How to Break a Soft Pastel Stick

  • A quick video showing one method for making those small fur marks with bigger pastel sticks. Don't be afraid to break a pastel. Like an oil painter needs many different sized brushes for this type of style, you need your pastels in different shapes and sizes.
    Breaking it won't mean you use that pastel any faster, I promise! I have some of my tiny shards of pastel for years and they come out at important times for detail. Get them messy and broken and used...that's what they're made for :-)
    This is a Unison pastel I'm using. They break pretty clean with little wastage unlike sharpening.

      Thanks Khawaja, I do make use of pastel pencils, they're great for very fine detail and moving the pigment around. But there's no comparison to the strength of colour in the mark between the pencil and soft pastel so I try to use the sticks for as much as possible.
