Knowing what belt to choose can be the difference between a looking great and looking like a guy who doesn't have a clue in regards to style.
Belts, when chosen properly, are an amazingly stylish and finishing touch to a great outfit. A cool and coordinated belt can add subtle detail to your look. You can showcase your individual taste, personality, preference, and flair; howver, making sure you chose an appropriate, stylish, and coordinating belt is essential. Aaron Marino of alpha m. presents how to pick the best belt for your outfit with these six belt wearing tips.
Belt Wearing Tips
1. Know the difference between casual and dress belts - dress belt is length of thumb to the 1st knuckle (1 inch and 1/2). If it's wider than that, it's casual. Make sure the shoes coordinate to the belt in terms of dress level.
2. Buckle - go simple, subtle, and understated unless you're a 'cowboy' or 'rock star'.
3. Stick to the three main colors - black, brown, and tan. Bright and bold work in certain situations. Fabric belts can be more playful because of the casual nature, however.
4. Match belt color to shoes - Alpha discusses how to match antiquing and distressing shades of shoes to the belt.
5. Buy one size larger than your waist size - Alpha gives examples. Belts have 5 holes, go for the center 3. If you are on the ends, go up or down accordingly.
6. Wear leather - there is no other option. Synthetic belts suck! When you think of leather, do you think of cow? 90% of leather belts in the stores are made from tanned cow-hide. However, 'leather' means any tanned and processed animal skin. Alpha covers other types of leather: crocodile, eel, ostrich, shark, and hippo. +SkyProductions I have one and it's one of my favorite belts and looks good with really anything, I would invest in one if I were you because they last and Hermes takes care of you if something happens to it.
Here's a simplified rule for belt width: Buy either 1.5" or 1.75". Not all pants can accommodate more that 1.75, and anything less than 1.5 doesn't look right.

Alpha, for years I’ve used shoelaces as a belt. One cause they’re cheap, two I have multiple of them from previous shoes and three I have sensitive skin to certain metals and break out in a rash if on my skin for too long. Any suggestions?

I own a gucci belt and a hermes belt, both really nice, great quality belts. Heads turn and look at both of the belts. I believe anyone who does critic the belt cannot afford the luxury branding and are simply jealous.

Since everyone's talking about designer belts, i must say i dislike most, because the buckle is simply the letters of the company (gg ; lv ; h) and i think that's for people who get off on brand names. One that I really dig though is the versace 3d medusa head ones, i love the antique flair, that medusa just looks sick!

I know synthetic belts suck but I just hope one day we are able to create a perfect synthetic replica of leather which not only looks as authentic, but is just as durable and long lasting. Why kill a poor animal for style?

Caayotee There is a high cost to create those fake leather belts. However, with the increase of technological means, the costs go down.
Unfortunately, there will always be those who desire actual leather for the "prestige". Hopefully, this effect will disappear as time passes on (somewhat like waist-cover).
Anti-Dogma I was just reading somewhere how the Chinese have been able to alter human genome in embryos. If there is a will, humans can fake and recreate anything. But I agree, there will always be those who desire real leather (and fur etc.) for the prestige. I do not understand how wearing the hide of a dead animal is prestigious. To think of it, its actually pretty gross.
***** Indeed the act of eating meat is archaic. If that alone stops, the killing of animals could stop, cos apart from the hide, its the meat primarily for which they are killed. Instead of altering human genome, these mad scientists should alter plant genome so that there is never a scarcity of food for the population of this planet. But that is a debate for another day. :P

The width measurement shown for the belt was 1 3/16", not 1 1/2". All of my dress belts are 1 1/4" or 1 3/16".
