I am not just being nice! You demo a Metal pedal better than anyone. When buying any dirt pedal one needs to hear a few chords in the style played at a medium tempo. Often Metal players show off their shredding and speed. One ends up having no idea what the tone of the pedal is. Zero!!! Your idea of a Metal pedal comparison is brilliant. I for one will steer my Metal guys over to it. I have hundreds.
Mostly, fir a *demo* it needs to be played through the full range if settings. Most people 'demo' stuff, by tweaking out a sound they like and banging on it.
I own the overdrive. It's pretty bad... You can get it to sound sorta half-decent if you play around with the knobs for a bit, but ultimately it's just a whole lot of noise and not a lot of actual tone. Not to mention that the static when it's idle is absolutely insane.
Recently, I dropped a line on Behringer's TH-cam channel stating that IMHO, 60 Cycle Hum gives the world's most honest non-biased pedal reviews. Hopefully they will sponsor a review of some of their products.
@@hydroman99 Right? I'm tired of reviewers just cranking all the knobs and shredding, then judging how good a pedal is by whether it can djent or not. Ryan is actually thorough with each pedal and goes throw all the tones they offer; it's much appreciated.

Those are reworked MetalZones that go from 11 to 20 :P They sound bad for most people at first, because there is just too much gain and they are a bit vintagy voiced to contradict that, but you can make them sound good with just what and how you play.

Awesome it makes no noise whatsoever only if you turn the treble pass a certain point Which I basically turn it off unless as it’s extremely trebly pedal anyway
This is a great thing to see pop up. I've been following the Afford-A-Board series because I'm trying to build my first one. Been playing over 20 years, but I've always just used what I can get from the amp. Which probably makes me an underachiever. When I had tried to use pedals, I was going from guitar into the pedals and then into the amp. There was no rhyme or reason for anything being set up as it was, and predictably, it was the shittest sound ever. For the longest time, I hated on the tube screamer pedal becuase I had no idea what it was trying to replicate or how to use it. I was basically being the guy who thought his strat was crap becuase of the 60 cycle hum. Why this is really interesting is because I still have a Danelectro Daddy-O pedal that I want to not hate, but I totally hate. I have to be doing something wrong. Any thoughts on the Daddy-O?
I have all the 8 pedal of this line. The Metal is the winner. The (slap) Echo is charmming, and the 600ms Delay is useful too. The chorus and flanger are a bit weak. But they are cute and kind of collectible.
The fab metal, along with the chorus were my two first pedals, when the battery goes a bit in the metal, you start to get sub octave harmonics in places.

Behringers are not too much more expensive than these....... When conveniant, maybe review the more popular Fuzz(orange), Tube Amp Modeler OD(blue), Vintage Tube(green), etc
I picked up a fab flange back in 2011, 2012, somewhere around there. The enclosure is trash, switch failed within a year, and I'm pretty gentle on my gear. I removed it's guts and re-housed it in a proper all metal enclosure with a much more durable footswitch, and while I was at it, tapped into the circuit and made a couple of fun mods to it. 8-9 years later, still works like a charm. I'd imagine they're all similar to most super affordable pedals these days, okay circuits in garbage enclosures.
Ryan you hit the nail on the head if you are a young beginner with no money the fuzz, and the metal pedal would be perfect for a cheapy bedroom pedal board. Heck man I'm 54 and I'm thinking about the metal pedal as I don't use pedals, and only play at home. You made that pedal look like to much fun.
Josh Scott did a dive into the FAB Overdrive, and it's based on the super rare VestaFire Overdrive, mainly the super rare Nadine's Overdrive, which was built for Nadine's by VestaFire.

