      @@DanBaileyPhoto Thanks for asking, Dan. This is my first Fuji, and my first interchangeable lens camera. I was motivated to buy a new camera because I love landscapes and have always found whatever I had-fixed lens compact, phone-to never be able to capture the majesty of the memories. I bought Fuji for two reasons: because I liked the idea of being able to have a nicely processed image right out of the camera, and because when I began to get a sense of how this camera would help me better learn photography by putting the exposure triangle dials right there on the body of the camera. I still feel like a toddler with it, but I’m practicing…

      @@DanBaileyPhoto Oh I should add that your book helped me understand bracketing, which I’ve used to apply 3 different film recipes to each shot so I can get a better feel for which recipe might work better for different kinds of shots. Would be nice if I could make a custom setting that allowed me to quickly choose from among a few different recipe combinations without having to change the bracketing settings individually. Still, I love that bracketing mode for learning!

      Christy, how exciting!! Congratulations on your X-T5 and welcome to club! 😀 Being new to "real camera photography," there is certainly a lot to learn, but like everything else, you'll take baby steps and learn along the way. The X-T5 is a great camera to get learn and get more comfortable with the basics and the exposure triangle. My advice is to keep things simple. Here's my best advice for dealing with exposure with a camera like the X-T5: th-cam.com/video/FSxxQ4RwCYk/w-d-xo.html

      I'm so glad that you're finding my book to be such a helpful resource! Bracketing the film sims can be a really fun and effective learning tool. And yes, it's a bit of a pain that you can't create multiple bracketing options as custom settings, but you can at least set up different recipes in your C1-7 slots. Thanks, Dan!
    It does feel like something of a paradigm shift for me: coming from years of using just the traditional Q Menu. In recent years they have always kinda been 'switch film simulation recipe'; and I would then adjust focus mode, metering, drive setting, etc. using the dedicated buttons and dials.
    Whereas, now, with the X-H2, the C1-C7 on the PASM dial means I can combine all those things ... but now have to think about how best to balance the two halves of my brain: All the colour and tone control + all the operational settings like AF mode, shooting mode (!! I hadn't even thought about being aperture/shutter speed/program priority for years! I just adjusted them with the dials)
    Hmm. Maybe I should have got the X-T5! 😂 (NB. Don't anyone lecture me here. My X-H2 decision was perfectly sound 😉)
    Anyway ... thanks again, Dan. Really appreciate your work and channel.

Yes, the C1-7 settings options on the new 5th gen models greatly improve the customization and quick recall of these new cameras, especially on the X-2 and X-H2S, which can also save settings like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and AF-C/S. Hi, I have a very specific question and would like your advice. I have done extensive research but I am still confused. Are the 7 Q Button setups overlapped with the 7 Custom Modes (C1-C7)? What are their differences? What is the point to set 2 sets of custom settings? When I use my XT-4, I set the Q Buttons. Now, I have two choices namely Q Modes and 7 Custom Modes on my XH2s. Thus, I am now confused. I have a copy of your Fujifilm X Series Unlimited. It is a very helpful book.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment and for buying my X Series ebook, I'm glad you're finding it to be a helpful resource. To answer your question, things are a little different on your X-H2s compared to the X-T4.
      On the older Fuji modes, like the X-T4, the C1-7 slots inside the Q Menu are factory presets that use default shooting settings, each with a different film sim. For example, C1 is Provia, C2 is Velvia, C3 is Astia, etc... However, you can override any one of these by modifying theses or create your own Custom Setting presets, and you can select them EITHER in the Q Menu, inside the IQ Menu, or you can assign a Fn button for quick access of your C1-7 modes. On both models, you create your custom shooting modes inside the IQ Menu.
      On the X-H2s, your shooting mode is tied to the Mode Dial, whether you're shooting P, S, A, M, or one of your C1-7 Custom Modes, and the difference is that the Q Menu only displays your current Shooting Mode in that first slot. Unlike the X-T4, it's not selectable. Does that make sense?

