Wow. As a psychologist I really liked this movie. This short film describes perfectly the horror we can experience in our inner world.. It talks about loneliness and depression. Depressed people need someone who loves them and helps them with their deep guilt. The problem is that the more you are involved in your guilt, the less you are effectively able to get a connection with another human being. Every feedback on the relationship (also with real costructive intention) is seen as an abandonment. The more they feel abandoned, the more they can act out aggressively. And then they feel guilty, and they get more depressed. They are unable to repair conflicts because they are so fullfilled by their guilt: they can’t move their attention from their own emotions to the emotions of somebody else. As the guy, that instead of using his guilt to repair the relationship with his sister, closed the door and used it to committ suicide. The solution can be about learning to repair. It can be hard, but it is possible.

Hello! I was very attracted by your comment, and I would also like to know what exactly the guest is an allegory of?

    • @EleonoraAlecci-vf6dh
      @EleonoraAlecci-vf6dh 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

For me the guest is the allegory of the emotion that comes to visit us when we are depressed. Someone perceives it as anguish, someone as sadness, someone as apathy, but actually in depth it is an infinite guilt. A fault that - until unconscious - seems impossible to overcome. Since it is so big, only something equally big could wash it away (like suicide: you kill yourself to get out of the way, because you are useless to life, because you are all wrong, because you are a burden to the people you love). The girl does not see the guest in the room - I mean at the end of the film - because she has not yet realized that her brother is dead. But the last memory she has of him is of the time she treated him badly. I think she'll see it.

He has eyes with no lids, nor tears
He has fingers but no nails nor prints.
He has a mouth, but not speaks,
He feels sorrow but cannot heals.
All he can do is being there for you,
When you desperately in need of
    Feel someone near you.
    Where ever he goes,
    despair follows.
    Sometimes it ends
    On the gallows...

I genuinely believe this is one of the most heart-wrenching pieces of media I've ever experienced. I came in expecting some adrenaline and jump scares and I was left staring at the credits scene, tears quite literally flowing down my face. This film obviously isn't as deep as I make it out to be to everyone, but in my eyes it is one of the most eerily perfect ways to depict the fear, hatred, acceptance, and hopelessness suicidal thoughts bring, and how they can effect other people too.
I'm by no means a film critic, but I could spend hours talking to anyone who listens about how the guest, in my eyes, represents both suicidal thoughts and the arms of death that claim those who act on them. This specific thought is mostly driven by the differences in how Mia and Mary interacted with him versus how Ethan did. Mia and Mary both seem to have resorted to their attempts because of their terror at the presence of the guest- the suicidal thoughts. Ethan, however, doesn't seem to fear him, implying how he'd accepted his actions completely, and even found comfort in the thoughts themselves- the hug scene absolutely *devastated* me and I had to replay it nearly twenty times before I could let myself move on.
Another topic I'm having to limit myself on how much I ride about is the guest himself. His appearance is, honestly speaking, an absolutely perfect way to represent suicidal thoughts. The way his sudden appearance feels like a punch in the gut is *exactly* how these thoughts can feel. My reaction to the thoughts, and possibly other people's too, is a feeling or helplessness. It feels a bit like a rug has been pulled from my feet or, like the reactions to the guest, I've been socked in the stomach. The accuracy of the depiction of this feeling in the film never fails to astound me, even months after I watched it for the first time. And honestly, the only genre truly fit to depict what suicide truly feels like can only be horror, which this film shows amazingly.
I know I tend to get far too moved by films that others simply shrug off, but I will never stop loving the feeling of connecting the dots and the whole movie seemingly opening up to me, even if the theories I create are wrong. Any assumptions I've made or conclusions I've jumped to could easily be nothing more than incorrect rambling, but my interpretation of this film comforts me in a way that nothing else has yet to do. The complexity of the characters, the enhancement the cinematography offers, the timing of the music- it all comes together to wrap up into what I have seen to be a harrowing, devastating, and eye-opening film hidden underneath the guise of being a horror film. 10/10, have already and will continue to recommend.

