - based on my initial review, I would not recommend using the 10X at any magnification other than its rated 10X with a high quality 200mm relay lens.

Ie having the tube length plus or minus 5 mm ? how does one calculate the exact distance from the focal plane of the camera? ie from the focal plane on the body of the camera to the microscope objective front.. middle or base?

The HR is a the high resolution version of the M-Plan objectives and is available in the 5X, 10X, 50X, and 100X. They will exceed the ability of most consumer camera sensors to resolve detail, with 5X resolving line pairs of 1.3um as opposed to 2um with the non-HR. It would therefore seem like the huge premium you would pay for the HR could be better spent to two additional non-HR M-plans! As Psyaiko Aiko has already mentioned below, the SL lenses have a slightly longer WD, but are only made in the 20X, 50X, ad 100X lenses. I am not sure that the added WD adds anything - it is already far longer than anything else affordable, but it could be well worth the investment in some industrial applications.
Alan please I need a bit of help advise I use canon 80D I want to purchase the old lenses manual lenses and the adapter so I get a micro lense please if you could find for me 1 or 2 lenses at 50mm and 35mm or better with the right ring adapter to fit my eos 80D the reason I'm asking I'm disabled man and I don't like to make a mistake kindly if you can help me Regards
Thanks for all of these videos to catch up with. Regards the D850 vs D500 for these objectives, I am using 1.2 image area with my D850. You end up with images 6K pixels across vs. 5500 or so for the D500. I plan on trying both though and going with the best image quality.
I've just ordered one from Lightglass Optics. I had been tempted by a Nikon CFI Super Fluor 4X, but that would have cost almost 5x as much, from a reputable supplier. Your comments on the working distance convinced me that this might be the better, easier to work with, option. It would be interesting if Closeupphotography put up a comparison of these two lenses. Just wonder how the my Leitz and Zeiss microscope lenses would live up to the quality of this Mitutoyo? They easily live up to the resolution challenge of todays camera sensors and I do not see any chromatic aberration, using them on the Leitz Tool Inspection microscope. On the camera I haven't tested them, but if cell walls and bacteria can be seen clearly through them, they should have no problem with the resolution of much larger details in insects. Fact is that the sensors of our most modern cameras are still lagging far behind the resolution that most good quality microscope lenses provide.
This an excellent objective. Got mine from Lightglass Optics a couple of years ago - great price, brand new. Unfortunately they’re out of 10x :(…picked up a 20x, though. Love your channel.

Yes. The 10X does provide FF coverage if the infinity space is minimized. I would prefer using a cropped frame sensor under some lighting conditions, specifically when the risk of internal reflection is elevated (which would allow me to extend the relay/objective space).
One day i hope you upgrade to BRASS step rings - they won't get stuck to each other, they don't sound like a chalk board when screwed on and the "feel" is far superior 👍👍

You would need a Raynox DCR150 (200mm lens), some extension tubes (or much better- a PB6 bellows) an adapter for the raynox to F/Z-mount and an adapter for the Raynox, to M26 objective mount, and some extension tubes, And a stackshot. OK, so I was wrong. You need a lot of expensive gear. But you should still get it - there is nothing else that comes close - save yourself some cash and buy a used Stackshot (see $10 saved right there!), and you don't need the 3X (another $100) - how can you not get it with those savings! Seriously though, if you are serious about image quality, you will never regret going out on a limb to get this gear. It will last you forever and if you change your mind, every single bit of your investment will be recouped when you sell it. Cared for, this gear does not lose value. Tough decision. Good luck!

