    This is funny to me because I totally fell in love with studio one 2 years ago and I have no complaints whatsoever about it so it’s interesting to see your point or view!

      Maybe it’s because you work completely in the box. I do use studio one for 4 years, an have no problems at all.

      He didn’t explain why he doesn’t like it at all. Studio one has macros aka custom actions. He seems like more of a tinkerer than a music producer or serious mixer.

    Reaper is just in a league of its own. Can manage 50 plugins in realtime and the competition can handle 5.

  • @soulsweet40

    The great thing about Reaper is that the Reaper community contributes new plugins, scripts etc....and improve on it when other DAW's have the same programmers without much outside influence

    • @xaosnox
      @xaosnox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, DJ Drake sums it up. But the whole thing is like a bug with bugs on it. It always shocks me when people say they love Studio One, but some people love to be tied up and whipped. There's a lid for every pot, as they say. I'm keeping Studio One as far away from my pot as possible! I can't think of a worse DAW, to be honest. No offense to the people who love it intended. I just think they haven't given REAPER a fair shot.

      No bugs here @@xaosnox - didn't like Reaper after S1 - seemed clunky - but there you go.

      @DELTAdarke 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      All I'm saying is I like studio one 4 personally, works for me and my setup with minimal bugs (they're still there though). Reaper is similarly awesome but for my personal workflow and setup I haven't found out a way to get it as efficient. It's about what works for you and what you personally like. If it gets the job done it gets the job done. We all have the same goal here

    • @matt_canon
      @matt_canon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's the best (for me) when it comes to post-production, when I used either Ableton or Logic to do all of the creative/midi; and have everything stemmed out and imported into S1 as audio. A faderport 16 really makes it handy. However...
      Shortcomings:
      Studio One sometimes has random/ unpredictable bugs with a number of 3rd party plugins, sometimes causing crashes or indefinite beachballs for something that wouldn't be CPU intensive in any way. -- It used to have bugs where certain synths like Spire and a few others would reset themselves to their initialized settings upon opening a saved project. -- For the most part, that seems to have been rectified, but it still happens on occasion.
      What it still needs (at least, what I need it to have), is a viable on/off Freeze function. All they need to do is copy the one in Logic Pro, where it freezes all of the channels simultaneously. Still allowing for volume and pan automation. -- "Transform to Audio (with instrument settings preserved)" is not even close to the same thing.
      If all those were rectified, (along with every last yet to be stumbled upon random-crash bug)...I might consider it one of the best. -- The absolute best is depends on the end user, and their level of mastery with one over the rest.

    • @benreavesmusic
      @benreavesmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. The developers are the only ones in the industry besides Cuckos that actually listen to users, and going forward, I can’t see it not becoming at least as technically capable as Reaper. Lots of the things he mentioned about routing and playlists in Ardour already exist in S1, they’re just not advertised. I honestly don’t know why people still look at S1 as a toy.

    3:55 macOS is actually based on a Un*x-flavour (FreeBSD with a modified kernel, called Mach). Because of this they share a lot of commonalities with Linux and other Posix compliant systems. Anyway... the other possible DAW that exists for Linux is Bitwig (or Renoise, but that is more like a tracker [which I love]).

    I just left protools after 12 years for studio one. I’ll always have a version of protools but tbh after one week with 4.5 I’m already finding it easier to operate for me. As a relative newcomer to the DAW market, as the guy said, give studio one 2 or 3 more years and it will be insane. I guess they are learning too and the great thing about these guys is they listen to their customers. I find Protools to just about the big guys and the smaller bedroom/home/small commercial studios just getting boxed in and priced out.

