- Julian is back with an all new season of The Science of Empathy! Twenty dollars is a lot of money...well, maybe not that much. But how much of that money would you be willing to share with another person? How would they feel if they were your spouse, cousin or maybe even a total stranger? On the premiere episode of The Science of Empathy, we investigate the ability to feel what others are feeling with a little game. We gathered strangers, couples, friends, and family alike for our premiere experiment in the Science of Empathy. What cut of the twenty dollars would you give away, when you consider someone else’s feelings?

I'm really suprised more people didn't just give 10 dollars it seems like the most straight forward thing to do.
Yeah I feel the same, I don't understand how people had to think about it at all... If I was with the person, I'd give them all of it, cause "what's mine is yours" and I share money in my relationships anyway. If it was a stranger, or someone I'm not close to, I'd have given $10, we're both getting the same amount, why not??
Splitting $20 is easy. Now make it $20 million and things will get interesting.
@@allanfaigao4677 that`s a very good point you are making. How would the amount at stake change the dynamics? I can imagine that for those couples that are wildly in love with each other (like those two girls) the amount would not change anything. You could probably put $2 billion on the table, and the result would be the same. However, if a relationship is driven by reason, tactics, powerplays ... the results could be vastly different and highly unpredictable, I guess.
I'm really surprised more people didn't just split the money 50/50. That was my immediate reaction.

That's what I think too, but then I decided it's against the spirit of the excercise... it's an ultimatum, not a comprimise.
In that vein, I'd offer 8 dollars. Extracting as much as I can while being sure that the offer is palatable.
@@InternetMameluq I don't think it's against the spirit of the exercise. You can offer literally any amount that would be satisfactory to the other person and that is $0 to $20. My first thought was, that if I sat at the table, I'd probably go with 10/10 because it's fair for both sides and thus easy to accept. The variety of results came as a surprise to me, quite frankly.

This is actually an exercise in game theory that shows that we aren't purely rational beings. A purely rational person would accept any offer because you're better off with even just one dollar compared to nothing. I guess it's our sense of justice/fairness that tells us not to accept an offer we perceive as unfair even if it is objectively worse for us.

Yes! We have a lot of human biases while negotiating and most times we just go with our gut feeling rather than rational thinking. And that's why maybe some day humans will be replaced by negotiating AI.

This activity is actually an example of game theory which is more or less about rational/strategic decision making. I could see how it could potentially be related to empathy, but I don't think it's that tightly related. I was also hoping Julian would mention that empathy is different from sympathy because empathy means you are able to share in a person's feelings because you have experienced the same (or similar) thing that they currently are, while sympathy means you can be supportive/compassionate, but you can't exactly understand their feelings because you have not had that experience. Both are good to practice, but I think it's an important distinction to make.

I can't imagine keeping any of it unless I was literally hungry and had absolutely NO money!! You could make someones day for a lousy $20. Are we all really so starved for a few bucks? We all see how beautiful it was when the one woman gave her Love the whole amount... Nicely done.
Regardless of the precise definitions, this video was a bit of an eye-opener for me. There are definitely situations, most recently when I talk with and about gay people, where I find it much more logical to imagine what they are feeling than to imagine me being in the same positon. However, I'm sure that in more everyday situations, where I have been in the same position as the other person, I too often only look at how I felt or would feel, rather than how the other person is actually feeling about said position. After all, it's about the emotions that are actually being felt and not about the ones that would be 'logical' to feel. :)

Jello k. I learned that empathy could play a deep role in a process of making decisions that actually are gonna impact to people's happiness. It would be no more about putting yourself into people's position to make the choice they probably would make if they were in your place, but to make the right choice based on how they would feel out of your action.

This is awesome!!! This video really highlights the fact that you don't have to go through what someone else is going through in order to feel the emotion that they feel.
An argument I hear frequently from people who have a ton of privilege is that they don't know what it's like not to have it so they can't understand how someone without their same privillage would feel. That's sympathy and not as helpful as empathy. Connecting with emotions of others is hard.

I dont think this is about empathy and more whats the least amount i can give this person so i dont lose the money so really its self preservation
Perhaps that's the lesson of the experiment. Those who acted out of self preservation were not being as empathetic as those who took a moment to feel what the other person would feel receiving a certain amount of money.
Agreed. I also think empathy could be studied both ways... the person accepting it would feel empathetic to the person that offered. The guy who got 8 dollars could be happy his friend got to keep 12. Where as the one that rejected the offer didn't have empathy towards his cousin.

