From 1962 until 1965 I lived in Istanbul , my late husband was with the US Air Force TUSLOG Det. 29 I often take a Virtual Tour because I miss this beautiful City ! It was a very interesting time in History. I watched the Missles return from Cuba to go back to the USSR .Then Beirut Crisis, then Cyprus Crises, then Berlin Crises. Lived through 2 Earthquakes and other Unrest. We made some wonderful Turkish Friends. I'm too old now to return to Istanbul, but I always dream of this beautiful City !

Karakoy to the bottom of Istiklal Street is walkable, but it's uphill. And up a very steep hill. Alternatively you can catch the funicular tunnel tram from near Galata Bridge up to the bottom of Istiklal Street.
