      Dirtmaid Thanks for that! Chasing tornadoes is just something I've wanted to do since I was a kid, for some reason ha, and I figure that I'm going to be out there anyway so we try to give people a head's up whenever we can since there usually aren't too many people close enough to know exactly where these things are at.

      Dirtmaid Always! I'll be posting all of my chases this season (I stayed away from TH-cam until last year) and I will also be doing webcasts over various things so hopefully you'll dig it. I'm also on FB, Twitter, and I have a website as well so I plan on being much more active publicly this year as opposed to previous seasons where I preferred to stay more stealthy. Again, thanks for the kind words.

    As a mother, When warnings are out I call all my adult children and tell them to be careful and take cover. Your poor momma! Lol. Thanks for the calmness, the clean language, and the actual sounds. Subscribed to you because of it. You and Pecos Hank...the best. Be careful, tho. AND watch out for the excitable storm chasers driving all fast and crazy and not paying attention to the traffic.

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm trying to get caught up on comments and I want to say thank you for the praise! Hank is a big inspiration of mine and I really appreciate such a comment.
      I haven't been active for awhile and honestly planned on just leaving my channel alone but the support has been pretty awesome so I'll be back at it this season. And I make a point to not act insane when I'm chasing. I like to make content anyone can watch so I'm happy you enjoy it and keep an eye out for new content soon.

    I can't get enough of Tornado videos... Yours is very interesting

  • @southwestontario
    @southwestontario 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    That reminds me of the tornado I got caught in driving, last year. Very scary, even though it was a weak one. The hail was brutal and the wind and rain, caused a total white-out in front of me, at the side and behind my car. Scary!

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ON TARIO Oh wow! I believe it. Often times it's not like some may imagine when you're in something like that but it's more just extreme wind and rain/hail. It may seem like a regular storm and then all of a sudden you're in it without ever seeing it coming. That's why it's always a good idea to never assume anything and make the decision that keeps you safe. I'll admit we probably pushed our luck a bit in the video and I wouldn't recommend people get that close regardless of how strong you think it is. Fortunately we had the benefit of radar data etc and we knew the visual clues that kept us oriented to the actual tornado's center because we only saw the condensation funnel on the ground a few times, first behind us and then again in front of us on the highway when we pulled over on the side of the road to give it a lead on us, the rest of the time it was just intense rain/wind/hail. If you don't have the experience, knowledge, and tools or simply just get caught off guard it would have been easy to drive right into it. Unfortunately we did see vehicles that were blown off the road and flipped (they were okay) from that very thing. Glad you were alright after your situation!

    Rain wrapped tornadoes are the hardest to predict its trajectory when your following it! One of the reasons the El reno tornado was so unpredictable and plus multi forces dont help either.
    Good job mate 👍👍

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      tony machaveli Yeah that definitely made it tricky. Part of our problem was that we had such a clear view of what appeared to be the tornado but it was actually just a satellite vortex. I saw the rain curtains wrapping around the actual tornado and that's when we realized it was pretty much on top of us so obviously we took our escape route and stuff. Fortunately it was early in its life cycle so it wasn't terribly strong yet. It was strong for sure but not the destructive EF3 It became.

All I try to do is share something I love with other people who may like it. I've even considered making more discussion-based videos and stuff too but we'll see how it all plays out. Matt Furman haha it really was. It was a mess, that's why we took the western area instead of East because we figured we'd have a better shot visually if we were close to the burst point. We were kinda right but it still wrapped up super quickly.

      VirlomiEntreri Yeah we'd much rather see those tornadoes that stay in open fields and don't really do anything as opposed to these that move through towns. Coincidentally my second tornado of this year was on Tuesday about 2.5 blocks from my house.

    Intense footage, Dustin! That one was difficult with how rain-wrapped it was, I was worried about the chasers out there on it.

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It certainly was! We knew that would probably be the case and even getting right up on it we could only see the actual tornado for a few moments when it first touched down. We saw the funnel make contact with the ground right in front of us and, no joke, within just a few seconds it looked like the whole wall cloud came down around it.

      Carolyn Brt Thank you very much. I'm as comfortable as you can be getting close to tornadoes but when it overtook us and we didn't really have an orientation of it for a couple minutes me knew the smart move was to let it pass over us and come back at it from the other side.

      Honestly I just think he didn't think about it. I was riding in the passenger seat so I of course wasn't thinking about it either. There have been some people asking "where the tornado was" and that's what made it sketchy. The tornado actually is never clearly visible and we were overconfident that we were ok. We realized at the last second that there was a tornado within the rain and that's what rolled over us.

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colette' G. Yes they were! We were on them when they first developed near Tupelo, MS and ended up watching them throughout the night until they reached Atlanta, GA and they never lost any steam from when they produced this tornado until pretty much the next day. I'm glad everyone seemed prepared because those were dangerous storms, especially after dark.

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colette' G. I don't blame you. I would've been calling anyone I knew in the path as well. Obviously any one of them were capable of producing tornadoes (most did actually produce tornadoes) but every one of them was putting down large to insanely large hail and dangerous lightning too.

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colette' G. I also want to say thanks for following along! I've been pretty distant from TH-cam with working on my degrees and stuff but with storm season back upon us I'm going to be a lot more active on here and it's awesome to know people enjoy and appreciate it.

    If it is scraping the ground, then does that make it technically a tornado?

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      avenger007007 By definition the circulation must be in contact with the ground so technically it would be a tornado if it was in fact connecting to the surface. A lot of times we'll refer to a very low and usually large wall cloud in slang as "ground scraping" which isn't technically a tornado but if the circulation makes contact with the surface then it is.