    This needs a 2019 update! Logic Pro X is my main DAW but I recently added Studio One 4.5 to my arsenal and it is MUCH more than what you give credit for. The Sampler alone is one of the best ive ever used. The mastering plugins are very efficient and powerful. In fact, as it stands right now, The one two punch of LPX and ST1 4.5 is a match made in heaven! They compliment each other very well! Personally, ive had it with Avid! I noticed many Pro Tools users seem to be jumping to Studio One, in fact, this is why I looked into it! The reviews on the Presonus DAW are steadily positive. It was a little over a year ago when this video was posted and A LOT has changed since then for several DAWs… It would be nice to see an up to date retake of this topic. How much longer can Pro Tools hold onto a title they no longer live up too! Logic Pro X is now the most powerful DAW in the industry by a mile with the 10.4.5 update.

    Im Guessing Cubase is not on this list due to a demo not being available. Which is unfortunate. As someone who has also made this journey and left protools to try everything else for a better option. Cubase kills. We have similar work flows. If you know someone you can borrow a dongle from to try it. Do it. Your journey would come to an abrupt end. With that being said Reaper is outrageously amazing for the price point.
    Love you vids. Cheers!

      I have been using Studio One since version 2 and still have it on my main DAW in my commercial studio. 4.5 is a disaster for me. They took away the highlight feature for grouped tracks in in the Track View (not on the timeline) and now the Input Level on the tracks disappears when the track is in record mode..unless you have the monitor on and then the monitor function only comes down the outputs. And the fonts have gotten so small that one my large desktops systems its annoying, but on the mobile rig that is laptrop driven its next to impossible to read. Terrible update. Looks like Presonus is now catering more to the beat makers than the serious recording studios.

      Just get REAPER. There's no point in messing with anything else unless you're doing film scoring. Then you may consider DP, but REAPER is still better. The other DAWs are all playing catch up with REAPER now, but they never will because of the way it's designed. They can fix things and add new features so quickly because it has a great foundation. Kind of like Mac OS X before they got rid of Scott Forstall and put Jonny Ives in charge of it. Now, it's a sad, ugly thing called macOS, and, instead of setting the trends for style and design, they are following them and very poorly.

      Real Music 4 you Without a doubt!

    • @xaosnox
      @xaosnox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@realmusic4you you only hear this kind of stuff from two kids of people: the ones who haven't tried REAPER, and the ones who weren't smart or patient enough to take a few minutes to learn how to make it the custom work horse it is designed to be. It's the only DAW that lets you put everything you need an do at your fingertips and get everything else out of the way. I've been using different DAWs since ProTools was the only one, then Cubase, Cakewalk and Logic came along, but didn't even have version numbers yet. There's nothing like REAPER, not only in the world of DAWs, but in all of software. I've done graphic design, video production and music since the 90s, and I wish there had been a REAPER in all of those fields. I could have tripled my income. You don't learn REAPER so much as you teach it to work for you. It's a complete paradigm shift. Some people just aren't ready to live free.

    Reason is my main DAW always. It just inspires creativity, the synths and FX are fantastic. I also have Studio One 4.5 Bought the full version half a year ago and had Artist for a while. It's a very tidy and clean looking DAW BUT doesn't really inspire too much creativity. I wish they put the browser on the left hand side. The stock FX are pretty nice but the Instruments suck hard, aside from Impact XT. Ableton would be my second choice after Reason. I may purchase Reaper during the next sale, I like the fact that there are different skins now.

    I am not a fan of digital. After 30 years of running an Ampex 24track all analog system, I had to move to digital because of the price of tape. And ONLY because of the price of tape. I am almost a beginner using a computer, and I went with Studio One. But only as a record and play back unit. I still use my analog console, analog compressors, analog equalization. I will use the automation in Studio One during the mix, going through analog mastering to my CD recorder. I am interestesd in only one plugin and will continue to evaluate that so when the time comes to mix I may buy that. Thanks for all your vids! TH-cam, Joe Logsdon & Company

    Know this is old but what DAW did you settle on, or use the most now in 2019? I'm looking to switch from PT(been using it for 20yrs) but I do all Rock music, no midi, no virtual instruments! Reaper literally sounded digitized when my mixes where finished vs PT. Something with the high end sounding brittle. Now most people won't hear this, but I'm all acoustic.. real instruments in my studio so I can really hear the difference. (Harder to tell with virtual instruments imo). Studio One did not work out for me, it was too electronic music based imo. And was hard to use analog hardware as inserts in it for me. Since I'm Windows based was thinking about Cubase. Would like to be able to use VST plugins without using a wrapper as well. Anyway... What are you using now? Logic?

