It's come a long way! I really feel like this could be the project I see to the finish line (trying not to jinx it!)
As we are already hitting June, I thought I'd create an overall update video for the progress so far for my solo indie dev project! I rambled a bit in the video, but I think talking about the project and where I want it to go has given me a fresh perspective on the project!

it’s been 6 months??? 😮 I love how much progress you have made 😊 Most of the information inside this video gives me a lot of answers to my questions, and really sums up everything so far. For some of YOUR questions, I have some suggestions and funny things I noticed during the video.
Enemy and Weapon Design : Out of A, B, and C, I think that most of them are good but B fits it the most. (i don’t know if it’s cuz A and C have no colours 😂) A is like a strange, sharp-teeth animal and C is like a rabbit with a visor and no legs 😅??? But, I think B fits because of how it moves and contorts its arms (that are holding the flower). It looks like a nice guy though 😂😂😂, but A looks the most evil. Maybe with colours, effects and fitting animations, I can see all of them added! 😊 (so far they all look really kind and won’t eat Obakenori except A 😂😂😂) For other enemies apart from ABC, perhaps there could be like monsters that fit the terrain? Like, an Evil Flower Chomping thing or a Poisonos Flower (plant related things in the forest) or maybe Rock Worms or Golems in the rocky areas? Perhaps, since Obakenori is a demon king (or was it like a powerful demon, not the king but is fighting to become a king after i got banished and turned into a Onigiri 🧐). The way the attack you is the bite, scratch, hit with a weapon, or shoot Obakenori (depending on which enemy they are). They will deal different amounts of HP, or maybe you die in ONE hit? I see smaller enemies dying in one attack, but I don’t see Obakenori dead in one. Can I crush an Onigiri by getting my cat to step on it 😂😂😂? Maybe for…
Boss Fights 😡🛡️🔥🐺: there could be OTHER demons that were Obakenori’s enemies/friends being controlled as a boss? Isnt Obakenori ‘Cursed Demon of The Sea’, so maybe the other demons (as they prob exist in the Obakenori verse) or maybe some gods try KILL Obakenori for his power, or just hate him 😂, or maybe STOP him from reaching his true form. He mechanics could be you use your Melee attack, or the Riceable Sushi Thrower, to hit weak points of the beast (when it puts it like shield down or something) then finish it. It could be like a BIG one and Obakenori is on an arena (based on what the demon is based on, it could be in different maps like the ocean or a mountain cave) which breaks. Or, it could be the same size as Obakenori, which has different attacks based on it. I don’t know if a small demon would be fun, because most of them would be very power = very big??? 🧐💪. The way BOSSFIGHTS could work is maybe that -to keep the PLATFORMER idea- you do an Obby while the boss attacks you. There are traps aswell! I don’t know, search up ‘Super Mario Boss fight’ or ‘Spyro Boss Fight’, as you are inspired by them! Anyways, to win these fights, you need to use your….
Weapons 🛡️ 🗡️ 🔫🍣🍙: you talked about like a melee and a ranged weapon, and maybe other weapons that are rewarded. How they could work -and how they work while fighting enemies- is that you press a button to hit them 😡. You also talked about a Death System 💀 and Enemies 🐺, so when you are hit your health goes down or u dead instantly. Other weapons, or ABILITIES could work! Maybe Chop Sticks (wouldn’t that be an enemy from the chef?), or ABILITIES you get from the BOSSFIGHTS could be an attack! Like Avatar the Last Airbender! Depending on which Demon you kill, you get that power (Obakenori is a demon of the sea, I think because the title was that, so like demon of the earth could let you use rocks????). I don’t know, I think 2 attacks are perfectly fine😊. You know what’s not fine? 😡 LAG! Lag from…
The Riceable System 🍚: I LOVE THIS SYSTEM ❤❤❤!It is very cute 😊, and matches the style perfectly for Obakenori’s aesthetic. It is a very original and creative idea, and it looks rlly cool exploding things into rice 😂😂😂. To make good usage of it, perhaps during bossfights you can shoot the floor below the enemy to deal damage? ‘Hidden rice doors’ is the name being called for this system 😂. A death animation could be your exploding into rice, with a very BIG, red text saying GAME OVER. To die, as mentioned before in the Enemy category, there could be obstacles, like SWINGING AXES,maybe TRAPS when you go into a boss fight’s arena CASTLE/DUNGEON? This means you could add a HP bar? Something that really intrigues me is…
THE CHEF 🧑🍳 👨🍳 🥖 🧽: who is the chef? You didn’t mention any LORE about him in past Deblogs….I really wonder what he could be like. (or she?) I’m sure you have the LORE planned and the story of him, but it’s time for a theory…AN OBAKENORI THEORY!!! 😂😂😂 So, counting that Obakenori was a ruthless (Is he evil? He looks always angry 😂😡) demon before he was banished to an Onigiri by a being of higher power -final boss fight?- , he must have done something BAD! Which is why I wonder, why does he have a chef who gives him quests? What will the quests BE? Is it like a Sukuna and Uraume (JJK reference) relation? I think that the Chef, a main character, could be one of Obakenori’s servants from when he was the Demon of The Sea and full power. He is helping Obakenori to defeat the demons, get power, and work together to beat the final boss. It’s weird having a HUMAN as a partner though…(I would instantly eat Obakenori on accident😂😂😂) betrayal incoming??? 👨🍳😈🔫🍙💀. If Obakenori IS evil, why would he spare a human when he was a demon? Is that why he was banished to become an Onigiri? Hmmmm. Well, it’s just a theory…an OBAKENORI THEORY!!!😂😂😂
In conclusion, the progress you have made in six months is great! You have many followers who are excited to see and play the game, you said player feedback would be very important! Also, don’t be uncomfortable about your voice. I think it is very good, and you do not have to be worried about what other people think about it! We think more about ‘This game is cool!😎’ and ‘This guy is cool!👌’ rather than ‘This guy is not cool because his voice 😡’. If people DONT like your voice, ignore them! Good is always better than prevailing and giving up to the bad, don’t listen to them and listen to yourself!😊😊😊