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there. When an option is grayed out, it's because there's a conflict with another setting. There are a couple of things that will disable film simulations. Are you using a model that has an AUTO switch, like the X-T30 or X-S10/20? If this switch is enabled the camera will go into Full Auto mode and override a number of IQ and camera settings including film simulations. Also, if the camera is set to one of the ADV shooting modes on the Drive Dial, or in the Drive Menu, that will also disable the film sim setting in the menu. Let me know if either of those is the case.

    I have a x100s with only three custom settings I can assign. After I enter my film recipes into all three custom settings is there any way to quickly access the original film presets minus the recipes I entered? Or do I have to assign a basic camera pre-set into one of the custom settings? Confusing, I know.... I've assigned my Fn button to bring up Custom Settings quickly but I'd also like to quickly use the standard pre-sets (Provia, Monocrome etc) minus the user customization.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Floyd, thanks for your comment. You should be able to do that. Even if you have a custom setting saved and are using that setting, you can always go back to the Q Menu and select BASE, instead of one of the C Settings. This will bring you back to that last camera configuration you had set before you selected the custom setting.
      For example: Let's say your C1 recipe is Provia with +2 Shadow tone. You shoot with that for awhile. Then you go back to the Q Menu and choose BASE instead of C1. Now, you change to 0 Shadow Tone and Velvia. You shoot with that for awhile, then switch to C1. If you go back to BASE, it should revert back to Velvia with 0 Shadow tone.
      So, BASE is your current configuration. You can shoot in one of your Custom settings, but the you go back to BASE, it will revert to whatever you had right before you switched to your C setting. Does that make sense? It's a little confusing, and you might just have to play around with it until it makes sense.

    • @Floydwellian
      @Floydwellian 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DanBaileyPhoto hey thanks... I'll grab the camera and follow your steps. I was under the impression that BASE kept switching to C1 or C2 and completely losing the original film preset because BASE and C1 under the Q menu were the same. Yeah it's confusing!!😂

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The BASE thing is tricky indeed. It took my awhile to figure out what it's doing, and I still get confused. 🤣 Another thing to keep in mind, if you're changing settings inside the Q Menu, and you see a red dot on the setting you're changing, then that setting will become the new BASE setting for that parameter.

    Thanks so much for explaining this Dan... It was always a bit of a mystery to me. I often have to switch between landscape shooting and fast bird action shooting. I wish that the Custom Settings allowed you to store shutter speed, continuous focus, shutter type (ES or MS), pre-ES, zone autofocus, etc. My workaround is to dedicate my X-T3 to that type of photography and it's pretty much welded to the 100-400mm zoom. I use my X-Pro2 and X-T2 for everything else. One remaining mystery to me is the Q button. Have you ever done a video explaining that?

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark, you're welcome. Glad you found this helpful. On the new X-H models, you can indeed store shutter speed, AF-C, Shutter Type, PRE SHOT ES and Zone AF into a custom setting, because all of these parameters are software based and not tied to a specific knob or switch, like they are on the X-T cameras.
      So, that might be information to keep in mind when you decide to upgrade. I'm super happy with the X-T5, and as I mentioned, a skilled photographer can change these settings pretty quickly in the moment. I've shot tons of action and birds with the X-T1, 2, 3, 4 and now 5, and I've never felt I was missing something.
      To answer your other question, I haven't done any videos about the Q button. Specifically, what would you like to know about that control?

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark, the Q button/menu has been on the X Series cameras from the very beginning, and it's simply a way to access 16 commonly used settings instead of diving into the regular menus. A few years ago, Fuji started including a control to disable the Q button, because some people were accidentally hitting it with the heel of their hands. On current models, you can assign it as a regular Fn button, as the Q menu button, or disable it.
      But again, the main idea of the Q menu is that you can store 16 different camera settings (long press on the Q button to bring up the assign menu) for easy access to commonly used controls.

      @DanBaileyPhoto  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment. The X-T5 is different than the two X-H models in that certain shooting settings are tied to dials and switches on that cameras. You cannot assign or change shutter speed, aperture, ISO, S/C/M focus mode or Drive Mode in the menus, or assign them to a Custom Setting, like you can with the X-H2 and X-H2S.
      The dials do offer quick adjustments of these parameters, which is why I love the X-T series cameras, but this setup does limit what you can assign to a Custom Setting. Hope that helps. What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot with your X-T5?