    "Reaper" Also, would actually really enjoy the Studio One "bug report" idea. I've just broken up with Studio One and got together with Reaper and am similarly in awe.... Love your videos - both informative and entertaining, thank you :)

      I just love to see all the people confirming what I've discovered with REAPER. I have to admit, I originally started using it for the price. I had used everything at one point or another, was currently using Logic, but was getting into voice over, and it was too clunky and I was broke because of health issues. When I wrote Cockos and told them that I was intending on using REAPER for charity and explained by situation, they sent me a key! I was blown away. Then, I started to get to know REAPER. And, wow! What an amazing thing it is. I find myself wishing that Cockos would write software for everything now. Browsers, graphic design, word processors, everything. I think that every software developer should have to intern at Cockos before they're allowed to release code for sale. It's not just the best DAW, it's the model that all software should follow.

      Reaper is just hard to learn. If you love to tinker, or have a programmer’s mind, it is perfect. If I enjoyed configuring my DAW as much as I like playing with sound, it would rank higher for me.
      That said, for single source recording and edits for quick turnaround, nothing works faster.

    You needed to check out harrison mixbus which is based on ardour but has analogue mixing circuirtry built in (not as a plugin). It's phenominal.
    Also Bitwig Studio is native linux. Not open source.

    Hallo. Nice similar journey to mine: came from Cubase (fed up with performance, didn't want to upgrade and hated the dongle), tried Studio One (visually the most pleasing DAW ever) but found it to be too limited for me, but decided to keep an eye on future versions. Ended up with REAPER. Stable, fast and very very customizable, which does take some time but will eventually save you lots of time! Goed bezig.

    Not trying to be a dick at all but mac os is BSD not linux. Also, mixbus is based off of ardour so check that out. I personally use mixbus for stem mixing and samplitude for editing.

    Ardour can't work for most people because it doesn't have delay compensation on utility busses, which makes it useless for most of us. I hear there's a git that was released that Harrison Mixbus is incorporating into a future update which does put delay compensation on utility busses, so we're not going to be limited to just the 8 or 12 mix busses that do have PDC.

    Wytze, you were talking about Ardour, and I know that Harrison Mixbus is based on Ardour. I'm using Mixbus 32C now, I'm quite thrilled cause of the easy workflow and the sound of it. I'm also planning to download Reaper as a second DAW to use for mastering. But have you also looked into Mixbus and what are your thougts on that?

    Ex studio one 2 user here....Got tired of the crashes and plugin errors. Moved to Reaper and the only problem have encounter is when working with midi. After 3 midi tracks it starts to get stupid. With audio is amazing...managing plugins and latency is great. My only complain would be ...is way too customizable to the point sometimes gets annoying. But again..very happy with Reaper.

    I used Reaper for about 4 years. Best DAW for the money. That said, Studio One fits my workflow much better. And that's what it really is all about, which DAW works the way you want to work. I'm not saying Studio One is the best, but it is the best for me.

    While at university they made me use Protools because it was suppose to be the best DAW ever, then because of life I had to switch to Cubase, Logic and Adobe Audition, I kind of dig them but weren't that amazin. When I met Reaper it was just the love ending story, REAPER is not a DAW, REAPER IS THE DAW

    Mac OS's background is actually BSD, another open source Unix-Like Operating system. Similar, and a lot of shared userspace for basic/fundamental functionality software, but not QUITE the same. Reaper has a native Linux version, as does the mixed source port of Ardour, Mixbus, that I mentioned in my comment on the first video in this series.