I LOVED this. I remember watching the first one a few years ago with one of my friends and coming up with our own theories on what was going on with the guest. It was and still is one of my favorite things floating around on youtube and I'm so glad I've stumbled across Guest 2. I like how the first one had a lot of mystery that we could put together, and how it was more horror based, as this one we grow attached to the characters and learn more about them as we come to realize the Guests presence. its more clear in this one that it's a resemblance of depression and i really adore that. Aside from jokes, mental health isn't spoke about too much. I was hoping to see in depth analysis' on this in the comments, but there are people pointing out how this isn't the typical horror they like. I LOVE THIS AND I THINK JILL AND MIA ARE ADORABLE (is it bad i lowkey ship them?) regardless i love this, i love you and your crew's work SM!!!

Really this didn't make me scared at all... more just sad. In the first short film there was more disturbance to me, but this just felt heartbreaking to watch. It's truly beautiful though, and a heart wrenching way to portray all these dark feelings all of us have at some point. We can't get rid of it, not really, not in the way we wish we could. That's how I view it anyway. Wonderful work though, there were so many small details I appreciated, especially the change in lighting that would happen from yellows to blues very quickly, yet subtly. I can tell it was made with a lot of love and it shows in the film! Much love, stay safe

I'm Mia. And Ethan. Apart from the last consequence, but I've been there. I know the guest. For many years. And I've been Jill as well. That's what made me Ethan. Does that make sense? I feel like the Guest makeup effects look worse than the original short. The original looks more "fake", but it gives it this unsettling quality, while this version looks more cartoony and downright goofy at times.
But the story? M'wa! Chef's kiss! The characters felt genuine and sympathetic, their troubles felt equally genuine, felt like real mental health problems than a stereotypically villainizing or hollywood glamourising that a lot of depictions get. Jill and Mias coffeeshop date was so well acted, with good, believably-awkward dialogue. The conversation about the platypus joke was sweet, and the little aborted finger touch was an adorable moment.
The camera work was really good, particularly the slow panning shots that built tension well!
The use of the Guest as a representation of trauma/depression was done very well, especially at the end when Ethan "embraces" his depression and takes his life. It shows how those thoughts and feelings can act as a comfort to those at that point. It isn't malevolent, nor is it beneficial. It simply is. Ethan chooses to embrace it, in a final act if self destruction. Mia struggles trying to live with it, rejecting both it and, being a manifestation of a part of her, herself too.
The first one was definitely more of a horror, that hinted at a deeper meaning. This one is less of a horror, but it's story is far more engaging and connects far deeper.

I felt like the different eyes you used for The Guest took me out of it a bit too much. The original eyes looked painted on, these eyes look more fake/plastic/cgi(?), and lopsided, which made The Guest look more goofy (at least, compared to the original). Other than that this was an amazing piece! I loved the atmosphere the story made, the anguish mixed with moments of happiness. Well done!

I think the Guest represents depression but also, in a counterintuitive way, the very thing that challenges depression. They stand as but a mere witness, not a participant. They observe without judgement and watch solemnly as one decides whether or not they should keep going.

(plus the blue lighting... makes it feel sadder....). it also evokes some thoughts and feelings for me. i am not as observant as i would like, however i love it when i can notice such details. the cards next to Ethan's sink are also pretty meaningful for me, even if i can not manage to quite read all of it. man, this is a great short. kudos to everyone involved in it.

are his eyes so big and deprived of eyelids because he always has to keep on watching? is he expresionless so as to not show any reaction to what he is witness to? is he intentionally stripped of all sign of individuality (no distinct facial features, no hair, no voice, no words uttered at all) - even his clothes are pitch black, or am i just reading too much into it? if so, that reinforces that he is just a neutral witnesss. but yup, sure he does scare you, just like your past trauma does...
also, even as monstrous as he looks, he never shows delight at the suffering of the people. if anything, he looks hurt. anyways, that is my small reflection upon revisiting this, as i've let the feelings and emotions simmer for a bit.

I just got finished with this short film and was not bored in any second of it whatsoever. It was beyond incredible, the acting was better than most hollywood movies I've seen, and the weight of the sadness and despair was so realistic it felt like I was inside the screen, or perhaps inside the short film itself. The Guest doesnt give me a stereotypically evil chaotic villain, more of so one that doesn't want to hurt anyone. Again, amazing acting, amazing writing and cinematography. You are very underated, may your short films be known through many many people. ❤ Much love.
