    The software that came with my samsung did an absolutely terrible job on standard landscape photos with high variation in lighting. I installed open camera last week, and this was a perfect intro in how to use it. well done.
    most of the things covered here apply to both the video and photo modes for anyone who was wondering.

    Hey Justin, thank you for this video! Thanks to your tutorials I started making educational videos with my Samsung Galaxy S7. I used to believe that I had to buy some very expensive equipment to start but then I learned from your videos that it's not necessary. And it's true, I only bought a mic and a yongnuo light as you advised.
    I've been using the default camera app but after watching this tutorial I think I'll use Open Camera and even Filmic Pro. Thanks a lot!

    Just one thing I have found is that in spite of some settings being [apparently] available in the menu it doesn't mean the phone supports them. As soon as you start filming you will get an 'Sorry ** not supported' message. (Had this issue with my old LG G4 4K camera and with my newer [current] Pixel 6a 4K camera). In fact Open Camera crashes the Pixel 6a if you select some of the unsupported options.

The only way to get out of the manual mode settings is to restart the app. the rest of the app seems much better than stock camera though.

    The Bitrate part is important when it comes to how fast your memory is, like if you save onto an added Micro SD card. It has to be fast enough to actually write with the Mb/s speed you set. Also the Bitrate is in many cases unfortunately hardware locked and cannot be exceeded. Same goes for the audio bitrate of the video recording. Other camera apps like Cinema FV-5 show you where your phone's maximum bitrate can go to. Same goes for the framerate. The only way to see if the selected framerate actually works is to record a video at every selected framerate and check the videofile info if that is actually correct. I remember a few years ago i recorded some things on a Samsung Galaxy S3 and it would not record anything at 25fps with open camera. Even if it was set to 25fps it only recorded at 30fps.

    it would be nice if there was a video stabilisation option. there does not seem to be any stabilisation applied, as i tested filming walking slowly across the room and it was very shaky compared with the stock android camera. that's a shame as there are other features that are a lot better than the stock app, but I can't be having shaky videos!

    • @sentimentaloldme
      @sentimentaloldme 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is a video stabilisation setting ..Click on the little wheel go down to video settings and you'll find it there..On a personal note I find all these camera apps give you a lot more options than the native camera app but I also find that video quality from the native camera app is always slightly better. One bug I notice on the above app is the audio quality is not good ..by default it's set to stereo but I had to set it to mono to get any decent audio recording while making a video.

    • @kymbo72
      @kymbo72 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @sentimentaloldme nope, not on my app there is no stabilise setting. I already looked everywhere and I just checked again where you said and it's definitely not there on my version (latest version for Android). In researching online found quite a few people saying it used to be there but is now removed.

    Question: Is there a way to reduce contrast when videoing with Open Camera. I do craft videos and often have to show light against dark and the contrast is always too strong. I have locked white balance, exposure and focus based on a contrasty image but this does not help. I have tried to correct this in editing (DaVinci Resolve) but it is too strong to adjust and need to do it in camera. Your videos are fab and have helped me go from newbe with no knowledge to publishing my own online workshops - but I still need more quality control in the filming!

    Do you get static noise using an external mic? I have a Pixel XL (the original Pixel). I had this problem using Filmic Pro and Open Camera. So I googled looking for a solution. What I found out was that other Android users had the same problem (not sure about iPhone). I haven't found out how to make it work on Filmic Pro, but someone suggested a solution for Open Camera that has worked well for a couple of interview style videos I have recently shot. Go to 'Audio Source' in settings, and choose 'Optimised for voice calls'. When I did this the static background noise disappeared.

    Help .. my Open Camera app won’t save pictures
    I’ve tried clearing the memory and cache with no luck. I even uninstalled the app a couple of times then reloaded it, but still the problem persists.
    If I take a picture, I hear the ‘shutter’ sound, but there’s no wee image moving to the bottom right of the screen. The picture is nowhere to be found. I can only 'take' one picture ... the button doesn't work a second time. Funnily enough though, I can record and save a video.
    I have a Nokia 7+ phone
    Hedgecam app works fine, an app which I think has a connection to Open Camera

    Hi Justin,as always a great video.One question-wasn't sure who to ask...I bough a lavelier mic,boya BY-m1 to shoot with my phone.Following one of your videos I use it with the open camera app,as my own camera doesn't seem to allow external mic. And the sound quality is much better than without the lavelier mic for sure. But today I recorded a voiceover with filmora on my PC,connecting that same mic to the computer directly and Oh my dear what a change in quality....for better!!!!that means it's not the mic that's mediocre as I thought before,it must be the sound card on my mobile that's crap,right? Or STH else?And most importantly,is there any software or app I can buy to connect to my mobile to improve the quality of the sound,that is that will let the BOYA mic shine and thus help me have the sound quality as experiences in the voice over on filmora?? My phone's works with Android.I'd really appreciate the answer as I didn't know who to ask.

    Is there a focus that just keeps everything in focus so your background isn't blurry or foreground isn't blurry or nothing goes in or out of focus. Basically for vlogging selfies so when you are walking around you don't go out of focus or if you look at something you don't have to wait for it to come into focus etc?

    A great use that wasn't really covered is the "cheese" voice command to stop and start video, since my Android smartphone can only do this for photos. Also, this app enables bluetooth remote shutter for video too, which wouldn't work for me without this "Open Camera" by Mark Harmon app.

    I am using this open Camera for my videos. And then when I edit them. I'm using Vita and for some reason. When I upload my videos to TH-cam. They are not full screen think I'll only be recorded. You know and the smaller video I can't explain it. How can I fix that? So they are full screen videos?

    Thank you for this video Justin. Is there a setting in Open Camera to enable audio output in surround sound or surround sound emulation? I have an Android (Note 8) smart phone. Recording video with the on board camera app does facilitate this, but it seems like default settings in Open Camera does not. I poked around in settings and found nothing. Video Settings / Audio Channels does offer default, mono, and stereo. Actually trying default or mono did produce sound in my 2 rear speakers, but volume was very low and seemed to come with a little distortion. Any ideas? Thanks again!

    You can adjust the white balance with a slider, in manual mode. And you forgot about flat log modes for post processing video, i think is very important if you want to color control your video
