- Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for the fifth time this year. It was Jaishankar's first visit to Moscow since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
Jaishankar has stressed that his country would continue buying oil from Russia. India has become Russia's largest oil customer after China as Western buyers seek to wean themselves off fuel from Moscow.
"As the third largest consumer of oil and gas and a country with not very high incomes, we have to look for affordable sources, so the India-Russia relationship is to our advantage," Jaishankar said.
Russia's share of India's oil imports has surged from around 2% before the invasion of Ukraine to an all-time high of 23% in September.
For decades, India has relied on Russia for its military equipment. Russia is also the fourth-biggest market for Indian pharmaceutical products.
India has close ties to both Moscow and the West and is one of the few countries not to have condemned Russia's war in Ukraine. New Delhi also does not support Western sanctions against Russia and instead favors dialogue as a way to resolve conflict.

Actually, it is very complicated. They're trying to maintain friendships with Russia and the West (who are currently in a very heated situation) and relying on these friendships to control Chinese influence while both the West and Russia have a complicated relationship with China... this isn't straightforward. It's multifaceted with many moving parts.

I'd say the complications are more from Russias decision to pledge India into its side for World War 3 and the economic divide in the free market. Everything will be simple, until Russia instigates a global draft and 10m Indians are rushed out without their equipment whike Russia only pulls together 1.5m of its own with China only yanking 3m

I have seen S Jaishankar's original statement. The news piece has edited his explanation to make it look negative at start of video.
He also mentioned the third largest consumer of oil with the lowest per capita income couldn't afford to pay such a high price.
I understand the importance of controlling the narrative by media to end the war quickly. However, it also is essential to follow a word-centric view in contrast to Europe centric view by the German public, state-owned broadcaster.
It is not "consumer convenience". Inflation due to raising oil price would mean malnutrition in children, a chunk of people falling into poverty and not able to afford basic needs, and in the worst case, death. It is a hard decision to make for sure.
I agree that India need to raise its voice higher towards ending the war.

Never put all your eggs in one basket, that's what India is trying to do. We actually need rapid growth and developmemt to become economic giant, so we are trying to keep intersets of our country at higher vantage point than any moral standing.
Why would you want to become an "economic giant"? Surely the corruption and greed of others should be an example? I've visited India on numerous occasions and the humility and beautiful reception I have received from genuine Indian people is something you ought to be proud of. India is already a great country, and a country that has every right to be proud.
See how many friends you get with that attitude. Good people support other good people, which gives them an advantage over others. Support bad people, and you will probably end up like the west who now realize we should not have supported Russia with buying oil through all those years. We are a country of 1.4 billion some of whom are extremely poor and most of whom escaped poverty just in the last one generation. If europe has to pay double price for gas maybe that means you have to end up breaking a deposit made from the inheritance you received when grandpa(ex colonial officer in asia) died. For us that will mean being thrown back to poverty and hunger and possibly death. So our priorities are clear. Kudos to you for standing up for ukraine. Unfortunately it is a luxury we can't afford.
