To this day i catch myself singing this song. SUPREME CLASSIC.
Thanks to you and Paul for posting this extended version, because I've always loved this song. I didn't know that the Supremes had performed it on T.V., so thanks for including that video portion. I had the good fortune of meeting Diana in San Juan P.R. at that time, and got all three of the Supremes to sign the album cover of "More Hits," which of course I still have.
When I found this E/V I was as excited as the French were when Lindbergh landed.......I knew that something wonderful had landed in my, proverbial, backyard. Your musical enhancements are truly a work of 'Supreme' joy and pleasure. Mahalo Nui Loa, My Friend. 👍👍😀

OMG !! This was my favorite song on the ,"More Hits,"album. It was the spring of my junior year of high school and I played this over and over until my folks were ready to slit their own throats. LOL I remember their introducing it on that Ed Sullivan Show. At one point , my mother came into my room and, in frustration , cried out, " again, with this Supremacy !!" Guess what....it didn't stop me from playing it again. I still play it.
Leonard...one thing..."Mother Dear" was never aired on "Ed Sullivan"...but it was aired on Dean Martin and one other show.
I WASN'T A WATCHER OF Dean MArtin so I am pretty sure it was Ed Sullivan. I saw the Dean Martin performance here and that wasn't the one I saw. What I remember most about the performance was that it was way overly dramatic at the end and I had laughed my ass off. I never dreamed I would come to love the song so much
Not to belabor the point, but "Mother Dear" was not performed on "Ed Sullivan". You may not have seen it on the Dean Martin show, but you didn't see it on SUllivan. This list is of what they sang on Sullivan.

Hey, I appreciate an education. I remember seeing them do ,"You Can't hurry Love," on Johnny Carson. Could it be that this is the performance I am remembering and that they came back to do a second number??
I don't know....they are identified as doing "The Happening" and the " Lady Is A Tramp" medley...but not "You Can't Hurry Love" or "Mother Dear" on the TONIGHT show

As much as I appreciate your extended version of “mother dear,” the best version was the Supremes’ performance on the Dean Martin show. And of course you have some of that video in this video. But their singing was just fantastic (you could hear Flo and Mary loud and clear) and the Dean Martin orchestra was just belting it out as well.
Thank you for the photo at 2:50 and the photo at 3:04. They were so young and so talented. The Supremes were a prime example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

How does Diana accomplish this, you wanna get up and dance and you wanna cry at the same time because you can 4:02 feel her hurt and pain as cry’s for help from mother dear. Mother Dear, Standing at the Crossroads of Love, Love Child and Living in Shame are tear breakers. Diana can make you cry more quickly than the other gifted female coroners of her genre.
Have always loved this song - but I recommend avoiding the alternate version like the plague! You do not mess with a masterpiece! Diana Ross & The Supremes had some great 'b" sides and album cuts that, to this day, stand on their own - "He's All I've Got", "Everything Is Good About You", "It's All Your Fault", "There's No Stopping Us Now", "Put Yourself In My Place", etc. Too bad Diana doesn't include these songs in her live shows!
Knock off the "Diane Ross" revisionist history............these are THE SUPREMES!!! "Diana Ross and The Supremes" never recorded ANY of those songs..............they were all recorded by THE SUPREMES. How could Diane possibly sing any of those songs at her oldies concerts? Mary and Flo are both deceased and Diane's voice is deteriorated. Get the facts straight and get real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's got the Motown sound we loved back in the day but the melody and hook aren't as strong as on other of the group's singles. The "repeat factor" of HDH's stellar style first became apparent on "Nothing But Heartaches" (which I bought as a kid, but it charted lower than their previous singles). I don't remember this track although I probably had the album it was on. It is not bad, it is just "too much of a good thing" and a noble effort. Not every track by HDH was equal to the delights of "Baby Love" or "Where Did Our Love Go", etc. Love hearing it nevertheless. The Supremes tracks I felt should've charted better were "Forever Came Today" (majestic!) and "Let Me Go the Right Way", which was criminally under-rated and a really fun record.
As usual, spot on and this really enhances the original! Glad you went for wha ti think is the first (released) version and not the third version of it which to me just sounds wrong.

This should have been a Number One hit...instead, it got shelved because Berry Gordy didn't think it was good enough. At one time, he stated they would not accept anything but #1 hits for The Supremes. Really??
I guess he didn't think HDH was good enough either...he let them walk away over contract disputes. Motown was never the same....

Diana always worked the hardest, stayed longer than the other girls, practiced her steps until they were second nature to her, she was a boss before the term had even been invented!! She was like a sponge…she soaked EVERYTHING up because she wanted to succeed and even more wanted to be the BEST, and damn it she WAS!!!! She has never veered off her course, and has let nobody or nothing distract her from-her dreams/ hopes/ goals and ambitions, and i personally give her ALL the credit she totally and absolutely deserves!! I love Diana with every fibre of my being!! For REAL!!!! 🥰🌟🧡