However it’s not what I only shoot so having a designated button to quickly access saved settings for BIF like shutter speed at say 1500/2000 aperture at 5.6 and ISO. I took it for granted that the XT5 could do this and didn’t think to check when my older and cheaper canon and Nikon had no issues saving these settings to a pre saved button

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Understandable, but I think with a bit of practice, you can set up and configure your X-T5 to "Bird" mode very quickly. With my X-T5, I've set up a Custom Setting #1 that has SUBJECT DETECT AF - "Birds," with Specific AF-C Custom Settings parameters, Electronic Shutter and PRE-SHOT ES.
      Then, I set one of my Fn buttons to RECALL C1 SETTING. See here in this video: th-cam.com/video/BTX-2xUIRQk/w-d-xo.html
      So, when I want to shoot birds, I simply hit that Fn button and switch to my C1 setting, and then make three very quick adjustments: 1: Spin the ISO dial to a desired setting, (or else just keep the camera on AUTO ISO), 2: Flip the AF selector switch to AF-C, and 3: Spin the aperture ring most or all the way open so that I get the fastest shutter speed possible for my current ISO setting.
      This method is a tiny bit slower than just just switching to a single Custom setting like on the X-H2S, but again, with practice, you can configure the camera very quickly. I use this method all the time for shooting action and it's like second nature for me to make these adjustments. Either way, the RECALL C1 Fn setting is very handy feature that you should use. Does this all make sense?

    My question specifically is: Is it normal not to change the white balance shift variables in the custom settings in my x-T3? When I set the type of white balance in the custom setting, even if it is based on Kelvin, I cannot access the white balance shift changes there. I have to go to the white balance menu itself and apply those changes, but if I go to another of the seven custom settings, the last white balance will be transferred to it. Is there a solution to this? Thank you very much for your complete explanation.

      Hi there, thanks for your comment. You should be able to assign a custom WB setting with the WB shift changes applied right there in the Custom Settings page. When you're saving or editing a Custom Setting, select White Balance, choose one of the Auto settings and then click right, which will bring up the WB Shift grid. You can then make your changes, and it should only save to that Custom Setting.
      Let me know if that works.

      "The workaround is to not change settings for the custom bank from the edit screen but to make the changes to settings before going to the custom bank then select the option to SAVE CURRENT SETTINGS under the EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING, it's the first line item on the first page. So make whatever changes you want saved then go to save current settings-that way you can make shift adjustments and changes in other settings at the same point."

    Thanks for the video. I’m facing an issue, whenever I make one of my own recipes or emulate a series I find on the app, I basically loose control over the shutter speed and the aperture dial basically is not responsive at all. Everything goes into auto, which is extremely frustrating when shooting traffic scenes or street photography. How do I fix this and regain control over shutter speed and aperture? Mind you, everything works fine on the Manual mode. It’s only when I go on one of the C1 to C7 dials that I face a problem.

      Ok, I heard back. It sounds like you didn't set up a shooting mode when you entered the recipe into your camera. On the X-H2S, Custom Settings are expanded beyond just the IQ menu; they include settings from the AF/MF and SHOOTING SETTINGS menu, as well as specific shooting parameters. When you create a recipe from scratch, you need to specify a shooting mode, as well as some other parameters. Does that make sense?

That part seems to work - however when I go back to my PASM dial and pick, say, shutter priority or aperture priority, those same Custom 1 settings are still there, not what I had been previously been using for those particular settings. How do I get my custom settings to stay put not affect the other settings on my PASM dial?

      Maryl, I've actually contacted one of the Fujifilm tech reps to see if he can answer this. He's going to check his own X-S10 and get back to me. One question, are you using the aperture ring to change f/stop?

