I grew uo watching him on the Ozzie and Harriet show and followed his career. I was heart broken when he died in a plane crash .
RIP RICK
IT IS SO ABOUT HIM!!!!!!! Such a story behind this great song. Ricky was one of the original teen idols, appearing with his real life parents on the Ozzie and Harriett Show on TV in the early 60's. He also was a heck of a singer and had several hits while a part of that show, like "Traveling Man" or "Hello, MaryLou"...anyhow, in later years fans would demand he sing all his old songs and kind of disdain his new stuff. This is Ricky's answer to that and his frustration about playing only his oldies......
Yes, I remember it all. Ozzie and Hariet was one of my favorite TV shows when I was a kid.
The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet ran from 1952 to 1966 on TV. But it was a radio show for years before it went on TV. At first Ricky and David were portrayed by child actors. After about 4 years the real Ricky and David started playing themselves. Rick started singing rock and roll around 1957 and had many hits before the 1960's started. Poor Little Fool, It's Late, I Believe What You Say, I've Got a Feeling, Lonesome Town, Waitin' in School, many, many more BEFORE the 1960's. Travelin' Man and Hello Mary Lou were on the same single, never separate as so many mistakenly believe... Mary Lou went to #9, NOT #1, the flip side Travelin' Man was #1.
Rick is often dismissed as a nepo baby or a lightweight, but he always had the very best backup musicians and chose songs by the best writers of his day. He was an excellent performer and imo he was one of the best of his generation.
blessed to have seen and met him
Rick Nelson got the last laugh..Garden Party was a big Top Ten hit and a Gold Single ❤
Nice. Ricky Nelson placed 54 songs on the charts during the peak years of his career. He is one of the unheralded founders of rock'n'roll, releasing such classic tunes as "I'm Walkin'", "A Teenager's Romance", "Poor Little Fool", "Lonesome Town", "Travelin' Man", and "Hello Mary Lou".
Mike, I'm familiar with most of these songs, but it's hard for me to think of him in the category of rock'n'roll, his songs are all pretty mellow, like his personality. (Well, maybe "I'm Walkin" was a bit rockish..)
@@SK-lk3iu Not true. His albums, particularly on the Imperial label, were filled with rockers, as well as his soft ballads. You need to grab his reissued albums on CD.
@ OK, thanks.
Yep. For a quick taste check out his cover of "Summertime".
Ricky Nelson was singing about his comeback after being a teen idol a decade earlier.
well, you're sort of correct, except that he was Rick Nelson. Not Ricky.
RIP. RICKY💔
I grew up watching him grow up on tv and when he started singing on the show. Great singer with some wonderful songs. Saw the tv series this past year, it was wonderful to reminisce those moments.
celebs who were talked about were JOhn George, Chuck Berry, and Elvis
He was a teen idol, to be sure, but he’s one of those guys that just kept getting better looking as he grew older. He really was gorgeous. But also hugely talented. Got to see him at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Michigan, in the 70’s. Also assisted one of his sidemen get a replacement guitar due to a mishap on the tour. That was very cool.
I loved the line "can't please everyone so you got to please yourself" I used to sing it to my mom and it drove her crazy.
😂😂
There is quite a story behind this song. Rick Nelson was a HUGE teen idol in the late 50's early 60's, singing the simple bubble gum songs of that era. Fast forward to 1972 when as a grown man of 32, he went to a 'Garden Party'(Madison Square Garden) and tried to play the songs that had made him a success many years earlier. When Ricky Nelson was last 'in public', he was a clean-cut teen, now he was a 'long haired' man, thus the line, "When I got to the Garden Party, they all knew my name but no recognized me, I didn't look the same"
The concert appearance was anxiously anticipated, thus references to 'everyone was there'. John Lennon (Yoko brought her Walrus), Over in the corner much to my surprise (Howard Hughes), Opened up the closet door and out stepped Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry).
