The American Railroad Iceberg Explained Part 1

- If there’s one topic in American history which has an endless amount of information and lore, centuries-old tradition, and a massive following of millions of people, it would undoubtedly be railroading. Each railroad throughout the nation’s existence is unique with numerous historical and preservation societies dedicated to each one, with leagues of information on a single era of railroading. Yet, within this expansive history lies various events and attempts which are left almost unnoticed through the passing of time. Today, we are here to dig up and rediscover these fascinating facts of railroads across the nation, in the American Railroad Iceberg.
As a [late] 4th of July Special, I have decided to make a three part series on the American Railroad Iceberg by Thorax the Railfan. Apparently, this topic is so intriguing that I wasn't the only one who had the same idea. Grand Drunk Western recently uploaded a video on this topic, but there was a lot of information which he was not able to find which I included in my own script. I asked him if I could cover the missing info, and he agreed. At the same time, Seaboard Railfan expressed interest in creating a video on the same topic, and I asked him if we could work on this project together to avoid embarrassing duplicates and to combine our knowledge on each topic. He agreed, and we were able to create this project together so that it could be completed with as much info as possible.

Slight mistake: #611 didn’t derail in the Great Dismal Swamp Derailment. While going over a faulty switch, she made it passed the switch, but two passenger cars didn’t, causing them and nine more passenger cars to derail. Throughout this incident, #611 remained on the tracks.

Love that more obscure engines like the 3-Cylinder engines outside of SP and UP were mentioned, I've always liked odd and strange machines like them.
A lot of crazy things, but the idea of an ELSF merger never occurred to me honestly.
I'd love to see a video like this on Canadian or Mexican railroads.
It's insane just how little views this video has. You deserve far more.

If I remember correctly, KCS ended up merging with CP, rather than CN, making for two major international railroads on this continent.

There used to be another CB&Q motorcar, it was made intoa house. It was demolished recently, but there are photos of it before demolition inside the CB&Q Historical Society Archives. But a small piece of the metal wall was saved with the number on it.

More information on this:
The race was actually staged, as the plane was actually much faster. These interurban cars were meant for the top speed of 108mph, but during the race only reached 97 miles an hour due to track conditions. Also four Red Devil interurban cars still exist, not three.
Cars number 111, 116, 118, and 119.

Its great that the engines in merril oregon were saved, no wonder fred kepner kept the engines for this long, he most likely wanted to restore the engines, but probably couldnt because of life problems, a bit sad he didnt get to make his come true by himself but its nice to see his engines getting restored.

The Athearn "DD40" model you showed is a DD35A. My dad has the same model. The 35 is a cabless booster unit that was sold with GP35s. Then they added a cab and called it the A unit with the cabless still being a DD35 proper.
There's another American railroad Iceberg? Huh. This isn't the one that floats around the Discord servers. Interesting to see! This one seems more focused on railroad technology then history, and is really neat to see you guys play it out. Interesting topics.

IIRC, there is "Twilight Zone" episode where the derailment of the City of San Francisco was with the intent of stealing a load of gold being carried; the thieves then went into a period of suspended animation before awakening into a world where gold was readily available and no longer pricey.
CP may end up merging with KCS as originally intended. Trains Mag posted a week or two ago CP raised their bid after the heads at CN said no to merging with KCS (also please don't lash out at me for incorrect info)

For the record, the engines used on M-497 were off the wing of a B-36.
4:57 this is wrong apparently, metra wanted to preserve 5629 but Jensen was taking parts from it which made it a safety hazard.

Thanks for the correction. However, I did not create this iceberg (Thorax the Railfan did), so he wrote the entry of B25 Mitchells for NYC, and I tried to research info from that label.

I didn't create the iceberg, nor would i have enough info to create an international railway iceberg, but the topic does sound interesting.

I'm not sure. It will likely depend on which railroad owns them.

Both COT and 999 are unlikely to go 100 mph. Its more likely that the engine driver of COT or 999 told a fib, like imagine you were the engine driver of the first locomotive to go 100 mph. I think that both probability went 80 or 90 4-4-0 can be fast but probably not that fast, but no matter what the records say the British are the fastest and America just wants to be better with trains in one area. Ps if one of them was first it was COT.....or flying scotsman .
But not 999
Hence why it's in the iceberg. It's a mystery whose unconfirmed claim, like COT, led to its preservation.
@@Pensyfan19 what? I know the story of 999 and COT I was say that I don't really think they could have reach 100 mph but if one did go 100 its COT
@@Pensyfan19 well i agree with pennsyfan, the water level route being a flat and strait route for the most part and a train of like 4 cars might aswell be a reason why the engine could go that quick.
