It is so amazing how she masters the jumping technique to push the energy of the jump all the way to the end of the third triple ! Simply a great jumper with unique and beautiful style and grace !
this woman is a genius. she popped out this 3-3-3 during sasha's romeo and juliet. like they say, she attacks their minds, and she ended up on top. high five! i also wonder what it would be like if sasha skated to Nessun Dorma
I just wonder how long it will be until we see 3/3/3 combos like Shizukas become almost mandatory in competitions, much in the same way the 3Lutz/3TL has become recently...........
Dustin Tran That's because doing a 3-3-3 combo is really stupid in competition and gives you no advantage. It's a very difficult combination, especially because the last 3T / 3Lo is prone to under-rotation calls, and because COP does not reward difficulty of combinations it's pointless. No mater what I'm doing 7 triples and without a reward for difficulty of combinations, there is no reason to do a 3-3-3.
Totally agree, she has it all. Just watch her effortless speed as she strokes around the rink. Her jumps are huge and she doesn't flutz. I think her height gives her a commanding presence. And her mentality was "I am here to win." She knew what she had to do, and she didn't do it.
Technically perfect or not, she oozes confidence. And she looks marvellous in black. As the comment says 'I could watch this all day'. Thanks for posting, periofran!
If 2006 was flat, exactly what Olympic year had so much better performances? Looking back, it's usually a case of whose obvious mistakes were less flagrant. Mercifully, Shizuka's LP was clean, elegant and musical in an unforgettable way and likely the best Olympic LP ever to this point. The 2008 World's were nothing special, so we'll see about 2010 but it will be tough for this crop to reach what Shizuka did.
You know, it's crazy how good she was. but the fact was, the ladies field was lacking so much that night that she did on 5 triples and got the gold. she didn't even need a 3-3. The LP at the olympics was a little flat in 2006. Shizuka did great, but she didn't bring the house down. I think the 2010 olympics are going to be awesome. You'll have so many good skaters...
Shizuka was skating just to be on the podium. She would've been happy with 3rd. Winning was a big surprise for her when the top two messed up, much like how Sarah won four years earlier when the top two favorites messed up.
I wanna go ice skating right now! She is the loveliest skater ever. In my opinion she is much better than Kim Yuna. I wish Shizuka was still skating competitively now. I absolutely love her skating so much and she nailed that triple-triple-triple combo!
I completely agree. It's just the first part of her career was quite unfortunate, as soon as she got Tatiana Tarasova as a coach she won in 2 months her world title and then olympics. I am sure she would have been the top contender for any title at the beginning of 2000s having Tatiana as a coach a bit before. Her technique was waaaay superior to any lady at that time and her artistry blossomed with Tarasova. She was doing 3lz3loop even before Zagitova was born. 3Sal3loop was like nothing for her. Probably she was also the first lady to show off 3x3x3 -s in early 2000s
Wow, she really did peak in Torino, didn't she? I don't think there's any skater that is powerful and graceful at the same time like her. I love love lover how she glides on the ice! She makes such a big circle on such a deep edge, on one foot!
I think she definitely intimidated a few of the other skaters. ;D Is it just me, or does she seem much happier (facial-wise) when performing nowadays? She has a smile on her face most of the time now. She used to look very stoic. She's an elegant skater too. (:
she's amazing, how great is her 3-3-3? was there only her on the olympic ice who could do that? and is it just me, or does she suit skating in leggings much better than she does a dress? i think it gives her a better line, it just suits her better
very nice, i saw here today (feb 14 2010) and she still looks amazing... she was at west end community centre in vancouver bc, there were a few fans there, but it was supposed to be a secret. but she still looks great!
@MTVMANN Me too, If she had done her triple combinations like she was doing in practice it would have been one of the great skates ever at the Olympics.
Yes she had the ONLY flaw, her flip had more outside edge than any eteri girls lutzes do but those times there were no deduction for it. The only difference for her lz and f was the entrance ... all else jumps spins spirals and so on she had (still has) were just PERFECT
Her 3-3-3 was to Sasha's music, which's so much more awesome than Shizuka's music... Arakawa has the best Ina Bauer in history, ya? Though Nagasu's also got that bionic back...