So, when he says the line, "So if you gotta play a garden party, I wish you a lot of luck but if memories was all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck", he referring to 'I played them all the old songs thought that's why they came' and to put it kindly, it didn't work. Relistening knowing the back story only makes it better!
he got booed off the stage at madison square garden. the fans wanted to hear his 1950s songs and not the new material that he was playing. this song was his rebuttal.
former Buck owens steel player Tom Brumley played on this song
saw he live in hemet ca a couple of months before the plane crash. big fan for years have all of his records
Haven't heard this in years (I loved it way back when it was released, but it got lost in my memory along the way).
James Burton was his lead guitarist on the old Ozzie and Harriet show and on all his early hits. He later became Elvis' lead guitarist and is highly regarded.
Based on what actually happened to Ricky Nelson. He was playing at Madison Square Garden. But he had long hair and a beard and looked nothing like his 50s teen idol days. He was singing his hit songs but nobody wanted to hear them and was booed off the stage.
You are right. This is what happened. At 75, I remember Ozzie & Harriet when Ricky was a kid. He went from youngest show status sorta like Beaver until he began singing. Then he was the star of the show. His fans generally hated his hippie type years.
I thought the crowd didn't want to hear his new songs.
@@dusty4835 It was an oldies package show and the audience had expected him to play his early hits not this new country rock stuff. And John Lennon and Bob Dylan actually were there.
@@dusty4835 Yes, the lyrics say ' If all I sang were memories then I'd rather drive a truck'.
@@danielparsons2859 I agree with him...for memories we have records.
What a Legend!
I lied most of what Ricky Nelson did, but "Garden Party" was my favorite. Of course I am old enough to know who all those mentioned were, but the message is truth. Than you Harri, Rickey was another one that left us too soon!
Ricky? Rickey? No. By this time, he was known as Rick Nelson, grown up singer/songwriter/musician.
He has identical twin sons ....The Nelsons and they were big in the late 80s/esrly 90s. Give them a lisren. ❤
I grew up watching him as a kid on TV until he grew into adulthood. He has a daughter that is an actress and his twin sons were popular singers back in the 90s. He came from and produced his own talented children. He was one of the early Rock and rollers.
Ricky was a teenage idol & even did a song about that. he had several hit tunes (all of which i still like), but like many other American acts, he was blown out of the water by the British Invasion. IMHO, he was a crucial part of the early rock'n'roll scene. "Travelin' Man" would be a good one to check out
I had a friend who was their that night and he told me what happened was while Ricky was singing their was an issue in the crowd and security was removing a few people and the crowd started to book and Ricky thought it was aimed at him
no, they booed Rick because they wanted little Ricky.
Yes, he was a super star as a teen, but life changes. Too bad his ended in that plane crash. There was a whole lot of fabricated rumors and bull shit surrounding that crash. He was a talent I'll always remember. I still sing those songs
Ricky was a big fan of Bob Dylan and did many wonderful covers including She Belongs to Me (referenced in the song). It turned out Dylan was a big fan of Ricky Nelson as well. Dylan pushed Ricky at this stage of his post teen idol career to write his own songs. This was his first and was a huge hit.
RICK....RICK....RICK...&^%$#, stop calling him that little boy name!
From the 1972 album, " Garden Party," the true story of Ricky being booed off the stage at MSG after playing his older hits. Backed by The Stone Canyon Band, this was his only country rock album.
Best known for his wholesome image and shyness, he first became popular on his family's hit TV show, " The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet ".
His smooth, tenor voice was addictive to us young girls, and he had multitudes of hits.
He references John Lennon as the Walrus, and George Harrison as Mr Hughes in the great tune. The great guitars, including a steel guitar, the drums and a wood flute, are perfect with Rick's vocals. Made it to Number 6 in the US and Number 1 in Canada. Great message. Great reaction Handsome Harri ❤❤ Great pick Belena👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
not RICKY! He left that guy behind at the malt shop. No more crewcuts, no more songs about teenage dolls, Rick Nelson in 1972 was a grown man with his own family.
My favourite Ricky Nelson songs are: It’s Up To You, Fools Rush In, Never Be Anyone Else But You, My Rifle My Pony and Me, Cindy, Glory Train and Thank You Lord.