    I wonder how much rain is dumped during these Tornadoes

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Joyleen Poortier I'd have to look at the observed rainfall data from these particular storms but a little number crunching can tell you just how much water a storm can drop. So if a storm produces 1" of rain (as measured in a gauge) that would be about one US gallon in a 1'-1' area or on a more fun scale of 1 square mile, 1" of rain would produce 17,378,560 gallons. That's enough to fill 434,464 40-gal bathtubs by the way!

    • @Ozmandius
      @Ozmandius 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im more curious of the amount within close proximity to the tornado versus the rest of thr storm myself. 50% more? A little less?

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      heretic30176 Ok I get what you're saying. I'll see if I can figure it out for you. I know it is only a percentage of what the whole storm itself produced but the areal amounts/rates will be the same as the numbers I gave you before so I'll see if I can figure out some specifics for you.

    What was this tornado rated

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      M Robinson It was rated a high-end EF1 when we were on it in the video. I only worded it "high end" because it was surveyed at 110mph and EF2 starts at 111mph. This was the early stages of the supercell that produced the EF3 in Jacksonville, AL a little later.

    @bobbybaldeagle702 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great footage... BUT there's one thing I don't quite understand. You run in for shelter that was smart. BUT you left your car running??? That not so smart, around here if you'd done that your car would have been gone before you had reached the door, storm or no storm... I'm happy to see y'all got more honest people there... But still why did you leave the car running??? It just don't make sense to me...

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Bobby Baldeagle For one thing, we were right inside looking out so it wasn't entirely unattended. Also, if someone wants to steal a Jeep while literally inside of a rain-wrapped multi-vortex tornado then they need it more than we do lol. Plus it was rigged with GPS that we can track with our phone so unless they figured that out we would just show up and get it back.

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      joe sar Yep. Also, we knew the tornado was just a few seconds behind us and was going to pass directly over us so we wanted to chill somewhere safe for a minute and let it pass so we could come back at it immediately on its West flank (back of the tornado). I didn't necessarily want to deal with the RFD and "ghost train" but we really liked the idea of chasing it from just a few yards behind it instead of a few yards in front of it. Basically we left the keep running because we knew we'd be jumping right back in it and making pursuit.

      Nah, what happened was that we got caught by a larger rain-wrapped tornado. There was never really a clear shot of a tornado but when the rain overran us that was the edge of the tornado (this was further confirmed with radar data, other chasers who shot from farther away, and the post-event damage survey in addition to our observations). When it became clear we weren't going to see the tornado clearly and had perhaps been too aggressive we sheltered to hopefully get a shot from behind it, but after it passed it was never visible anymore and stayed well within the rain (this storm did cycle several times and produced visible tornadoes across parts of Georgia later that night but we decided not to chase farther into the jungle after dark).

    Was that off of hwy 43? Or 78 ?

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Initially, when we were watching the wall cloud move in toward us as the storm started to blow up, we were on hwy 24 West of 43. When we actually saw the tornado we were on 43 and took shelter near the Waffle House. As soon as it passed over us we pursued it from the backside of the circulation on 48 I believe and after being on that road we ended up on 78 eastbound eventually. There were obviously a few times we had to be on various back roads around town but those were the primary roads we used.

      Dustin Knight . I use to live in Hackleburg back in 2011 the year of the super outbreak. I haven't been in that area for a few years now but thought it looked familiar.

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow! I remember that day (as I'm sure everyone does) but I can't imagine living down there during that. I've gone through major outbreaks here (2 March 2012) as well but the 1974 super outbreak was before my time and the 2011 super outbreak spared us up here. Hackleburg was also one of the most hard hit areas too so I imagine that was crazy. We've reviewed that day quite a bit in college.

    Where was the tornado?

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joy Zuegn When we were sitting stationary and the windshield wipers were going right before we said we have to go South that big dark green thing in front of us was the tornado. You can see a horizontal vortex/satellite vortex sticking out of the side of it. We were watching the satellite circulation but when we realized the whole thing was actually a large rain-wrapped tornado we realized we were in a sketchy spot so we tried to get out of it. After that we were inside of it and took shelter, let it pass right over us, and then went into the backside of it. After we left the restaurant or whatever it was it was only 100-400yds ahead of us at any time but as you can see at that point it was completely wrapped up and wasn't visible anymore except by knowing visual clues (wind direction, rain curtains, appearance of suction vortices). We prefer to try to get on photogenic tornadoes in open fields in the plains but that's just not how it works all the time, especially in Alabama.

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Imaginertiophile Actually, in the style of all the 2018 rain-wrapped messes (except Tescott, KS and anything in Wyoming) the tornado is briefly visible across the street from us when we're under the awning. It pokes out of the right side of the RFD clear slot before occluding. From that point we were inside and on the edge of the circulation for the remainder of the video. We knew it was an HP supercell so we got right up into the notch but unfortunately it wasn't the photogenic tornado you may hope for. As a matter of fact, anyone who was on this tornado has similar footage. They don't always look like they do in Twister.

    • @dustinkknight
      @dustinkknight  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were relatively safe. That's a big reason why we took shelter inside. We were watching a little funnel we thought was the developing tornado, but we realized the actual tornado was much larger and concealed within the HP core, which meant we were in a sketchier spot. We could have been more aggressive and possibly gotten a clearer view but once the edge of the tornadic circulation at large overran us we decided to play it safe and let it pass, ultimately to attempt a play from behind it (which didn't work since it was entirely rain-wrapped). Thank you for the concern, we appreciate that.