    I think you should try FL Studio. It was made to have the clearest UI and most Functionality. You can patch everything with their Patcher insert and instrument versions. You can also patch the mixer channels. It’s meant to be extremely compatible and easy to use - as digital mixing should be. Plus I know there’s a lot of stock plugins you’ll love. Also has the most advanced but piano roll any daw has ever had.
    Play with the demo and snake oil it please!

    Yes! It's a great journey to try out which DAW is the best for you and your projects.
    I was on the same path few months ago.
    I started with Sony Acid 7 (I mean Sonicfoundry Acid Pro 4 back then) (bummer) then I bought Pro Tools 9 four years ago.
    Then I sold them because the workflow and the bugs (most cases in Acid) was very annoying.
    Out of date features, not compatible with many plugins... etc.
    Sony never gived a f*ck for answering our requests. They sold the whole licence to Magix.
    I tried Cubase, Sonar, and S1.
    In my case the best choice was Studio One.
    I make music in the box, and few times tracking vocals, and guitars, and mastering.
    I found it very stable, and very inspiring, and I have to say, really love the workflow.
    It's fast, everythings is under my hands, drag and drop style which is awesome, the stock plugins are very useable, and it handles the 3rd party vst-s and vsti-s correctly. So I stayed with S1. I really hope Presonus won't give up developing S1.
    Big thumbs up to your channel.
    I wish you the best and keep up the good work!
    Simon B.

    I guess we could go down a really endless debate here! I'll just express what i think from my experience: I've been working on pro tools for about 10 years now and after 2 weeks using S1 I've come to the conclusion that it is far more stable, responsive and easy to use (maybe a bit too much). There's a bunch of features I do dislike (or miss from PT) but overall I'm objectively enjoying it. I would have to give S1 a try on some professional film post production for features/docs/shorts (wonder if any of you guys out there have) which is my main field of work were I do feel comfortable inside PT and have managed to handle and finish some big projects in the past (Timecode, framerates, sync, codecs, surround layouts,etc) Other than that, for music mixing, tracking and mastering S1 has been a pretty enjoyable & productive time.

    If Reaper had the Studio One Appearance i think there would be no contest; I've used both but kept Reaper even though it doesn't look as sexy. But I can fix that. In comparison, Studio One is how many times more expensive than reaper, even Reaper commercial and yet - and yet, Reaper kicks it's ass! Even from the trial version - which is complete with NO restrictions, I must say I only miss Studio One's VST library the most that was awesome for an in-house set up; apart from that no crashes now, before with Studio One it was like being with a drunk on the highway.

    Your experience is similar to mine. I was initially overwhelmed with Reaper and I flirted with Studio One for several months. However, I quickly ran into limitations, bugs, and uncomfortable workflows.
    I returned to Reaper and took the time to customize the DAW to how I work. Reaper also has features S1 lacks. I love Reaper.
    I came from Cakewalk Sonar.

  • @jlx_music4365

    I really hate to say this, but it really makes no difference for the output of your music making which DAW you use. If you know your DAW well, you can make good results everywhere, where you are trained in better! If every "hit-song" would be made only in one DAW, then I would make a difference, but it's not the case. Every DAW has pros and cons, you just need to know yourself how to make the best out of it!

    When you say pro tools, do you mean the HD with the dsp cards or the native? And have you tested the difference between the DSP with pro tools and without DSP ?? I did a test a few years back when running pt 7 with and without dsp and the difference was huge.

    Only just watching this in May - would love to see what you think of Studio One 4.5. They seem to be working hard towards gaining the Pro Tools community. Coming from Reason 10 as my first DAW, Studio One complements it and expands what I can do, and I love the workflow so far.

    Have you ever considered Tracktion Waveform? I tried the free older version recently, and was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it, coming from Studio One. Tempo curves, full wire-based routing of plugins, a chord track system, and a few other features really caught my attention.
