    These are super cool, super fun, career path fashion jobs where you work in the industry, inside a fashion brand.
    I’ll also share a couple really good reasons these unknown jobs are better than being a designer.

    ABOUT SEW HEIDI
    Heya! Nice to meet you, I’m Heidi. I teach fashion designers like you the real world skills you actually need to learn to succeed in this cutthroat industry.
    (You know, all the stuff you don’t learn at fashion school.)
    I’ve worked as a contract designer for over a decade and run SuccessfulFashionDesigner.com. I’ve been able to make a healthy living doing work I love in fashion.
    But I got started just like you, one step at a time. It began with some embarrassing hand sewn dresses and fashion sketches that would make a 3-year-old’s artwork look like a masterpiece.
    Then, things changed. I learned how design was done on a large scale. I learned how to get things into production. And I learned all the skills I wish I knew when I was first starting out.
    Now, I dedicate most of my time teaching you all of that. This content is hard to find anywhere else (because in fashion, people keep secrets), so I decided to create it...and give most of it away for free.

    Thank you Heidi!
    I graduated from FIT with Fashion & Graphic Design degrees. I also majored in Surface Design. I didn't want a fashion design job because it started out at $25k & I have children. I became a CAD/Textile Designer & started at $65k. Best decision ever. I still get to draw & design pretty things & go to the shows. I love it!

    Hey world! Design is really not sexy or glamorous. It’s a TON of work and pretty thankless. I did CAD for a while and I truly prefer it to bring a designer. I just listen to music, TH-cam videos or Netflix shows (either splitting the screen or using two monitors or watching ie. listening to videos) and working, the day flies by and I made a really good salary as a CAD artist.

    When I finished fashion school (2016), I looked into the different fashion jobs, simply because EVERYONE wants to do design and I don't want to design for a brand that's not my own. CAD designer, technical designer, product designer are my top options.
    I used to do CAD for freelance and I'm going back to doing that soon.
    After business school, I'm MOST likely going back to fashion school, for technical design since I really want to and need to understand the technical aspect of fashion.

I have no interest in doing a office job endless it has something to do design :) I know that I’m probably talking way over my head but I know I want to work in fashion. I used to dream about working with fashion shows I New York, things like that. Anyways I would really appreciate it if u have any feed back on what I could get a head start in researching or what I should look at for volunteering or job ideas to think about. ☺️

I have a degree in journalism, but currently work as a graphic designer for a small local company that does custom dye-sublimated webbing for all sorts of applications. My pay is terrible and I want to get a better-paying job elsewhere, but feel like my skills not directly related to this job have atrophied. CAD Designer, as you described here, sounds like it uses a lot of the same skills I use in my current job, which is a form of surface design, so I'm going to look more into the possibilities there. Thanks again!

    Hi Sew Heidi, I’m currently studying Fashion Design. I had a whole other career in my twenties but am going back to school in my 30s because I’ve always wanted to do something more creative. I’m taking a Fashion focused Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator class right now and I could see myself doing this as a job. Here are some questions I had for you: to be a CAD designer do I need hand drawing skills? Can I intern for a CAD designer? Are CAD designers freelance or full time jobs? Do I need to learn InDesign? How do I get a CAD designing job (for example, can I just make a portfolio of my work rather than getting a degree in Fashion Design)? Thank you! I appreciate your videos and guidance.

    Love this video, short and to the point and very informative! I'm interested in pursuing either the CAD designer or Technical Designer roles. I have no formal fashion training but have been sewing for myself and my kids from store bought patterns for over 25 years, so the basic knowledge is there. I have a tech background and have and know adobe software. I'm not looking to be a designer(so I don't know if that eliminates the CAD job option), but would love, love, love, to do the other technical stuff. My question is, how do I get into this industry, where do I get the training? Who do I contact, are there apprenticeships in which to learn? Any suggestions from those of you already doing this would be very appreciated!

