Regarding the Ginger Yield: The ginger shown in the beginning was not all used to grow just one plant. I broke the ginger apart (0:53) into pieces to start 4 plants (1:13). The ginger harvested at the end was started from a 2x1 inch piece and yielded 6x4 inch in ginger. It would have grown bigger if planted in-ground in right climate or in greenhouse.
Living in Kauai, ginger is plentiful. I've had some great success with turmeric as well. Pretty flowers!
Your weather is perfect for growing tropical plants. We visited Maui and I asked the farmer there if he has worms bins to keep earthworms. He said, the weather is so good, they are all over the farm, we don't have to farm them.

Same with other roots--- yucca, mandrake, burdock, ginseng... they are the root so they take the longest. It is definitely a plant that takes patience.

The greatest thing about ginger is that if you leave it in the ground and harvest after the plants die back, you can break it up into more pieces, plant those, and produce even more. I'll be doing something similar with ginger and turmeric that purchased this year. Their primary function will be landscape plants, their secondary function will be cutting my costs at the grocery store...lol
Ginger yields more in flat pots, it is not a root crop, it is a rhizome crop that grows along the surface, so depth is not the key but the width of container is. That's the reason why only 2-3 shoots showed up, and less yield.

The foliage on these plants is quite attractive. I would be inclined to grow it as a houseplant and then harvest and divide it on a yearly basis. If you had two pots of ginger and alternated between them, harvesting every 6 months, you might get decent yields and also a nice (cheap!) plant for your house. The leaves can also be used in stir-fries

I wouldn't recommend showering the plant in mid day sun. It works like a magnifying glass and burns the leaves more. Water early dawn before sun and dusk. Always before night because most of the root growth happens at night in the "rest" period. This is what I have found in my own experiences. 😊 loved the time lapses
Well his ginger turned out fine so apparently watering it in mid day didn't hurt it. He is the expert after all.

I live up in the mountains. It is a bit cooler here, but I don't think enough to make a difference. So I will give it a try too. We have humid weather that is for sure.
The Primitive Black Hat Society - I'm in NC, too. I grew some ginger in a pot all summer. Just brought it in for the winter. I put the pot in my birdbath for awhile and it seemed to do well in there. It has 2 stalks. I haven't dug down to see how much ginger is in there, but I can see a little bit pushing itself from under the soil.

I've done this before - a few comments: (a) this absolutely is "alot" of ginger - it's slow growing, (b) even though it's slow, it's worth it - the ginger you eat fresh out of the ground (or pot) will be unlike anything you've ever tasted from the store. My Mexican mother-in-law - who is used to heat - said it was almost too spicy for her. Crazy good!

you have to consider that he broke off several pieces from the original. I grow ginger in SW Florida the same way, get the same results. I put several smaller pieces in the soil and get back ten times as much. Patience is always a virtue. Another thing: when you suddenly need ginger for a recipe, you dont have to go to the grocery, you go to the back yard!
I think mainly because of the short season and lower gradual decline in the temperature. Over all i think his technique is good for growing ginger.

I’m so glad I saw your video. I’ve seen several, but none mentioned that the ginger had to be underneath the soil or it wild dry. My friend gave me a small plant several, I mean several years ago. It has grown so much that it’s grown 1/4 way out of the ground the top is dry. Thanks for the tip. All those years, it never dawned on me that it was the kind I could cook with, so I’m very excited. I made my favorite, ginger beef over rice the other day. It was fabulous. Rasa Malaysia has the best recipe for it.

You could try bringing it indoors to finish growing it. I once read that ginger takes a year but it looks like you got a pretty decent amount after the 6 months from that one small piece.
For those who haven't read his pinned comment, he broke that root into 4 before growing them each separately. That's not a bad amount of ginger from one small piece, and if left to
continue growing indoors it might even produce more
I grew ginger in Calif. and at the time I didn't know I was growing ginger, just a pretty flower so it was in the ground for maybe a year and then it blossomed . It has the most fragrant scent, way above any flower I ever grew. So I was surprised when I discover it was ginger I was growing and it multiplies fast. This was in West Covina Ca.
West Covina is not very cold, so it works. In central California we get a lot of frost and ginger does not make it though winter.

Nice vid. Your ginger stayed fresh for 6 months in the ground than it would have in the fridge/ when left outside. Not a lot quantity wise, I agree with others but it's a nice feeling to grow your own veggies (free from cancer causing pesticides) Your vid has inspired me enuf to grow some myself. It's early April in the UK. Hope it's not too late to sow some ginger in the ground.

Great ! I would pickle that ! It's hard to find fresh baby ginger.. it makes the best pickled sushi ginger. Buy the big stuff for cooking and use your home grown ginger for amazing pickled ginger slices... yum !!

This was my first year for ginger and turmeric. I am in south west Florida so sprouting doesn't happen til March or so. I want to get a head start this year as well. It is January now so at least I can grow plenty of corriander and methi, but looking forward to more of the other things soon. Thanks for your videos.

I have some 5' diameter kiddy pools. In fall I fill them with sand, leaves, grass and lots of wood chips. A couple of earth worms. Come spring I plant my ginger and by fall it is a 5'dia forest. It likes mostly shade. Tumeric grows the same way but likes more sun. My Tumeric flowered in it's 2nd year.

You could try growing in grow tunnels to start, then take off the tunnel covering when it's warm enough. Or buy a cheap small greenhouse to grow your ginger, then you could start other stuff in the greenhouse too. Your local hardware store should have a greenhouse in the spring.

Jag, you can pre-sprout your ginger now in a Zip-Lok bag of moist potting soil. Store in a warm, dark place until the planting bed is ready.

Use longer containers for way more yield as ginger tends to spread a lot. With longer containers, you tend to get forearms worth of ginger.

Create a ‘tropical zone’ in a room in your house and keep it hot and humid. Ginger, Turmeric, Lemons, Limes, Avocados, papayas, pineapples, and so many more tropical fruits will grow wonderfully well year round in climate-controlled rooms, with the appropriate lighting setup.
This is an extremely cost effective and ‘fun’ way to grow organic tropical produce for one’s family.

Yes. I made a little timer frame greenhouse - its 8x8 and I covered the outside; with the first layer being that small bubble wrap pool cover material, then 90% shade cloth. I live in the desert so not much humidity here in the summer. I placed several fog disks from www.thehouseofhydro.com inside. I am now growing two PawPaws which are tropical plants and I am pretty happy with the results, they came as 4" sticks - LOL and have already grown 2' since I received them two months ago. So I will try the ginger growing next summer, too late now. I have a small farm and I grow quite a bit with a modified Kratky system which is passive hydroponics, with air stones. I grow in 12" tree tubes that have ridges inside so they don't have the roots circling. I place it in a 2 gallon bucket with an airstone and keep the water/nutrient level under 5". The bottom 5" of the tree tube has Hydroton pebbles in it so it acts as a wick to the coir/perlite/vermiculite at the top of the tree tube. I say all this because I think my setup would be perfect for ginger growing. As we literally have about 300+ days here of sun, I don't need lights and I found, quite interestingly, that the high humidity (65-80%) from the fog disks kept everything from freezing in the winter (I live at 3400').