How can you say that ... Nensun dorma is an amazing piece of music one of the best in history probably. Considering the fact that pavaroti sang it in the opening and then she did her iconic performance in Torino, it was the best Free skate in terms of performance in both Woman and Mad together
ahhh.... you have every though I had! I wished the earth was ice and I was the only one who could waltz and flip to school, and cars with blades. The entire reason I skated was 'cause when I was young it looked like flying, and I ALWAYS wanted to fly
荒川静香さん以外で3-3-3できる人は他に誰ですか?荒川さんは公式な試合で成功したことはあるのですか?練習でだけですか? Who else can do 3-3-3 sequal jumps besides Shizuka Arakawa? Has she ever officially landed it before? Only at training?
arghh im gonna miss her the way she made her jumps and ina bauer or the chance to see making a 3-3-3 as nobody else cant do(yes i know kostner can) one of the things i noticed here is that in practice she made the second lutz a double and the loop a 3,in her program she made the opposite =S
I undid one thumbs down for you .... why do people give thumbs down to accurate observations? The flip is definitely outside edge ... i wonder why both she and miki have the same problem ... did they used to have the same coach, ie, shizuka's mother?
what about the short programme? what components must the have, know they can have 3 jump 3 combo 2/3 jump and 2A what about 3A 3F-3Lo 3L what about the number of spins and stuff?
ok, so what would be the best combinations for the most amount of points. Let's say im mao asada fused with ando miki and i can do 3A and 4S 3A-2L-2L 3Lz-3L 3Lz 3F-3L 3F 4S 2A it that possible
If you fused Miki and Mao, the jumps layout would be.. 3A 3Lz+3Lo 4S 3F+3Lo+2Lo 3Lz 2A+3T 2A base mark for jumps alone are already 7.5, 9.5, 11, 10.5, 6, 7.5, 3.5 not including the GOE and 10% bonus after 2 minutes mark.
thank you for the info phusk8r, but to be honest I'm not a sk8 judge not even a professional skater & the only thing that I care about isd what I feel when I see these girls skating. I'm sorry you got the 2nd, I hope you didnt know what you just told me because in case you did... well... anyway I isist, this one was just a rehalse & it's obvious she didnt cheat on landing at the main moment because she got the gold.
she has as good jumps and speed as yuna + 3loop, plus better spins and spirals ... her toe pick is way more aesthetic without any toe hammering and most importantly she has all the flexibility you wish her to have
That 3/3/3 was so cheated on the 3rd jump, but nice attempt! She was on fire during this practice and much better than in her LP... she didn't do any of her 3/3 combinations. But she still won!
It's a pity that the rules don't allow skaters as much freedom in the long programme as in previous years. I would have loved to see Shizuka do the 3sal/3toe/3loop combo in the competition. Stupid silly rules don't allow the really talented skaters to shine anymore.
what made her the best was her skating AND her ability to not crack under pressure and not make mistakes. the others made mistakes BECAUSE they aren't the best.
My God! you guys are incredible! 1st of all who cares about cheating on landing, she looks gtear and did it gtear, you know what, just for your info hshe got the Gold medal!! ho I forgot something, this one was a rehalse only! my my my....
I wish she had done those combinations.....I mean she would have been undisputably the best, and would have been a huge first....not (she only won cause others made mistakes)---she really was the best skater there at the time.
I don't know what's in the water in Japan but all the top modern skaters have such wonderful soft knees and great flow out of their jumps.
I think most of us Japanese have strong knees that we inherit from past generations
I know...they all have awesome skating skills for some reason.
Her skating is buttery smooth... I miss that quality.
super 3-3-3 combo!!! so great!!!!
she is so graceful, she puts so much emotion into her skating,i almost cried watching her win in 2004,shes sooo imba!