what nikon camera would you suggest that has the pixel pitch that justifies the high quality of a mityutoyo objectives especialy when going to 20x mag.
HI Allan , What is the recomended step size in amacro rail for a 10x objective . I believe the DOF of a 10x is 4.5 micron. So i guess 10 micron will be good enough. Is this enough to take care of the little variation in step size as i am making my own motorised rail with a NISI m-180. Which is the better objective, the amscope one or the generic stuff
It depends on the subject, but 10um is a good starting point. I would recommend shooting a short test run and looking for evidence of banding. The NiSi should be able to handle 10, mechanically, as long as your stepper is able to deliver the increments accurately. You will need to pay close attention to backlash when setting up the motor and rail. There will be quite a bit, but as long as you program a first step long enough to take up the slack, but not long enough to move the carriage, you should be fine. Unfortunately, I have never found a generic or Amscope 10X objective that was any good for photography. The best entry level objective in the Nikon CFI Plan 10x - great lens, good value.

Hi Allan - Very informative video as always. I will have to get my crop sensor Canon 7D serviced to use with the Mitutoyo but will manage on full frame for now. I now have a modern 200mm Canon prime lens and almost all the adapters I need to mount it wth the Mitutoyo. I have gone with the Wemacro adapter they now have for the Mitutoyo. The other one was a bit too heavy on my wallet what with duty and postage. Thanks again for the tip off about Lightglass Optics. Regards, Barry
Hey Allan, I am confused now because the objective picture they have for the Mitutoyo on the Lightglass Optics site doesn't have the "X" and the one at Closeuphotography does have the "X". Did anyone else notice? So I'm wondering which one is right or maybe Mity just changed their labeling scheme... Hi Alex, this has always confused me. I was under the impression that there was just one authentic lens, but when you think about it, why would that be the case. Mitutoyo is gigantic and they make huge numbers of these objectives for many different markets. It should not surprise me that their markings have changed over time (but it still does surprise me). But I have both these styles and others beside that, and every one has a certificate of authenticity. More important they are all optically superb. I guess that is as close to certain as I am going to get!

What can you tell/say about the stepsize in general with the objective?
Well it depends on a number of factors, but you should be safe at 20um. I recommend you start about there and see if you can stretch it out a bit - you often can. But even good rails may become less precise over time, so keeping a close eye out for banding. Remember - too short and you have a few extra images, too long and you have no image.
I do some work in metrology and at some level you are correct, for your average job shop type machine shop could be covered in 1-2 courses at a community college. If you have the need to measure and align things to sub micron levels, that takes multiple degrees in physics and engineering.
I was thinking of you when that gag occurred to me! Trust me, I know how intense that field is. I just read a book on precision last month and it was a real eye opener. I was hoping that all the engineers out there would know my tongue was firmly in my cheek. Which is an interesting saying - where else would it be?
Today I was working on cobbling together a custom laser interferometer to measure displacement because our ultra precision indicator probes spring force (0.0056 lbs) was deforming the parts and ruining the measurement.

Side note: have you tried adding extension to your tube lens to increase the image circle size when using a mitutoyo objective? Adding about 32mm of extension tubes to my 135mm lens (Sony 135mm F1.8 GM) completely eliminated any hint of vignette. Adding 52mm of extension to my 100-400mm lens (Sony 100-400mm F5.6 GM) got rid of most of the vignette. So far I only tested the removal of vignette, I have not done a full stack and image quality comparison but at least on the camera screen I don’t see a loss of iq.
@@andrewh2341 I have tried it with other objectives with varying results in terms of IQ. I do not like cutting the infinity space to short so I am willing to try anything. It is why I use an APSC with Mits - so that I can stay 30mm out in from of the relay lens. I never even thought about adding extension to a 200mm lens. I have a go at it tonight. Thanks Andrew!

HI Allan , I propose to buy a mityutoyo 10x objective though i am a starter. My thinking is i can start with a tube of about 100mm to get 5x and then use the lens to 10x after some experiance . Am i right? THANKS
Hi - I think your plan has theoretical merit, but you may be less excited with the results. It is true that there are some 10x objectives that perform well at lower magnifications, the Nikon CFI Plan 10x comes to mind, but I have been less impressed with the Mitutoyo M-Plan used in the same way. I think it has something to do with the aberration correction and how it optimized for use with a 200mm relay lens. If you are not in a hurry, I am actually planning to test a few 10X objectives as 5X lenses later this autumn and I will release a video of the results.

