It’s interesting to me that so many people have said that the end of the movie resulted in sadness and silence. For me, it was the opposite. There was essentially a part 2 coming, so not all was lost. The story wasn’t over. The only sad thing was, it was gonna be a year to see where things went.

I always appreciated how Tony's suits evolved because of problems he had in the last movie. In Civil War he lost in hand-to-hand fighting to Steve, and in this movie he has a *ton* of new features to use in melee vs Thanos. Back when this first aired, a question popped up everywhere.... "Who's death hit you the hardest?" The majority of responses went to Black Panther. My own answer was in the minority. Hearing Drax say, "Quill" just before fading away hurts a lot!

This was genius filmmaking. It shattered our perceptions that “The good guys always win.” We’d grown accustomed as moviegoers to expect it. Here, Thanos won, and the viewers had their minds blown. This is EXACTLY what a previous generation experienced with The Empire Strikes Back. People were shocked and stunned in that movie too. Well, you managed to reach the 2nd stage of the 5 stages of grief... Anger... so that's pretty cool... It's very fascinating the effect cinema can have on people... I held it in when other characters went out... but when Peter started dying, just the way he died... Like, he could feel himself slowly dying due to his Spider sense, which is why he wasn't "feeling so good" before it... truly heartbreaking and I let all the tears out at that moment... and even at the end he's still apologizing to Tony that he should've stayed on Earth... Just... wow!
"United We Stand, Divided We Fall" that's not me, that's what the quote on the Captain America Civil War poster says... and as you see, the Avengers weren't united in this one, and they fell, and lost, and not only them, the whole universe with them...
This really seems like a Thanos film to me after I think about it, rather than being an Avengers film... Like, it starts off with him and follows him on his mission, while the Avengers are trying to stop him however they can... and it ends with him completing his mission... and as a matter of Fact... Thanos has the highest screen time in the whole movie... which is almost 30 minutes... and then comes Gamora with a 20 minutes of screen time... and THEN comes Tony Stark, an Avenger, with 17 minutes of screen time in total...
Usually a Marvel movie used to end with a happy feeling and good vibes you know, and I mean, everyone was feeling it when Thor arrived in Wakanda... that moment will forever stay in my mind as the moment the theater turned into a stadium... But then, after giving good vibes for the past 18 movies... they decide to do THIS on their 10th anniversary... kill half of their characters off... making everyone in the theater go dead silent and some even sobbing, like it was a funeral...
But anyways, Nick Fury's dead too, and "Thanos will return"... Let's see where our journey towards Ant-Man and The Wasp takes us!
Edit: Oh, and about the thing you were saying, about where the story could've gone if Star Lord didn't lose his cool... The writers were pretty clever in that department, so that we don't question their logic... they were only supposed to win in 1 out of the 14 million possibilities Dr Strange saw... So Dr Strange could've stopped Quill with his powers from messing the plan... but he didn't... cuz in their 1 winning possibility, Quill was supposed to lose his cool and eventually Thanos was supposed to win... So like, we can't blame Quill now... now that we know.

That whole scene of Dr. Strange going toe to toe with Thanos (with four freaking infinity stones) is my favorite time in the whole MCU. I loved the way they included his spells in this (Images of Ikonn, Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, Bolts of Balthakk, and others).
As a kid I desperately dreamed to see the comics portrayed on the big screen. Finally got to in my late 30's. Was fantastic, even if the MCU has crapped the bed fairly hard since. But this was them at the height of storytelling. A decade of buildup and then they laid this on us. I still remember how incredible and heartbreaking it was walking out of the theater.

I remember when this movie came out, 4 of us went to the theatre to watch. The car ride to the show as full of excitement, we exchanged theories as to what we think will happen. And the car ride back home was very quiet, pin drop silence. A movie has never hit us this hard.

  • @tomr5577

a little story: in the theater, there was a group behind me and my son that were clearly not all caught up on the story, people who had not seen all the movies.
one was frantically whisper background details to the rest during the beginning of the opening.
and then.... as you commented, things started happening. everyone went silent.
and then more than one person from that group said things like "oh my god" or "oh no". crying, and it wouldn't be the last.
people who would never seen the previous movies, suddenly and instantly caught up, moved, feeling the storytelling right down to their bones.
watching you react, and honestly express how this film made you feel - it's pretty much what we all felt when we first saw this. glorious acts of valor, heroic sacrifice, unashamedly evil characters, pointless loss, unimaginable turns!

17:59 They had been working on that scene for a while (like 7 takes), and in the script, Spiderman doesn't say anything, just collapses and disappears. Tom Holland ad libbed the "I don't want to go I don't want to go!" on the spot, during the take, and it's the one they used. I remember that part in the the theaters, and the impact his ad lib had was like a shockwave through the place. A couple of people lost it there, breaking down sobbing, while there was a collective gasp. I was rock-solid-still in my seat, trying not to make a sound but with tears streaming down my cheeks. The end of Infinity War is ROUGH, but I've always been a proponent that not every situation can come out 100% okay, especially in a movie with "War" in the name, and I'm happy they "killed off" so many heroes. It made the impact just that much more painful, and it's seared into my mind... I know the exact feelings I had, the time, the place, everything.

The best way I have heard it put to explain this movie and its ending with the Avengers losing is that "This isn't the Avengers movie this is THANOS' movie". Because this is the story of Thanos' real introduction to most of our heroes. Its his movie from start to finish he begins with stating his goals and starting his journey and we see him continue to progress through HIS journey as our heroes play the role of 'antagonists" doing their best to stop him, and at the end the "protagonist" wins and finishes his journey sat watching the sunset on a grateful universe.

As CinemaWins says, this is "A Moment In Film."
Yeah, sure, there have been movies where the bad guy has won. This one was different, precisely because of the ten years of buildup to get invested in this characters, to get to know them and feel like they're part of our lives. Then to watch them lose, to watch them DIE, to watch them fail harder than anyone has ever failed at anything. Utterly intense, and a brilliant job at making the villain the protagonist. This is totally Thanos' story, his quest, his goal, his victory. It really gets you.
Beyond that, just a monument of filmmaking. So many characters and plot threads, and not a single second is wasted. Every frame is doing at least two, often three or four things at the same time, because the story is too BIG for anything else. Every moment is critical. Just astonishing.

  • @timstackii

As someone who had read the comics many years before this movie, I knew what was going to happen (more or less) before it did. I got to sit and see how my friends and the other people in the theatre reacted. So many kids went into that movie excited and came out sobbing and destroyed.
I will say, as incredible as it sounds, they DRASTICALLY reduced Thanos and the gauntlet's powers for the MCU. In the comics he is infinitely more powerful. The heroes are an afterthought for him, and it's not so much of a fight as Thanos showing off. In the end, after all the heroes are defeated, he fights each of the cosmic abstracts (Infinity, Eternity, Love/Hate, Order/Chaos) and beats each of them. Then he fights ALL of them at the same time and WINS. It's one of the most incredible displays of power ever depicted in a Marvel comic.
