Number one: the newsies didn't actually sing in the streets of New York when they were striking. Heck, most of them could barely whistle, much less do choreographed dance numbers
There’s historical evidence that there was a Newboys' quintet. They sang and dance. Historically accurate! XD plus, in many newspaper articles, they mention newsboys singing
We all know that Jack Kelly would grow up to be an 80s yuppie who may or may not be a murderer, move to Gotham City to fight crime, while battling a heroin addiction and in turn became the VP of the USA.
All of Christian Bale's film career is one character. Also, before he was Jack Kelly, he had a ranch in Arizona that was going under so he faked his death in a heroic fashion to get away from there (310 to Yuma)...a ranch he purchased after selling his first wife's Italian villa (Midsummer Night's Dream)
Interesting fact: (may be wrong) Historically Ed "Racetrack" higgis" was Know as the true leader of brooklyn, Also he was known for being the "Vice president" of the strike, So Spot was based off of historical racetrack and not someone else
The name Spot Conlon was mentioned one time in the beginning of the strike as the leader of Brooklyn. After that, however, he was never mentioned again, and it was Racetrack that took that title. While it may have been a completely different person who wanted to claim they were the leader for a bit before Racetrack took the spot, it's likely that Spot Conlon and Ed "Racetrack" Higgins were the same person.
I'm amazed to see anything about this movie mentioned today lol. I feel most of the focus is on the Broadway performance (which is good), but I can't get enough of this movie.
I'm glad you mentioned the fact the other papers had lowered distribution cost. The movie makes it out like there was no competition and all the papers were just praising and mirroring Pulitzer's moves. It was only those 2 papers. But that those papers shouldn't have changed, but my point is they weren't all being exploitative and that competition drove awareness of the newspaper boys/girls
The movie is better than th stage version. The film is mutch more tied to them being kids, which is just not something you get from the Broadway one (even when they are played by kids). The spunky-girl-reporter is patronizing. It also means you miss out on them having an older man that those boys look up to, who takes them seriously, and then lets them down, works well thematically. We're the Kings a New York is a grown man getting caught up in their youthful excitement. "Gasp! She Pulitzer's daughter!" is stupid. The "deeply in love" relationship of a 17 year old and the woman who has to be at least 22, is weird if you actually believe Jack is 17 (5 years is not a bad age gap with 2 people in their mid to late 20, but what's in the play, are a crucial 5 years), or it further undermines the teenage boy, out of his depth, rising to the occasion story, by making him seem older. In the movie, Jack's relationship is more puppy love, sweet, but no one is saying they're soul mates. However I can see the interest in making a more central female character, I always thought a girl newsie, who is particularly feeling the pressures of adulthood and a "woman's place" pressing in on her could be interesting. I also don't see why they should be just one (a token), they're could be a whole sprinkle of female newsies, heck include the being scabs, tell that side of the story
Yeah, but the stage version makes you feel more for the story, I just re-watched the movie and the writing was not perfect but okay but I didn't like the actors. And Broadway is Broadway they're always going to add more amazing singing and dancing, and Kenny Ortega always adds singing and dancing in his movies. I like the stage version better because it has more energy and better acting and I'm also a theater kid, but that's just my opinion.
@@miguelstanley4360 I love theatre too and I live broadway but I still like the movie better because: 1. King of New York was way more energetic and fun in the movie 2. Fun Fact: There was a female Newsie in the original script for the movie, that was the love interest for Jack Kelly, however since she was going to live in a relative's brothel, they decided to change this part of the storyline due to Disney deciding to produce it and the brothel aspect would not be appropriate for their audience. Just read it in a "Newsies" book that gave some background info.
Fun Fact: By his own account, Christian Bale wasn't too happy with the decision to turn Newsies into a musical. He is at least aware of the film's cult audience, stating that "saying something negative about Newsies means there's an awful lot of people you have to answer to." It's something that would garner more just an embarrassed look than actual outrage (he even once briefly sang the "Santa Fe" refrain during an interview for The Dark Knight Rises), but suffice it to say, he's sworn off musicals.
would love to see that interview lol. but yeah I get why he would be upset signing up for one thing and it turning into another which he knows isn't a strong suit
