Creature Feature: Gray Fox

Two gray foxes will join the Museum’s menagerie of live native Ohio animals in the all-new "Ralph Perkins II Wildlife Center & Woods Garden - Presented by KeyBank," opening Labor Day weekend 2016. Gray foxes are one of the only canines that can climb trees-a fact that inspired the young foxes’ names. Buckeye and Ash were born in captivity and hand-raised in Minnesota. The pair have been bonding with their caregivers and getting familiar with their new home since July.

Will gray foxes harm cats? I have cats and foxes are beginning to show up in the neighborhood for the first time. Many cats seem to be missing and this is not a coyote area.

They are not a danger to cats. My cats keep an eye on the 2 gray foxes that live in my yard, but mostly they ignore one another.

I have a whole family living on my back deck. There is a cheeky squirrel that always runs up to them and runs away. Birds also fly close to them when they’re on the deck. They won’t even attack these small prey animals. They are very calm. Red foxes may attack though.