It is so amazing how she masters the jumping technique to push the energy of the jump all the way to the end of the third triple ! Simply a great jumper with unique and beautiful style and grace !
this woman is a genius. she popped out this 3-3-3 during sasha's romeo and juliet. like they say, she attacks their minds, and she ended up on top. high five!

No mater what I'm doing 7 triples and without a reward for difficulty of combinations, there is no reason to do a 3-3-3.
Well it turned out somewhat different. Now it's triple Lutz triple loop and of course a quad.
去年ショーで3-3-3を跳んでいるのを見たという人がいた。いまだにこのクオリティーを保っているとは……
Shizuka is the queen of ice and the most beautifull figure skater ever
Sasha Cohen is more beautiful than Shizuka.
1:17 deeper outside edge flip than most girls’ lutz
well triple flip should be on the inside edge, so...
You know, it's crazy how good she was. but the fact was, the ladies field was lacking so much that night that she did on 5 triples and got the gold. she didn't even need a 3-3. brings me to tears

Shizuka's carriage through the eyes is exquisite... those edges and soft knees... Uh!
the ice* xD!
shes beautiful
Wow, there's no other way to describe it.
Wow, she really did peak in Torino, didn't she? I don't think there's any skater that is powerful and graceful at the same time like her. I love love lover how she glides on the ice! She makes such a big circle on such a deep edge, on one foot!
1:35
2:20 Look at how deep her edges are!
Yes, she really got down into the ice really well and produced huge and powerful strides.
i love this video... all beautiful jumps, all so much control in them..
Shizuka Arakawa is working for a Japanese TV as a commentator for the winter games. So you saw her there.
I think David Pelletier had a bit of a crush on Shizuka. :)
haha !
Didn't we all?
yes... we all did...❤️
I think she definitely intimidated a few of the other skaters. ;D
Is it just me, or does she seem much happier (facial-wise) when performing nowadays? She has a smile on her face most of the time now. She used to look very stoic.

I can't believe my eyes... 3-3-3...
Like the guy said, I could have watched her all day long
@MTVMANN Me too, If she had done her triple combinations like she was doing in practice it would have been one of the great skates ever at the Olympics.
@ViVi80 I love your honest opinion. I completely agree with you.
1:16 triple flip outside edge?????
Yes she had the ONLY flaw, her flip had more outside edge than any eteri girls lutzes do but those times there were no deduction for it. The only difference for her lz and f was the entrance ... all else jumps spins spirals and so on she had (still has) were just PERFECT
I really wish she would have done all of that in her LP...but still what she did was AMAZING! I have been a fan of her since the 2002 Four Continents!
That looks so beautiful! I really hope one day I can do that, it looks so fun!
Her 3-3-3 was to Sasha's music, which's so much more awesome than Shizuka's music...
Arakawa has the best Ina Bauer in history, ya? Though Nagasu's also got that bionic back...

She is one of the few female skaters I know who has a body. Not a twig. But a feminine, curvy, beautiful body. Represent!
ahhh.... you have every though I had! I wished the earth was ice and I was the only one who could waltz and flip to school, and cars with blades. The entire reason I skated was 'cause when I was young it looked like flying, and I ALWAYS wanted to fly
@makeitupwoohoo
yuna is great and lyrical
but shizuka is magical.
Well ... we can talk about a "triple-triple-something" combination 'cos she rotates more on the ice than in the air 🤷🏻♂️
Phychological attack!!
Who else can do 3-3-3 sequal jumps besides Shizuka Arakawa? Has she ever officially landed it before? Only at training?
@MTVMANN totally! I wanted to see this in her LP but she didn't do any 3/3's. Skating clean pays off though.
arghh im gonna miss her the way she made her jumps and ina bauer or the chance to see making a 3-3-3 as nobody else cant do(yes i know kostner can) one of the things i noticed here is that in practice she made the second lutz a double and the loop a 3,in her program she made the opposite =S
i love your comments
she ist cool
well the last jump is underrotated
1:35 i start to feel my pulse rising!