  • @jrberry63
    @jrberry63 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    CAD and Tech Designer are my top picks. Actually, Textile Design is the dream job, but all three are so close I'd really be happy doing any of them.
    My BFA is in Graphic Design. I did work in that industry for some years, but I'm more of a technical type so I wound up in prepress and print production. That was fine, but I LOVE textiles and I am not fond of advertising materials. I already sew, weave, knit, crochet, quilt, and dye yarn and fabric, and am currently studying Fashion Merchandising and Product Development and taking Tech Design and a Computers for Apparel class and LOVING IT. L-O-V-I-N-G it.
    You're right, it IS the perfect blend of fashion and graphic design. I have 25+ years of very in-depth experience with Adobe products (Illustrator, Photoshop) largely due to working in prepress, and the skills have transferred so seamlessly into the Tech Design-related courses that I can't believe it took me this long to find out this career path even exists. So all I really need is to finish this degree (which will be within 18 months at the latest), have a bang-up portfolio, and go out and land that job.
    I also think that working "behind the scenes" is probably a better fit for someone a tad older. I'm not 25 anymore, LOL. I can't compete with the 20-something fashion designers. And that's OK! I really LOVE playing with Illustrator, drawing flats and floats, making textile patterns, applying them to the flats/floats, playing with position... I'm also an Excel guru so Tech Designer and tracking all the spec sheets and POMs is right up my alley.

    in asia..almost 1 person usually does those 6-7 job mention. And it's almost a must requirement for a fashion designer /merchandiser job,that you know from designing the clothes,drawing illustrating, A.I , graphics/ cad,knows about technical pattern making (even you don't know much abt sewing) . Merchandising , budgeting, look for vendor \factory. Negotiate pricing, sourcing ,chasing the shipment date, q.c . Allocation of stock to shops. Visual and some times sales.Only done by 1 person . And if you are a senior designer, you have to forecast the next year trends ,colors and seasons collection directions.And they paid quite low.

    • @SewHeidi
      @SewHeidi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Each of the job roles can depend on the size of the company - at smaller companies you will have more responsibilities. And in general, you are worked really hard in the fashion industry since it is so competitive, meaning you will be required to wear a lot of hats! I suggest only going into this career if you *really* love it and want to work hard :)

    • @rebakekka
      @rebakekka 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have worked at small brands in addition to large chain store brands in the US and never had a separate CAD designer. These days you are lucky to have an assistant. You’re expected to do your own tech work as well. The industry is moving toward consolidating roles. ESPECIALLY in a tough market. And the more investment conglomerates buy up brands with no understanding of how things work, the more they expect designers to do it all themselves.

I'm always running back and forth btwn factories, cutting rooms and pattern graders (im in NYC'S Garment district) which can be tiresome but time flies and deadlines wait for noone...but it's fun nonetheless. Being an assistant and as a part timer, i get paid okay. About ~30 - 35k. On the side im also going to school for nutrition (true rooted passion)... but im at that cross roads on which i should continue with. Both are rewarding.

A job in fashion would be a dream come true for me. So is there any career for me as a computer graduate ? Like Let's say animation design, filming and video, graphic design.. I mean it can be anything on design..

    Hello! I've been wanting to work in the fashion industry, but never had the slightest thought of being a fashion designer. so i'm really thankful for this video. this video really helped me to choose which career i want to pursue. But, does every country have these career on every fashion company? or should i move to another country like china, america, and other countries where the big brand HQ lies?

    So I’m in year 9 and we have to decided what gces we want to take I really want to work in fashion as it’s something I really enjoy yet at the same time I quite like the idea of being a makeup artist but also enjoy decorating like for example planning the design of a place or event like winter wonderland I know that those 3 things are so different and don’t really fit together I was wondering if there was a job that kinda fit that all or if it would be possible to have like a career in fashion/makeup and do decorating/planning on the side

      If you're interested in both fashion and makeup maybe look into Editorial Makeup Artists. Although your job will consist of makeup, you'll have the chance to work with the designer and collaborate on what type of look to create for a runway/magazine/photoshoots

    I am a product developer and I am very boring because I am a more creative type. Although creativity may be applied to problem solving, I prefer using my creativity in choosing or developing artwork, deciding on fabrics or in styles. It is a great responsability and it is way hard work. If you are in the right company and developing the right product, it could be really great fun. Classic and casual menswear developing is such a pain.... oh well maybe it was just a bad day!

    Apparently she doesn't know who you real front person really is. Its us in Production were the ones that actually make sure everything gets done. And us Production Manages deal with all the product development and sourcing.
    A lot of companies don't use product developers and Sourcing specialists because us production managers do it. Production is the most stressful.

    • @SewHeidi
      @SewHeidi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts Denise, and while that can be the set up at some places, many companies do use product developers. There are many variables (company size, etc) and there are a hundred ways to organize a team. A title is just a title -- it's really the workload that defines the role 😉

    • @denisewhite11385
      @denisewhite11385 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I work for a pretty big company.
      We do private and licensed brands and my work load is hectic. We use have product developers, product managers and tech designers but some how my production coordinators and assistants ended up with the work load. But production we bring things to live and many don't know.