      Dan, thank you so much for doing that! Yes, I am using the aperture ring. I later decided to do another Custom setting, No. 2, to set up your landscape parameters, to see which custom setting would be overriding the other PASMs. Custom 1 is the winner! (I had set up Custom 1 for Milky Way photography, as I’m heading to the desert soon). I had set the Kelvin to 4000 after much fussing around, and now my Q menu says K4000 on all my PASMs. I can choose WB with one of my dials, but can’t seem to get rid of that pesky high Kelvin number on the Q. I think I am trying to do too much before I know the camera, ha ha! Thank you again for checking! Just for that, I will buy your Focusing Tutorial!

      Maryl, you're welcome and thanks so much for enrolling in my AF course. I hope you find it to be a helpful resource! Regarding your original question, what the tech rep told me was that the aperture ring is likely overriding the aperture that's set on the camera. So, if you have one f/stop saved to a custom bank, but the lens is set to a different f/stop, the camera will use the lens f/stop, not the one saved to your C bank. Does that make sense?

    Hey Dan just found your channel after picking up a X-T5 from being a Sony shooter and have found it really helpful! I was wondering if you had any update on how to have just "film recipes" stored in the X-T5 vs each custom setting including the camera settings as well? With my X100V I was able to just store the image settings and when I changed the photometry for example in C1, it would automatically be applied to C2 as well.
    I totally get the appeal of having C1 for street C2 for landscape, etc. but that personally isn't how I shoot and really enjoyed being able to quickly swap jpeg recipes while maintaining consistent camera settings across the board!

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment. This is a really good question, and I just sent a few minutes with my own X-T5 to try and figure it out.
      The problem that you're running into is that the increased processing power of the X-T5 over the X100V allows the X-T5 to store more camera settings to a custom setting. Where the X100V will only store IQ settings, like film sim, WB, H/S Tone, etc..., the X-T5 can also store AF and SHOOTING Settings to a C1-7 setting.
      So, let's say you create a C1 setting with a specific film sim recipe, say Velvia with +2 Shadow Tone and -2 Color, even though you don't specifically assign a Photometry setting, since this is an available option, it will save the default (Multi), or whatever you currently have stored.
      You then set C2 as an Astia based recipe, and while you're shooting C2, you change Photometry to Spot. Then you go back to C1. Photometry will still be set to Multi. Change back to C2. and it's still Spot. Therein lies your frustration.
      If you're not specifically using a C1-7 shooting mode, then any changes/settings you apply will be remembered. So if you change film sims, the Photometry will stay the same, or if you set Photometry to Spot, it will stay no matter what film sim you choose. However, I can see, in your situation, you're using specific JPEG recipes that might be comprised of a few different IQ settings, so setting Photometry and then simply switching between different film sims doesn't quite work for you, because you'd have to go in and select all of those other recipe settings each time you changed.
      This is an interesting case where the X-T5 has much more power, but this flexibility also has a downside. There might be a workaround, but I'm not finding it, so I'm going to ask one of the Fujifilm tech reps and see what he thinks, and if he knows of any possibly solution. At the very least, he can pass this concern along to the product managers. I've done this before with certain issues, and there have been instances where those issues have been addressed and changed/updated in future firmware settings.
      Sorry I couldn't come up with a specific solution for you, but we'll see what the tech rep says. In any case, what kinds of subjects do you like to shoot with you Fujis?

    • @tgold94
      @tgold94 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DanBaileyPhoto Yes let me know what the rep says that would be very helpful! One solution that I think would be a best of both worlds would be if we were able to select what settings we want C1-7 to apply.
      For example I could set C1 to "Bird Mode" and have AF tracking, multi metering, etc. and then C2 could be "Portra 400" where I deselect the camera setting options and only select the image options which would be classic chrome +2 shadow -2 highlight something along those lines but the global photometry, auto iso, etc. would still apply.
      Not sure how difficult that would be to implement on their end but I personally enjoy shooting travel/street photography mainly. So when I'm out and about I shoot JPEG+RAW with different "recipes" from FujiXWeekly depending on the lighting or environment I'm in. So with the x100V I was able to quickly swap to whichever film recipe I was feeling that day without having to worry about the other camera settings such as photometry or auto ISO changing too (maybe I wanted to shoot spot metering with one recipe for a specific situation and realize I like how it looks with another b&w recipe, now I'd need to change the photometry twice to do so)
      Overall it's not the end of the world and definitely a little bit niche, but it's interesting how it used to be this way and with the updated cameras its no longer possible, especially since for some people (especially those who prefer to shoot JPEG) its a big selling point of the Fuji line up