Had me and my girlfriend played this game i would have given her all the cash & she would have given me nothing & we would have won. She knows i hate carrying cash on me 😭😂 I’m not bad with my money, but i feel it goes a lot faster when you aren’t able to keep track of how much you’re spending 24/7. I don’t have it in me to keep a mental tab each time i spend. I like the simplicity of just checking my account 🤷🏾♂️😂
Playing with married couples or friends defeats the validity of the exercise. It only makes sense if it's between strangers who won't interact again

5:35 This Ultimatum Exchange made me very uncomfortable. ☹️ The guy in the blue shirt gave himself $12 and only offered $8 to the baseball cap guy which made him settle. It basically put the cap-wearing dude in a situation where HE HAD TO SETTLE FOR LESS (self-sacrifice) or both parties would lose which might tick off the other guy. Blue shirt guy... I don't know you, but that move seemed VERY SELFISH. 😑 In the future, please offer 50/50 so it's fair for BOTH PARTIES or be a generous gentleman and offer the other party MORE. #Done
lialiakicks I agree but also think about a perspective where the $20 was yours from the beginning, you’re giving away a sum of money from your own pocket for nothing in exchange to total stranger. That would change things wouldn’t it? It’d kinda be like well they should be grateful they’re getting any money at all, there’s no context behind the other person they’re literally just endangering your money (if you think of larger sums like thousands of dollars)
zamxit To be honest, that perspective is very dangerous. Almost psychopathic... This game is more like an heritance that's available under certain conditions. Yes, the money is yours BUT you have to please the other player, therefore the money is not only yours.
jjspot It's true you have to consider the other person but what if we were talking about your life savings? You'd essentially be a hostage to their level of contentment because they have nothing to lose, only something to gain, whereas you only have something to lose. In the context of empathy the taker should be content with any amount; would you find it right to take half of someone's life savings when you really don't know them or deserve any of it? I'd say it's more psychopathic to gamble with someone's money with no risk at all than the giver's act of self preservation

I understand the point of this game, but why decline the other persons offer? It would make the most sense to accept any offer except for an offer of $0. Why? Because at least your getting a bit of money. My first thought if I was the person with money would be to offer $1. If the person isn't filled with spite, then they should understand the concept enough to accept the offer because at least they would get a dollar.

How did the black and white guy know each other? Every other pair we knew their relationship to each other. This is important to me because I couldn’t figure out why the white guy was wanting more of the money. He made a big deal out of not feeling it was okay to give any more than he did.

Empathy is only relevant because they have a relationship with the recipient right? Since the recipient would feel some entitlement for their personal relationship? If they were a total stranger the empathy focus would shift to the recipient rather than the giver wouldn’t it?
I feel like in a situation where the money is yours from the beginning and the recipient is a total stranger, the recipient should be scrutinised for empathy because they should realise they’re taking money from someone and shouldn’t expect much/should be grateful they’re getting any (as they aren’t entitled to any), instead of endangering the other person’s money. If they possess high empathy they would know not to take so much of someone’s money, and would accept anything as they wouldn’t want the person to lose anything.
In the vid, even if the giver offered more it’s really just a means to safeguard their own possessions, since they are considering what amount will appease the other party before they lose everything. It’s determining a Nash equilibrium based on judgement of the recipient’s character and predicted satisfaction level rather than a test of one’s empathy, no? I don’t see how empathy is relevant when there is no context behind the recipient (like struggling, homeless etc), and if they were a total stranger empathy seems further out of the equation. It’s more of a judgement of how selfish/empathetic the other person is rather than how selfish/empathetic the giver is.

I can't see that this was enough of a test of empathy. I'm, sure the context and issues were tossed around before carrying this out, The bonds between two people of the same in group seemed too strong to me to get to underlying reactions of empathy, First criteria would be to choose people who didn't know each other. The tests of empathy as I see it are between in groups and out groups.
Secondly I wouldn't have them of the same generation, Thirdly and more importantly I would test for perceptions of economic success, I would split the group into two sub groups. those that appear noticably more successful than one. and those that appear noticably poorer than one. The division is that one person would appear to be in a career starting condition, early 20s, living frugally, but not poor, Then the richer group would be a wealthy 40s-59s opposite gender person, and a 40s-50s very noticably poor clean vs poor dirty appearing person. I would check the age of the experimental subject with PEW Survey data to see who has expressed the most and least empathy, and see if your experiment supports this on economic conditions of the responses

I had to first read my comment, and then go back and watch the video 2 more times before writing this. I was particularly interested in the black and white pair. and the comment afterwards by the two of them. I think the white guy hit the social condition on the mark of what I perceive as the white condition in the States. Yeah, i am currently outside the borders.
