Time for some spy jazz! When I got my upright bass earlier this year, this was one of the themes that I was so excited to be able to play on it! The bassline in this song is just so wonderfully bluesy and groovy, and it's a lot o fun to really lay into it on upright!
This is the first of several Team Galactic-related themes that I plan to cover as part of the Year of Sinnoh. Team Galactic is probably my second favorite evil team, right behind Team Plasma of Unova! I think that Cyrus' vision and demeanor does most of the heavy lifting as far as establishing Team Galactic goes, as I always found that the grunts and Commanders (with the exception of Charon) weren't super well developed characters in the games, and were a bit forgettable. However, Cyrus is just such a cool commander that he makes up for a lot of that! Plus, a lot of the music associated with Team Galactic is so excellent - another plus in my book!
For this arrangement, I explored a few ways of tackling this theme, and eventually settled on a Pink Panther-esque "spy jazz" kind of feel. I was really inspired by Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments", and I borrowed a lot of elements from that, including some clustered horn voicings and soli texture! This original tune is pretty short (loop is about 40s long), so I lengthened my arrangement by adding some solos over a nice minor blues, and writing a shout chorus to add onto the tune!
You also might notice the trumpet in this video - this is my first time playing trumpet in a TH-cam video! I recently got my own trumpet, and have been practicing it for the past month or so, and man, it is probably the hardest instrument I have ever picked up. A lot of the instruments that I learn are made easier since they're part of a family of instruments I already play (eg: bass clarinet is part of the single-reeded woodwind family, so it was easy to pick up!) Trumpet, on the other hand, is my first foray into the world of brass, and it is so so different from anything that I've played before. Brass reminds me a lot of weightlifting, in that progress does come consistently after tiring out your muscles and letting them recover. I'm studying with a teacher right now, but I'm certain it'll be a while before my trumpet range expands where I want it to - and that's okay! This is a great challenge, and it's really testing my abilities of learning new instruments. I don't know many people who can play both woodwinds and brass at at least an intermediate level, but I hope to be among them someday! It'd be great for expanding the pallete of instruments I can use in videos!

Besides the fact that saturn will forever be my childhood pokemon crush, the story around team galactic was just amazing and very well told! Also the way cyrus just disappeared creeped me out a bit, but in a positive way..
And of course, they had AMAZING themes in their base, battle etc! 💕✨

Really enjoyed this one! Brought back a lot of memories with this epic theme that doesn’t get a lot of attention even amount Gen 4 enthusiasts! It’s so cool to see someone take often-forgotten themes like this and putting so much heart(gold) and soul(silver) into them!
I would LOVE to learn French Horn someday but that one is going to be super super hard I'm sure haha
insaneintherainmusic - Well, in all honesty, if you can play trumpet you can essentially play any brass instrument with relative ease. I know it works the other way around; my first instrument was French Horn, I played it all through middle school and high school while I basically never touched a trumpet. Now, using what I learned while playing French Horn in concert band, I am able to have effective private lessons with a couple of young trumpet players; all I basically had to do to transition to trumpet so I could teach it was just look up the fingerings. The basic principles of playing brass (embouchure, breathing, etc.) translate across the board, the only exceptions being slightly different fingerings (or in the case of trombone slide positions I guess) and a bit of a learning curve getting used to the different mouthpiece size.

Its been a few days i haven't been able to comment so sir insaneoftherain sorry if you didn't see this-
Nothing compares to the inexplicable joy of me getting out of bed (on Sunday I'm in Japan) and opening up youtube in hopes of you posting. The internet is slow so while I wait I go downstairs and fire up the switch for some shiny hunting, and the ds for some dppt. I am currently stuck in this weird-not having furniture phase because I was supposed to move back in February but due to the state of the world they took almost all of our stuff except my furniture so I have been living off of cereal, Nintendo and youtube. As youtube opens I see the thumbnail of you holding the trumpet. I literally could not watch it fast enough. Another thing I should mention, I have been playing trumpet for 8 years so it means so much to me. I have met all of my friends being in jazz groups or in the school band. I hope this is not a one time thing or how long you have been playing but I could see you doing some great things with the dppt ost with the trumpet. Your music (and some others including 8bit big band, the consouls etc.) is literally the backing track of my life. I think the entire world just needs to take a step back, chill, and just soft reset for a better try next time. Good luck to the rest of the world and thanks for reading if you did :)

This arrangement pretty much includes everything I love about Jazz into one song: smooth bassline, a snare with brushes, and lovely harmony between a trumpet (sounds great!!) and the saxophones. Killed it with this one, Carlos! And I can't say I've ever seen a Pikachu mute before.