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I'll be curious to see what the rep says. I agree, with technology, there are always advancements, but sometimes you run into frustrations when a previous method no longer works exactly like it did on the older model/version. Same with software, computers, phones, etc...
      Here's my personal workaround. I never use the photometry setting. I base exposure on the LCD screen and histogram, and use the EV +/- dial to adjust my exposure when shooting in Aperture Priority. The result is that I have no need to switch between multi, center and spot. I explain here in this video: th-cam.com/video/FSxxQ4RwCYk/w-d-xo.html

    • @tgold94
      @tgold94 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DanBaileyPhoto I'll check it out thanks! Photometry was just an example though, another example was I had set some auto ISO settings on my own after getting the camera, and later saw a YT video and decided to try those auto ISO settings, the issue was I had to now update the auto ISO settings for every other custom preset I had which was a little tedious

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea, I totally get it. Your example could potentially apply to any number of other settings, whether they're specific IQ, AF or Shooting settings. Regarding ISO, I never use Auto ISO. I just spin the ISO dial as needed. I've always found that that to be a quick solution, and since it's tied to the dial, it never interferes with any other settings, or Custom setting issues. But again, this could happy with other settings as well.

      Hi Claire, how long a time frame is it when this happens? I know that if you don’t use the camera for a long time period, like a few months l, then it will revert, because the internal battery that controls memory will only last so long. When it’s depleted, the camera will revert back to the original factory settings. However, if this is happening in a much shorter time frame, then it’s a different issue. Let me know how it is between uses when this happens.

    Hi Dan CAN YOU TELL ME WHY ( FILM SIMULATION ) DON'T APPLY USING RAW ?

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gatson - When you shoot RAW, the film sims that was used for the shot DOES apply; it's stored in the image metadata. However, when you upload the image in most photo software, (LR/PS/CI, Luminar, etc...) it's the app that causes the problem, not the camera. That's because most photo programs will discard the in-camera color profile in a RAW file and assign it's own default color profile. It can't do this with a JPEG, because the film sim colors are "baked" into the JPEG image file.
      However, once you open the RAW file in your software, you can assign a new color profile, and many of these titles I mentioned above have the Fuji film sim profiles included, so you can effectively add the same one back, or else choose a different film sim look. Since the actual Fuji film sims are proprietary trademarked color profiles, the versions inside the software are not 100% exact, but they're usually pretty close.
      The only software that lets you add/change the actual 100% accurate film sim is FujiUJIFILM X RAW Studio, which is the same as doing an in-camera RAW conversion, but on the computer.
      Does all this make sense?

      Kevin, on the X-T5, you can indeed save most of the focus and camera parameters, like metering mode and focus mode to a customer setting along with your regular JPEG film recipe. Basically anything in the image quality, focus, and shooting settings menus can be saved or added to an existing custom setting.
      In addition, if you're shooting with one of your recipe-based custom settings, and you want to change something, like a focus or camera setting, and have those be added to your existing customer setting, and you would want to enable the "auto update custom setting" which is the setting just below "edit save custom setting" in the IQ menu. When this is enabled, while shooting in a custom setting, will be permanently added or updated to that setting. If auto update custom setting is not enabled, then when you turn the camera off and back on, or switch to another setting, then those changes you just made will not remain. Does this make sense, and does it answer your question?

But it still doesn't fix the problem of making a focus or metering setting to suit the moment, switching to another "look", but in the process, the focus setting I just made is lost when I switched to the new look.
      What would solve this, is if they had 7 custom IMAGE settings, and also 7 CAMERA settings. Then when you changed to a different LOOK, you wouldn't lose whatever focus and metering settings you needed in the moment. And if you entered a different situation requiring different focus and metering settings (different use-case), you could select that setup without interrupting the JPEG look you were just enjoying. Not sure how to make feature requests to fujifilm, but this is how I see them solving it, if it matters to them