I was 15 and at this show with my older brothers, billed as ‘A Rock and Roll Spectacular featuring Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley Bobby Rydell, etc
Playing their oldies hits. When Ricky Nelson got on stage he looked completely different from his teen idol years and after 1 or 2 of his old songs he started to play his new material. People were expecting his old hits and started booing unmercifully. He then walked off the stage!
people wanted little Ricky, but they got Rick, a grown man singing his own songs.
U missed a lot of clues ...Yoko brought her walrus....Dillon...Jonny b goode.lol😊
The Beatles and British invasion mujsic are what killed Rick's musical career, among manh others. In 6 months after Rick died in that god- awful plane crash New Years Eve 1985, in summer 1986, I saw Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in concert. In the middle of the show, Dylan stopped everything, the crowd became quiet. He announced he'd like to pay tribute to an old friend of us all and HIS friend, who had passed away, who did his songs and whom he admired since he was a teen. He sang for us a specialallad Rick Nelson did, called Lonesome Town, with Petty and the band backing him. They treated him like we had lost Elvis' little brother, [whoch in effect he really was] and the crowd went nuts, loved it. Rick was one of my idols when I was a little boy, BEFORE the Beatles, and is a part of why I became a music teacher. He had such a smooth voice that could rock out or sing the prettiest ballad. Too many people categorize him only with Hello Mary Lou and Traveling Man. Sad and lazy on their part. To have Bob Dylan salute him like this means Rick was way more important than we give attention to. He broke ground on the future country rock sound of the Eagles with his own Stone Canyon Band, writing his own songs. The band included future Eagle Randy Meisner playing bass for him and he sang the high harmonies. Gee i wonder where the Eagles got the idea for their music? Hmmmm... But Rick never gets credit for that...sad...His father and band, in 1935, Ozzie Nelson and His Orchestra, as they were being called, had a hit with "And Then Some", which was number one for one week on the U.S. pop singles chart. Rick had 2 number one hits...Poor Little Fool [1958] and Travelin Man [1961]...Rick's twin sons Matthew and Gunner Nelson, known as thr band "Nelson" had a #1 in 1990 "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection. " This was the first time a family had a number one hit across three generations. The people in that audience at Madison Square Garden had no f-ing idea how talented the whole family was, they only knew about the TV show and the Ricky clean cut guy with the suit on. Hiss mother Harriet was a big band singer and actress, friend swith may in Hollywood, close friend of Ginger Rodgers. [Here we go again "Ginger Who?"..sad...sad...just sad...]. his duaghter Tracy Nelson is an actress, and I'd tell her to her face I've still got a crush on her. [She was funnier than hell playing the rich Valley Girl on a TV Series Square Pegs in the early 1980's].
Thank you enormously for sharing all of this and taking the time to type it here ❤❤❤
Wonderful information Thomas. He was definitely taken from us way too soon. 💔
Watched Ozzie and Harriett show every week, the show ended with Ricky singing a song. Ozzie had been a Big Band Leader. Ricky's daughter played a nun on The Father Dowling show. Ricky had a role in Rio Bravo with John Wayne and Dean Martin. Ricky and Dean did a song in the movie.
I watched that movie so many times with my father. Great movie, and I really enjoyed the duet with Rick and Dean.
His experience with fans expectations, not wanting change, a low key version of Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival, when he went *ELECTRIC*
True story. It was a 50's music revival at Madison Square Gardens. hence the name, Garden Party. He was into country music then and played some of his new music. He went home that night and wrote this song.
No problem Ronny!
My dear old dad (God rest his soul) grew up watching Ricky Nelson on TV. He used to like this song, too. We’d hear it when it came on the “oldies” radio station. Thanks for playing it. I’d never heard this live version. You can tell these guys are old pros.
