Follows the great design from many years ago by the Halacy's, 30/60 cooker... very nice...

That's good to hear, thank you for taking the time to watch 🙏 I made it up as I went along, and (surprisingly 🤣) it works really well! Stoked 🥳

@@ReclaimDesign Great minds think alike! The book by Beth and Dan Halacy is "Cooking with the Sun" and is almost always available here in the U.S. on eBay, likely there too :) They suggest 4 reflectors, and if I weren't too busy collecting cookers I'd take the several I made 20 years ago, and make the reflectors overlap hinge-wise so the last one would become a cover... So many cooker plans, too little time :(

Thank you Jamie 🙏🏻 Fire warnings in Portugal today so we're going to have a stab at making a quiche in the solar oven 😅

Took longer but free to cook so that’s a win in my book. Would imagine some slow cooked pulled pork would be good in there. 🤤

Definitely, free is a win in this economic climate!

Great video and nice build, but I am surprised at the use of Styrofoam because it gives off toxic fumes when heated. I would pull if out and use either Rickwool insulation or wool. I fabricated an articulated angle position arm that allows me to adjust the angle of the reflector lid. I also included an analog thermometer inside to monitor temperature.

Thanks Erick. We were trying to keep the costs on the build to an absolute minimum. We're hoping that having covered the surface of the polystyrene with reflective material, it will work to bounce heat back from the polystyrene without issue. Apparently polystyrene can break down at temperatures above 200°C, and most solar ovens reach temperatures close to 150°C, which I think is the case with ours as we did not detect any fumes, softening of the polystyrene or anything like that during usage, but we appreciate you letting us know. Life really is a never-ending learning curve isn't it! Your articulated arm sounds fantastic. And a thermometer would be a great addition to our oven, but again, we wanted to spend as little as possible on the build.

I watched with interest at the position on the top reflector. It seems that you are not getting the benefit of a sun multiplier from its positioning.. I look forward to more of your solar oven stuff..

The muffins baked so we're stoked 😂 I think the only thing we could do differently if we built another solar oven is lower the overall height of the box a bit so that the front casts less shadow. However it's a trade off - we wanted to be able to fit pots in the oven and cook larger items and so opted for a deeper oven.