Metal - DOD Grunge (reworked Metalzone) without bass control, Overdrive - based on TS9 without tone bleed so you need to adjust it along the gain, it is a bit boring but functional, Fuzz - no idea, but on my gear it was more in dirty overdrive range and I like it for that. I have Fuzz, Distortion and Echo. Distortion I think had circuit similar to Maxon DS830 (Vox v830 seems similar too, and you can find the general idea behind the circuit in some DOD), it sounds ok, but bit generic and has narrow range of sound. Echo is just generic pt2399 you can add time pot to. What I dont like about whole series is that the buffer cuts out a bit too much and you cant feel/tell the settings unless you look in closely in good light. But there is nothing wrong with the sound, good starter effects, used they are dirt cheap, saw them going for as little as 3.5usd. I actually would like that Fuzz in a Cool Cat format (Cool Cat Fuzz and Fuzz v2 are completely different).
That are not the worst pedals ever, I use a danelctro plastic compress pedal that sounds better than my boss cs3 and I just use that plastic dano compress into my peavey 5150 combo and it is glorious!
The best affordaboard pedals from Danelectro are the "Food Series ". They are no longer available, but if you can get your hands on some of them, they are great. Granted, they will cost you more for their respective Fab series counterparts but worth it in my book. I own 6 Food Series pedals. Thanks love your show.
I agree, but also a warning, food ones are often very specific sounding - they are no go for people who want just a generic versatile overdrive or distortion. Grilled Cheese Distortion is a good example of that, but I do like it a lot - th-cam.com/video/l_Bh5YA1Qs8/w-d-xo.html (you need a certain output to get that sound)
I have a couple fab pedals, but I really like the Cool Cat Line! I think a lot of what people say they like is like the "in" thing thing is for the Guitar nuts. Like the shade tree mechanic that owns a 35q0 truck engine he pulled out of a wreck and no matter what it's got he'll tell you it has Fuelie heads.
Don't have the Fab metal...or any metal pedals... But I do have the Fuzz and the overdrive. I really can't do anything with the Fab overdrive...I might just mod it in the future. The Fab fuzz isn't so bad when you roll off the volume on the guitar and clean up the signal a little bit. But it still rates higher than the DOD Flashback Fuzz...which I'm currently saving in case I need a blunt object.
Hey, Ryan FYI, There's a used Line 6 DL4 Delay pedal for sale at Music Go Round in Natick Ma that looks to be in excellent condition. They're asking $149.99 plus $15.00 shipping. You may be able to make an offer on it.
I for one don't mind going out and buy a Behringer peddle do to the quality is a known thing. In that they are something cheap that you can go out and get to get something in the ball park with the sound you want while saving up to get the exact pedal you want. With FAB pedals by Danelectro. I always get that confuse feeling, in that little blond girl that is all strapped up in the back of the car with pink top on kinda thing.
The FAB fuzz is such an interesting circuit. Draws like 300mA and runs with CMOS instead of regular transistors. I just wish it was in a more durable case with higher quality components.
I love the Fab Pedals. My favorites are the Fab Distortion, Fab Metal and the Fab 6ooms Delay. Not fond of the front facing knobs though. And I want that purple guitar.
Some Dano pedals are great (slap echo), some are decent (octave, phazer) and some are garbage (overdrive). I wish they would reissue the old eStudio but update it. I stopped by their booth at NAMM in January and they have no plans for it. :(
The FAB echo, chorus and Distortion are all great in the "cheap but not rubbish" and have a bit of personality. I've got a FAB overdrive and whilst it may not be a "to die for" OD pedal it can be made to sound pretty decent as a low gain slight drive (yes there's million that can do it better but i got mine for£15 new about 15 years ago)
That metal one sounds like a JCM800. I had low hopes going in bc I once had a Fab echo and it sucked SO bad, but the metal and fuzz were both pretty good.
I have the Danelectro French Toast and it’s awesome! Essentially a Foxx Tone Machine that I picked up for $25! My only knock on them is I don’t care for the jacks being on the topside.🎸✌🏻
Anyone taking a crap on Danelectro's FAB pedals doesn't have a clue what they're talking about. I thought the Fuzz and Overdrive pedals sounded amazing, and that Metal pedal sounded like old school Thrash ale Metallica or Overkill to me. I'll definitely be seeking out the Fuzz.
Definitely sounded teenage 1st band when all3 were on. Probably the 1st thing a teen would do is turn everything up full........... It's what did 35 yrs ago. With everything, amps, guitars, pedals, I just called it grunge deth punk thrash...
Jhs did a video on these. They’re actually budget remakes of other classic pedals everyone agrees are good. Seriously go watch the video. I’ve had my FAB Overdrive for a decade now. I love that little bastard.
In order, I liked the Metal, the OD was decent but like you said there are better options for the price, the Fuzz I didn’t like, it sounded more distortion than fuzz.
Started playing at 16 had the dan electro overdrive, I knew nothing about gear but it did overdrive. It then started to shock me when I touched it. Until then it was cool. Definitely buy and play until destroy style pedals
I have the Fab Metal, I quite like it. From your demo I didnt like the the silver OD pedal at all. The fuzz pedal was super fun as well, I dont know if I would pick one up though. thx for demo, great stuff! Edit: I wish I had bought the purple fuzz instead of the Metal, that pedal seems just a bit funner in terms of available sounds.
I used the fab fuzz for a while on bass, my biggest issue with it was the fact the volume knob was either just too loud or too quiet, it was impossible to get the right level!
Sometimes Guitar Center packages like 3 of these Danelectro pedals for the price of $25. Its a hit or miss sometimes in reliabilty though, but for the money, its not much of a loss.
I got the Fab fuzz thinking it was the same as the coolcat fuzz and was sorely mistaken it doesn't sound a thing like the coolcat it's more of like a dirty boost then a fat thick fuzz like the coolcat so I use it as a boost for there french toast octave fuzz that has barely any output so I set the gain low on both and I can get the french toast up to and past unity I also got the Fab 600 Ms delay which is pretty decent for the price thanks for demos on the overdrive and metal pedal I've also owned the pastrami overdrive and the black coffee metal distortion and both of the Fab pedals just sound like recased versions of those not bad but not great
They all sounded kinda rough to me, like they were all working from the same circuit with only minor changes (granted the metal pedal did sound a bit different to the first two) and no way to dial back the basic tone they were all based on. They reminded me of bad built in effects you find on early cheap solid state amps, in fact that's the perfect way to describe them, they sound solid state buzz saw whereas most pedals are trying to sound more natural.
Oh no, he went down the FABbit hole... Seriously, though, I'm surprised at how much fuzz you got out of the fuzz pedal. I ordered one that must have been broken, because all I could get out of it was a soda pop fizzle sound. I had to return it. The overdrive is actually kinda pleasant sounding. The metal pedal, as you can hear, has an overwhelming amount of treble output. It's a chore to get through each song I use it for, and I have the tone backed off as much as I can without ruining the sound. The FAB distortion has a tone to it that's great for neck pup picking, but still too much treble. I don't play any louder than maybe 70 db, but my ears ring after every practice. The treble is just obnoxious. I'm still going to trade up for some Behringers. Same innards as Boss pedals; no point in wasting money just for metal housings. I really like the sound of their pedals. I've never gotten as much sustain out of any other distortion pedals I've tried.
Ryan you need to track down a Fab echo, great slap back and easily modded for a delay knob for longer delay. I've had one on my board for at least a decade.
No use for the other 2 but the metal pedal needs to go on the afordaboard.🤘 When you had all 3 pedals on it seriously sounded like the first band I was in 40 years ago.
Where can I post a photo of the #afordaboard that your channel inspired? I am breadboarding a few different Fuzz circuits to find the one I like and the Kmise Chorus is on order. You are "Making Guitars Great Again". Thanks
hey Ryan, I have noticed all my recent packages smell, and I think the shipping companies are spraying them with something that's supposed to kill the C-virus.. I think.
"it has this interesting static thing going on"
Danelectro - yea, yea.... we meant to do that....
Used A FAB chorus for years when needed for 80s songs in my Wedding and Classic Rock bands....cheep but never failed me.