I think B is the stand out choice, but you're right, maybe I should texture and animation the others to get a real idea of the best one! More enemies will be coming soon (sneak peak in the Discord!) and I have some ideas for more that I'm keeping under wraps for now :P
There might be a boss fight, and I have a great plan for the story around it... again secret for now!

Condiment that changes your colour and give special abilities (ex: soya sauce = slides , seasoned ginger = speed boost)

I'm sure it will be great! I've have weeks of very slow progress and binge watching all the awesome devlogs on TH-cam, but you just have to ride those sudden waves of motivation when you get them! 😂

I think the shapeshifting idea is a really cool idea! you could have a function where for a certain level you get this powerup that allows you to select certain enviroment aspects or enemies that you can shapeshift into. maybe that combines with different rice colours that give you different elements (the colours could ber obtained from sauce bottles around the map). maybe one of the rice colours could be the shapeshifting power

Hey! Great video, I think it would be nice to change the coin sound or mute it when you have voiceover too, it's a very sharp, jarring sound and is from Unreal engine, so I kept thinking I had build errors every time it came up!

Would be nice if there were a shadow under the player character when jumping. This is useful so you can see exactly where your character is positioned even when in the air.

Hey, I like the idea of the hammer style sushi on a stick at the start at 2:42 and see some cool potential with using it to slam buttons down. Maybe as a timer based button for your button system. Also I think all the enemies look really cool but the first one that takes my focus is enemy A. I feel it matches the style well and can be added with some extra functionality. Also I do see the idea that the shape shifting aspect can be used with hiding amongst enemies like those onigiri mould presses to form them into enemy or tool shapes. Hope the development continues well. :)
also you could make it like the game knack, like the player can build them self up by collecting more rice?

hey man love the game and i think the overall look of the game is great but the text could use a polish and the coins could be spiced up maybe add collectable chopsticks or a chopstick weapon and also your voiceover sounds great man no issues here good luck!

5:26 it would be really awesome to use your rice particle system to be called when your hero dies, similar to KNACK on the PS4 when he dies it split into blocks. Your demonstration looks amazing so far keep it up id definitely play it! And your enemies I'd say use all of them in different biomes but start with C the bunnies.

awsome sauce (i like the big white enemy with the big mouth, it looks like a takeaway-bag), btw i dont think the coin pickup sound fits at all, its to high pitched and doesnt fit the theme, it sounds so digitally, if you know what i mean. Hearing it during the video made me think i was getting notifications or having some sound driver errors. All in all this looks great. Remember to not stress it! your progress seems really good!

I'm really happy to see an indie 3d platformer devlog. I personally think C looks best. I'm working on a 3D platformer as well, so I love to see what other people come up with. I do have one suggestion: The falling platforms look like they need a bit of telegraphing that they're about to fall, maybe by shaking, or doing some sort of crumbling animation.

Hey mind if i ask how you did the edge highlights on the models? Looks super pretty are those textured in or is that a material shader?
Any highlights are from subsurface scattering, not using any special shaders in them 💪🍙

Very nice and cute concept, there’s one thing you can do is. Instead of ancient or nature environments. Why don’t you create environment related to that sushi. Like a shop,kitchen, restaurant, food market. Etc. ❤ so that it will be more relevant and have connections. But keep it up , you are doing great 👍🏻 best luck 🍀 😊

Hi, I'm 9 months deep and just started showing/play testing my demo. Your game looks very nice. I just want to say how many little things you can pick up on by play testing in person. I got invited to show my game at a developer conference and there was literally one complaint, that almost everyone had (mouse sensitivity) but I was able to pickup on several other things that people didn't say to improve on.
Online however you're like to get a bunch of useless feedback (along with the good) that might give you the wrong impressions. I saw someone complain a couple of days Ago about spiders in a game (not mine) because "arachnophobia in the gaming community is real", and a different game "I don't like heights in games"😅.
You can see in someone's eyes and hear in their voice how much fun they're actually having. People online will say every stupid thing that pops in their head.✌️

what if your main character is a nigiri and the more dmg you take the more of the salmon on top of your head gets eaten off. And if you are just rice, the next hit kills you?