Thanks for the reaction Harri. As the previous comments mentioned, Rick did write this song about his experience performing at Madison Square Garden in 1971. It was a Rock N Roll revue and the audience didn't hide their disappointment when Rick showed up no longer looking like Ricky Nelson from the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet but instead took the stage looking like a long haired hippie. "Yoko brought her Walrus" did refer to Yoko Ono and John Lennon who were in attendance and "Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes, wearing his disguise" was George Harrison who used the alias "Hughes" when he traveled. His children made a documentary on their father in 2005 called "Ricky Nelson Sings". I would highly recommend it. You see how talented he really was and his journey from child star, teen idol, husband, father, rock star and finally his tragic end. His sons (Gunner, Matthew and Sam Nelson) also sing a version of this song for their father at the end which is really beautiful. 👏💖
This is my favorite Ricky Nelson song. I love the laid back groove, the guitars, Ricky’s vocals and the harmonies. This got tons of airplay & was a big hit for him. So, perhaps he got the last laugh out of the situation (not that he was seeking it out). Thanks very much for this gem of a request, Belen, and as always to Harri for another wonderful reaction.
Glad you enjoyed it Ian.
This whole album had that same laid-back groove. I loved it. I had the album when I was 15 in 1977.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
but it's NOT a RICKY Nelson song. Geez, 50 years later, people still call him by the name he was known as when he was a kid on a sitcom. The very grown up RICK Nelson struggled most of his life to be taken seriously as a singer and songwriter.
Ricky died too young in a plane crash. His twin sons are talented and followed in his footsteps, singing and playing guitar. His daughter is a good actor.
I haven't heard this song probably since the 70's! I used to have the biggest crush on him also. 😊😊
He was so hot…we swooned as teenagers 😂❤
Always loved Ricky Nelson and he was such a heart throb to a lot of young girls and was on The Ozzie and Harriet show with his brother David who looked a lot like him, but not quite. Thank you Belen and Harri.
Cynthia, when I graduated from college my friend surprised me with a cake that had one of my favorite photos of Ricky Nelson on it because I was such a fan. He was gorgeous...and of course, talented! 😍
@ that sounds awesome. What a nice friend.
Excellent song…it’s a true story! Referencing John and Yoko and George. His concert at MSG. great message and we swooned over him as teenagers ❤❤❤❤ thank you Belen and Harri 🎉🎉🎉
So happy you enjoyed it Dee. Rick was an absolute doll!! 😍
It's weird that your are doing this song which has popped into my head in recent days. I'm 65 years old. I was about 12 when I heard this song on a PanAm 707 flight going to Hawaii. I never had the record. The song literally just popped into my head. So, some 50 years later, I'll hear it again...
My favorite is the hen he teamed with dean martin in Rio Bravo and sand I think the name was my rifle, my pony and me or something like that. But I like all his music.
Words of wisdom
Good analysis. He did change quite a bit from his earlier stuff. Both styles were great
He's got a great voice and as a kid I remember "Ozzie and Harriet" the tv show he and his family was on
You got it right man
He played an oldies show at Madison Square Garden and the crowd did not like what he had become and how he had evolved. A sad song and ultimately a sad life.
Sad life? Not really, not anymore than typical for aging teenage idols. Tragic ending? Yes.
The story that I heard about this song is that later in his career a very popular celebrity invited him to a garden party. He was really excited because he was thinking that he had become a has been. So he was pleased for the opportunity to hang out with the A crowd again.
But when he showed up to the party he learned that he wasn't invited as a guest but as the entertainment. And everyone in attendance only wanted to hear the old music that he was sick of playing.
They wanted him to sing his songs from the 50's and early 60's and not his new stuff on his comeback trail.
Very nice Belen, thanks to you and Harri for this, now I will quietly remove this from my 'for Harri' list😂
@clint6872 😂 I'm late to the party so I was just happy there were a few of my favorites that have not been reacted to yet. Glad you enjoyed it.
This is the good stuff.
In addition to John (I Am the Walrus) and Yoko he also references Chuck Berry (Johnny B Goode) and George Harrison, aka Mr Hughes, who was planning to do a cover album of Bob Dylan songs. The concert took place at Madison Square Garden hence the garden party theme.
There was a rock and roll revival concert at Madison Square Gardens. John Lennon was the featured guest performer. When Ricky Nelson performed his classic hits, the crowd started booing him. A lot were too young to know who he was.
