Will do mine this winter. 2003, not been adjusted once. I'm sure it needs it, did hear some clicking on hot day ride. Runs like a top besides that! Thank you!
Just did my desmog and valve adjust on my 2006 vtx800 r with 14500 miles. Thanks for all the good info and links, it helped a lot. I too experienced more low end power and a different and louder exhaust sound. I don't know if this was the result of the desmog or valve, adjust. The intakes were just a little off.
Can I assume that the exhaust valve on the front cylinder is adjusted at the same time as the intake valves while on the 'FT' mark at TDC compression stroke? Also the same for the rear cylinder on the 'RT' mark on the compression stroke at TDC? Great video. Thanks
Would like to thank you for your video, can't get to a dealer for 6 weeks and just ordered everything to get this job done on my vtx 1800. Have worked on ny own bikes for years, self taught through people like yourself and manuals. Would you be able to add subtitles or information and tips on what you were doing while putting everything back together? Must be a bit slow and got a bit lost at the end. Don't mean to add it now, just in other videos for the less mechanically inclined like me. Thanks again, this video was really well made.
I'm thinking of adjusting the valves on my 03. If they are anything like the Honda car engines, they're probably too tight. Really hate to get in there and find out it was a waste though. Anyone seen any tighten up?
I have my engine pulled. I’ve asked around and had a few mechanics give me some advice with no luck. Burned up 2 quarts of coolant in about 70 miles. Coolant drops into crank case and steams out of the crank breather I installed into my front cylinder. Very tiny amount is in the oil but it’s hard to even see it in there. Gaskets we’re good. Heads and cylinders look fine. I’m curious if maybe something is warped or if you had any ideas, thanks. Heads were worked on in the past for more power, cylinders bored to 2000cc at a shop. Performance cams/pistons etc.
The repair manual says that the gap for the intake valves should be 0.005 +-0.001 and the exhaust 0.013 +-001. I decided to go with 0.004 so it takes a bit more time until they start making noise again.
Jim D Exactly. As long as it’s reinstall, it’s enough torque to keep it in place and not damage the aluminum threads. If it’s a new plug, you need to snug by hand, then turn half a turn with the wrench to crush the washer, then torque to 13 ftlbs

I have a 2003 VTX 1300. I have gone through an unbelievable amount of trouble to get this blatty sound out of my pipes. It only does it when the engine is sustaining a steady RPM (holding 35 mph on level ground). All four spark plugs are black running rich. Puffs of black smoke, cleaned carb, sent to a shop, added baffles to V&H big shots, then rebuilt the carb, replaced air cutoff valve, and all jets. I’m about to test compression, valve adjustment, and check for air leaks. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
15,000 miles btw. I’ve decided to proceed with the valve adjustment just because it’s due anyway. Hopefully I found my answer in the comments section. Very helpful.
Hi! You could try some additive into the fuel,.. Like the stp injector cleaner,.. And run in 3-4 fillings.. The stuff is made for cars, but also worked great to my bike.

Nesse caso so abrindo o motor.
definitely check the FPR! Mine was bad and caused the bike to get way too much fuel! I went from getting around 13 mpg to 52 mpg just by replacing the FPR and she is running so much better!

Once you get the valve adjusted rotate the motor to lock valve then tighten and remove guage.that way it is perfect and doesn't move.

I have a question. I saw everywhere that the intake valve should be adjusted to 0,06 but in your video you show 0,04. Is there a reason why?

Neutro
Great vídeo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
When you adjust the clearance, you allowed +/- 1 thousandth. Is it à good idea to adjust on the tighter side expecting the gap will get more loose?
That's a bad idea. if you do that, you'll have premature wear and it will make noise.
As the valve seat wears the clearance gets smaller until they no longer close.
PS I found rotten fuel lines while doing the valve adjust and replaced them. They could have caused a real bad day as they are laying right on top of the engine!

I just bought a 2003 1800C. It only has 4,900 miles, but it sounds kind of loud. Is there anyway the valves would need to be adjusted already?
You should never have to gap these plugs, if they're out of range, they need replaced, but that's rare.
Thanks for the tip

22k miles