I undid one thumbs down for you .... why do people give thumbs down to accurate observations? The flip is definitely outside edge ... i wonder why both she and miki have the same problem ... did they used to have the same coach, ie, shizuka's mother?
what about the short programme? what components must the have, know they can have
3 jump
3 combo 2/3 jump
and 2A
what about
3A
3F-3Lo
3L
what about the number of spins and stuff?
I couldn't imagine I can't do that on the floor
I think that Risa Shoji is a mini Shizuka! :)
It might have been a little cheated, but who cares, it was amazing and had she done it in the competition would have made history
Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto
ok, so what would be the best combinations for the most amount of points. Let's say im mao asada fused with ando miki and i can do 3A and 4S
3A-2L-2L
3Lz-3L
3Lz
3F-3L
3F
4S
2A
it that possible
benjamin agosto = one lucky bastard for havinbg tanith belbin all for himself
Would have been laid out like this.
3S-3T-3Lo
3Lz
3F
2A
3Lz-2Lo
3F-2Lo
2A
Actually 3A can be. The rule said 2A or 3A must be included in the short program, but 99.99% of the ladies can't land 3A so nobody attenpt one.
If you fused Miki and Mao, the jumps layout would be..
3A
3Lz+3Lo
4S
3F+3Lo+2Lo
3Lz
2A+3T
2A
base mark for jumps alone are already 7.5, 9.5, 11, 10.5, 6, 7.5, 3.5 not including the GOE and 10% bonus after 2 minutes mark.
@Indiegirl007 I noticed that! She's absolutely beautiful- she has a woman's figure. Absolutely stunning.
1:36〜 3-3-3
✨💞✨
Surya is the best
thank you for the info phusk8r, but to be honest I'm not a sk8 judge not even a professional skater & the only thing that I care about isd what I feel when I see these girls skating. coool
she reminds me of yuna kim.
she has as good jumps and speed as yuna + 3loop, plus better spins and spirals ... her toe pick is way more aesthetic without any toe hammering and most importantly she has all the flexibility you wish her to have
Yuna kim remains me of Michelle kwan.
That 3/3/3 was so cheated on the 3rd jump, but nice attempt! She was on fire during this practice and much better than in her LP... she didn't do any of her 3/3 combinations. But she still won!
is that true, would she use up all her triples?
確か浅田真央さんが最初に成功させたんじゃないでしょうか?真央さんは年齢制限で出られませんでした。それでも荒川選手は真央さんを意識していたのでは?
It's a pity that the rules don't allow skaters as much freedom in the long programme as in previous years. I would have loved to see Shizuka do the 3sal/3toe/3loop combo in the competition. Stupid silly rules don't allow the really talented skaters to shine anymore.
what made her the best was her skating AND her ability to not crack under pressure and not make mistakes. the others made mistakes BECAUSE they aren't the best.
watch it agaiun really its not inside you can also verifie it 2:29 :)
she was much better here than in her actual long program, imo
lol I just saw the beginning of it
Wow. For a someone so short she can do that. She is so strong.
really? are you good? i'd like to see you skate. can you send me a video of u practicing or competing?
wow she is good but I still like Steven Adcock
同感!
what about her lip then???
My God! you guys are incredible! 1st of all who cares about cheating on landing, she looks gtear and did it gtear, you know what, just for your info hshe got the Gold medal!! ho I forgot something, this one was a rehalse only! my my my....
I wish she had done those combinations.....I mean she would have been undisputably the best, and would have been a huge first....not (she only won cause others made mistakes)---she really was the best skater there at the time.
so how many triples can women do? 7? So you can do as many doubles as you want.
so
3Lz-2Lo-2Lo
3F-2Lo-2Lo
3L-2L-2T
3F
3Lz
3S-3T
2A
the triple loop on the triple/triple/triple look cheated.
Would have been the same amount of points here.
3S-2Lo-2Lo
3Lz
3F
2A
3Lz-3Lo
3F-3T
2A
no it didnt
@equallyeasilyfuqyou nice name though.
Shizuka wasn't a good skater. Until 2005, she totally changed. However, she had a short peak in her career, it's enough.
