This has to be the best 12-string playing I've ever heard, tempo changes intermixed with the strongest strumming and then the gentle ending create an image of how strong Heaven can be and still indifferent to the lives of some people. Warren sings and plays from the heart. Simply beautiful.
Ohhhhh...how I miss you Warren....what a masterpiece is this song....had a girl...now she's gone...she left town..the town burnt down...nothing left but the sound of the front door closing forever...amen...
"Genius prose"...... yes! That's what was said of Warren in his biography book, "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead", available at the library system for those of us who can't afford extra luxaries. "Prison Grove" by Zevon is a beautiful example of his ability to write lyrics similar to poetry and set it to music.
KAT Harper, resurrected after my system melted down. Warren sings of the indifference of heaven in this masterpiece of auditory art; but what about the VAST, complacent indifference of the industry to which he contributed so much? Not only was he criminally underrated and underappreciated when alive...shunted around from one corporate kennel to another--"Even A Dog Can Shake Hands"--now he is ignored and neglected in death. Couldn't get WZ into the hall of fame with a flamethrower and a company of Green Berets! Zap up a list of the ones in there. I guarantee you won't know whether to laugh, cry or curse. Is it a joke, a travesty, or an insult? Search me. Probably a great big steaming pile of each! Fine! Don't induct the finest musician/poet/icon to grace rock music. He'd stand out like a gold nugget in a horse's ass anyway! With the exception of a few fellow geniuses, WZ in the hall of fame would only emphasise the bland mediocrity of the rest. Rock the pillars of heaven, Warren! I'll see you soon!
+Brenda Harper It's almost better that he's not included with that crap they inducted. Frank Zappa never got the attention he deserved either, but they inducted him 2 years after his death. Eff em! We know the truth. ;) Got to see Warren live in Minneapolis at First Ave when he was playing Life'll Kill Ya songs 12 months before the album came out. Opened with I was in the house when the house burned down. Incredible show. Miss you Warren!
+MotivatedMetalworks KAT here. Thank you for corroborating my feelings. I guess I just want this irreplaceable man to be honoured in death as he never was in life, except by a fortunate few. I met Warren in the mid-90's, and he generously gave me almost an hour of his time, as we discussed books, life, poetry...when I called good literature "manna for the mind", he grinned that incandescent grin and nodded. I'll never forget that moment of approbation for as long as I live. Warren was kind, and a gentleman, at least to me. He deserved better than he got...and gets.
+Brenda Harper at least there are a few die-hards like you and me out here, keeping his tunes alive, playing his discs at any opportunity, and enjoying every sandwich
+theunwelcome You got that right, friend. I'll quit playing WZ's tunes and singing his praises when I see him again, face to face! Hang in there and keep the faith! Happy Holidays to a fellow die-hard Zevonite!
If there is a true definition of a "perfect song", especially lyrically, this HAS to be it. Pardon me, Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Page/Plant, Waters/Gilmour, Bruce S., on & on, ect,. All due respect, this ( IMO ) stands up against......anything/anyone has done, or ever will. Thanks 4 upload. Much appreciated.
Warren is always best remembered around "Halloween" for "Werewolves of London", a great song. But nothing as profound as this song is. Truly the most gifted song writer in the last quarter of the 20th century. God bless you from "Lyme and Cybelle' to "The Wind". You were awesome.
What a gem Warren was. Such an original, endlessly intelligent sensibility. Hard to believe he's gone. One of a fairly short list of truly worthwhile songwriters. Thanks for posting this.
Fantastic song and fantastic lyrics! I still miss Warren Zevon and all the great music he created. My brother and Warren were born four years apart and died four months apart in 2003. Both in their 50's. Both from cancer. Both, much too young. Both musicians.
Donnie Maxwell Donnie, thanks so much for your kind words. Warren sure did have his finger on the pulse of human emotions. I send you my sympathy on the loss of your two brothers.
This CD "Learning To Flinch"is brilliant.Just Warren.Solo on the piano and guitar.Truly amazing how talented he was.He and Stuart Adamson have never got the recognition they deserved for the great body of work they both created.
Warrens' songs were prophetic. Maybe hung up on darkness and death. But there was a phenomenal sense of humor with Zevon too. And there was a spiritual side of him . This great song!!! He was what you call a down-to-earth rock lyricist.
Fine dignified Song-writing. A Songwriter that can't face the reality of his own Life in his writing isn't much of a Songwriter. Warren Zevon sang for a great number of silent and silenced people not the college ignorated cynics and smart-mouths among us. Anyone that can turn his own passing away into Art deserves all the praise there is.
Time marches on Time stands still Time on my hands Time to kill Blood on my hands And my hands in the till Down at the 7-11 Gentle rain Falls on me All life folds back Into the sea We contemplate eternity Beneath the vast indifference of heaven
Warren Zevon is sooooooooooooooooo much more then the 2 hit songs he had. It'd be like if the Beatles had only 2 hits out of all the songs they put out.
What a brilliant man. So unappreciated for the unfathomable talent he had as a song writer, and musician. Warren was one of a kind. A quick wit. And profound too like this song. Zevon was phenomenal. Wish you were still with us. There will only be one of him. Maybe OCD but one of the smartest men that ever lived.
Mark Twain wrote, "Be good, and you'll be lonely." Even though Jimmy Buffett turned this passage to song, Mr. Twain knew that Warren Zevon would relay this message through his genius prose.
a truly musical artist. combines heartfelt passon with extraordinary intelleligence to the human soul. great humor, great depth of emotion and understanding of the human psyche(?). he is missed
P.S. "Fistful of Rain" was also a pleasant surprise to come across, Circumpunk is full of information on where to look for :Zevonite" info....Wikipedia has an entire list of all his albums, 15 in all if I'm not mistaken.
I was always very disappointed with the way this album was mixed. The performances are great (are they ever not?), but the vocals seem a bit washed out. And what's more important with this guy than the lyrics and timbre of his voice?