I got the Fab fuzz thinking it was the same as the coolcat fuzz and was sorely mistaken it doesn't sound a thing like the coolcat it's more of like a dirty boost then a fat thick fuzz like the coolcat so I use it as a boost for there french toast octave fuzz that has barely any output so I set the gain low on both and I can get the french toast up to and past unity I also got the Fab 600 Ms delay which is pretty decent for the price thanks for demos on the overdrive and metal pedal I've also owned the pastrami overdrive and the black coffee metal distortion and both of the Fab pedals just sound like recased versions of those not bad but not great
The OD is supposed to sound real good with a tele bridge pu.
True. I had one that I used a lot with a Tele. I gave it as a birthday gift to a friend of mine (and regret it now hahaha)
That fuzz is already buffered, so not really necessary to put it first, unless it's just your preference.
I have the fab flanger on my board with it maxed out and it sounds so strange and amazing
Check out the Joyo Voodoo Octave Fuzz! For under 40 dollars, I've been able to get some pretty cool sounds out of it.
I've never gotten as much sustain out of any other distortion pedals I've tried.
honestly my favorite pedal is my fab chorus. it’s 20 dollars has that wet chorus sound what else could you ask for
I was thinking the same. And I've had mine on the road from coast to coast for over two decades and its never let me down. Durable as heck.
Their Echo reverb is quite good at slapback.
Ryan you need to track down a Fab echo, great slap back and easily modded for a delay knob for longer delay. I've had one on my board for at least a decade.
Nothing wrong with that fuzz at all.
I owned every one of the dano pedals and alot of them were great talk back spring chicken daddy o the fod ones fuzz was velcro cool
I really liked the metal with the fuzz in front.
Fab chorus isn't terrible I've had mine about 8-9 years. Thought about recasing it with better knobs at some point
For 90% of the guitar community, inexpensive = bad pedal, and expensive = good pedal. Tone of the pedal doesn't matter at all.
It seems the lessons to take away from this is that gear people are stupid and tone is subjective.
No use for the other 2 but the metal pedal needs to go on the afordaboard.🤘
When you had all 3 pedals on it seriously sounded like the first band I was in 40 years ago.

I think.
bought the FAB overdrive in my local music shop as it was cheap as chips and the guy still gave me a discount...