Ricky Nelson stayed at home, Rick Nelson showed up - long hair, bell bottoms, electric guitars, with his Stone Canyon Band. Teen idol Ricky Nelson died, country rock pioneer Rick Nelson came and shook them all up.
"Yoko brought her walrus..." Guess John Lennon came to the show.
"Mr. Hughes in Dylan's shoes wearing his disguise". Reportedly George Harrison used Mr. Hughes as an alias when checking into a hotel. So George Harrison was also at the show in disguise.
This was from an unfortunate time for Ricky. The comments below describe the situation on which the lyrics of this song were based. He was much more talented than people realized. He had become far more than the teen idol that was his start in music.
so let's give him the respect he deserves as RICK Nelson.
His plane crashed in my hometown of DeKalb, Texas. I will never forget that day. So sad
There is another great cover version of this song by John Fogerty !
This song is a true story of what happened.at a concert when he changed his music a bit. Same happened to Bob Dylan. what I hadn't noticed before his his reference to Yoko bringing the Walrus. So she and John were there?
💖💖💖
He references singing "She Belongs To Me", a Bob Dylan song Ricky had a hit with a few years before this one. Check it out. Thanks Harri, you're the Best!
Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band. Little Ricky never cut any songs by Bob Dylan. It's not the kind of music they heard down at the malt shop.
Love the hat Harri!!!
Ricky had a pretty good string of hits. The story is he got booed at a Rock and Roll revival show. A story after the fact, says the crowd was booing because the cops were arresting a guy for weed.
In this song he mentions "She Belongs to Me". That was a song from 1969. It was a great cover of a Bob Dylan song and only made in the number 33 in the charts. So maybe he was feeling a little underappreciated in his current career.
Speaking of which, "She Belongs to Me" is my favorite song from Ricky.
@@debjorgo Ricky? Or Rick? Did the crewcut teenager actually record Bob Dylan songs?
@@ronfowlermusic Story was, when Bob heard Rick's version of his song, he called him up to congratulate him. He liked it. Bob was a fan of '50s Rock and Roll. I'd bet he called him Ricky when he talked to him.
@@debjorgo no, Rick did not like that name. His daughter Tracy has said so. The only person that got away with calling him Ricky was Carl Perkins. He loved Carl Perkins. Carl could have called him Doggy Breath and got away with it. Sure, he was known as Ricky on the tv show, among friends, he was always Rick. Even that leather guitar cover he used said "Rick".
@@ronfowlermusic I doubt Bob knew any of that. And I would bet Rick would not have corrected him. I was around when Ricky Nelson was all over the radio myself. I guess that's why I think of him as Ricky.
Not trying to make a point but my Greatest Hits CD says Ricky on the cover but has Rick as the album artist. I had to buy "She Belongs to Me" as a mpeg file. It wasn't on the greatest hits set I had. It says Rick Nelson on the cover but lists Ricky Nelson as the album artist.
It was the anniversary of the fatal plane crash a few days ago. RIP Ricky.
RIP Rick.
What's up buddy this is Bobby wojo got a great song and video for you it's Cinderella (- shelter me) you should enjoy I will be looking out for it
This is a live performance, and it's pretty good. But, the studio version is a bit quicker....better.
John Wayne didn't do musicals, but here are Ricky and Dean Martin, uncool dudes being cool. th-cam.com/video/_MXcL1F3OMs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=T0kr_CFxr3Tcv_qb
Thank you for providing that scene from the movie. I had forgotten how good it was, and also that Walter Brennan sings in it, too.
He died so soon after this. What a shame.
this tape is running slow the song is much faster
Love your channel, but what's with the hat dude? Did you move to Russia?
🤣
Bobby wojo again have you reacted to AIRBORNE. Yet? The song too much, too young, too fast video you will swear it's from the most popular rock band ever
This song brings back memories.. I was young back then and I do remember it. IDK about that Hat Harri LMAO!!! :)
Nice hat! Its in the low 20s here in ohio so I get it!