I could not live without Warren Zevon. So sad that he is unable to share this temporal life.
Seriously, I choke up at "Nothing left but the sound of the front door closing forever".
That's pretty much my biggest fear.

A real gem!
Circumpunk - yes, this one is another Zevon pleasure........ and yes, WOW.
i always did like his music he certainly can sing alot better than most people these days. Rest in Peace you will be missed by your fans warren.
God, the 12-string! Love it. Miss you, Warren.

I hope people will remember this stuff too, rather than just Werewolves of London. So great!
Highland804 Real WZ fans know his great catalog. HOF is a Hall of Shame without Warren Zevon!

Just great
Magic and truth together....miss your voice, Warren! The world needs more of this...
I believe it was Twain who said "Go to heaven for the climate, hell for the company." This was Warren at his best. Thanks for the post.
I always liked W. Z. buy his death really nicked me for a loop RIP
Great tune -- thanks for the share Geoff ...
Story of my life....and my favorite Zevon song, wish this was as popular as "Werewolves"....
Mark Twain wrote, "Be good, and you'll be lonely." Even though Jimmy Buffett turned this passage to song, Mr. Twain knew that Warren Zevon would relay this message through his genius prose.

This is why I had once said I think lots didn't comprehend some of Zevon's work. This one's
beautious....but then.....weren't they all?
Billy Joel & Christie Brinkley, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa...Bruce was very tight with Warren and cameo'd on several songs
I ve got memories to last me
This may be my #1 song ever. It is at least the truest song ever written.
miss you warren
Wow! This is frikkin GREAT! I have posted many Zevon tunes but didn't know about this one. I call myself a Zevonite. Thanks, Metroidfan. Damn!
o crap. now i have to figure it out for myself
@zitlight73 Warren never gets stale to me..no you're not the only one...you just have great taste ;-)
"The say everything's alright... but they don't live around here"
@boiledhooker
This forty-something year old teacher would give you an A just for knowing who Warren Zevon is!
This supports my dis-balief and my belief
RIP Jim

i feel i failed at everything but love
that's the only thing that ever really mattered
get tune
nope...i was wrong - it's billy joel and his wife, and bruce springsteen and his wife
Who are Billie and Christie, Bruce and Patty? Bruce Springfield,...?
Billy Joel, and his Supermodel wife, Christie Brinkley. Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa his wife.
@@aMaritzeThank you!
Thought it was funny that you asked that question 11 years ago, and no one answered. 😉 @@Woelflein

Is that so? It's the song you don't like or it's me?
Hey, Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame dudes - There is most definantly someone missing. Why don't you throw out some of the imposters and make room...