HI Allan , i just chatted with an edmond optics engineer and was advised to use a 5x objective for 5x rather than 10x with a shortened tube as image will be degraded. Waiting to see your practical results.
@@radharamanan5003 That is hardly surprising, I would not expect an objective vendor to agree with a method that reduces your need for a new objective, however, I agree completely. As I said earlier, you will not find the 10X M-Plan to be a very good 5X objective. But it is a superlative 10X optic, just as the 5X is probably the best lens of its type, in the world, especially at the price (if you do decide to get a 5X, get it from LightGlass Optics - The owner has agreed to make this objective available, new and factory boxed, to my viewers for roughly half the price that EO offers. Jeff will help - 505-235-9468 - tell him I sent you). You should look into the $200 Nikon CFI plan achromat if you want a 10X that is just as sharp at 5X - that is what I use. But once you take a single picture with the Mitutoyo M-Plan 5X, you will be spoiled for life. It is unbelievably accurate and sharp. By the way, the video for this comparison is still a couple of months away, but the images have all been collected - based on my initial review, I would not recommend using the 10X at any magnification other than its rated 10X with a high quality 200mm relay lens.

Ie having the tube length plus or minus 5 mm ? how does one calculate the exact distance from the focal plane of the camera? ie from the focal plane on the body of the camera to the microscope objective front.. middle or base?

SL = Super Long Working Distance
The HR is a the high resolution version of the M-Plan objectives and is available in the 5X, 10X, 50X, and 100X. They will exceed the ability of most consumer camera sensors to resolve detail, with 5X resolving line pairs of 1.3um as opposed to 2um with the non-HR. It would therefore seem like the huge premium you would pay for the HR could be better spent to two additional non-HR M-plans! As Psyaiko Aiko has already mentioned below, the SL lenses have a slightly longer WD, but are only made in the 20X, 50X, ad 100X lenses. I am not sure that the added WD adds anything - it is already far longer than anything else affordable, but it could be well worth the investment in some industrial applications.

Thanks for all of these videos to catch up with. Regards the D850 vs D500 for these objectives, I am using 1.2 image area with my D850. You end up with images 6K pixels across vs. 5500 or so for the D500. I plan on trying both though and going with the best image quality.
I've just ordered one from Lightglass Optics. I had been tempted by a Nikon CFI Super Fluor 4X, but that would have cost almost 5x as much, from a reputable supplier. Your comments on the working distance convinced me that this might be the better, easier to work with, option. It would be interesting if Closeupphotography put up a comparison of these two lenses. Keep up the good work. P.S. My Nikon bellows just arrived from Japan!

Just wonder how the my Leitz and Zeiss microscope lenses would live up to the quality of this Mitutoyo? They easily live up to the resolution challenge of todays camera sensors and I do not see any chromatic aberration, using them on the Leitz Tool Inspection microscope. On the camera I haven't tested them, but if cell walls and bacteria can be seen clearly through them, they should have no problem with the resolution of much larger details in insects. Fact is that the sensors of our most modern cameras are still lagging far behind the resolution that most good quality microscope lenses provide.
This an excellent objective. Got mine from Lightglass Optics a couple of years ago - great price, brand new. Unfortunately they’re out of 10x :(…picked up a 20x, though. Love your channel.

Have you using Mitutoyo M Plan 10X (you mentioned in previous youtube video)for full frame photo shooting ? Can it cover 24x36mm ? Thanks a lot .
Yes. The 10X does provide FF coverage if the infinity space is minimized. I would prefer using a cropped frame sensor under some lighting conditions, specifically when the risk of internal reflection is elevated (which would allow me to extend the relay/objective space).
