he made this to save his freind who says he needs drugs to perform/create. he made the song and sings this deeply to show his friend that he see's his pain but addiction makes him a worse version. his friend doesn't want to be sober all the money in the world can't help but he poured himself into this song and this performance to cry out to his friend to pull him back from the edge. he himself is not an addict but he just wants to save his friend and peer.

i was affected by the lyrics Mother never murdered drinking's patern even tho 3 sons had come. We are all grown men now but mother never murdered drinking's pattern even tho old age has come. I wish Jesus would whistle at my mother or Mary would whisper. But the past is done. She wants what she wants, she wants what she wants, she wants what she wants. You should see the lyrics.

Do a search for Munch's "The Scream" painting. Honestly...set a timer and look at it for a full minute, and then watch this reaction again. Some similarities between 1893 artists and 1990's Tool... and all of us experiencing deep angst another 30 years later. Across different ethnic groups. Between people 24 and 64. We're not as different as we think. ...Thank you for an honest reaction that reflects how most of us feel.

You just opened the Pandora's Box. Do not apologize for getting emotional, every tool fan and I've been a fan since the beginning of 1992, every tool fan will tell you that tool is an emotional roller coaster. It is the journey of a lifetime. You will not be disappointed with any of their music. They are Masters of producing deep lyrics and hypnotic, beautiful sonics that are as you said candy to the ears. Maynard's voice is unmatched.

Welcome aboard! I was a teenager when their first album dropped. Even then, when the grunge era was at full throat, I knew they were something special. Sober was their first hit and it resonated so strongly with the extremely angsty, discontented teen that I knew these guys were not just another metal band. They were intelligent (though a lot of metal is) but more importantly, they were looking deep into the human condition and asking those questions that were keeping me up at night. Heck the chorus is "why can't we not be sober" (notice the clever use of the double negative) and "why can't we sleep forever". Very gutsy, powerful stuff.

This song about addiction is especially hard if you know someone that went through it. The first verse is the addict, the second is the addiction, that needs the addict. That’s why you hear him refer to himself as a collective at times saying “we” and the separation of “I” when he switches the perspective. Just an amazing, amazing, performance.

They have so many songs with a decided spiritual or social message, such as 'Right in Two', the two songs 'Parabol' and 'Parabola' that should be played as one song together, ’Lateralus', ’Reflection’ (which is always played along with the songs 'Disposition' and 'Triad', fans throw a fit if you don't play 'the holy trinity' of all 3 songs together ha)), 'The Grudge', the song ’46&2', which is about stepping to the next level of humankind, 'Pneuma', and my fave Tool song of the moment is 'Descending', it's a warning about how we are killing the earth and our own souls and he calls us all to arms, the musicianship of this song is next level!

MrsPenPal you had me crying. I have not cried to this song for a couple of years. You have a gorgeous singing voice, and whilst a non believer I love gospel and the blues; I love any artist whose voice is a true instrument and can communicate authentic emotion; you have it.
May I suggest more Tool of course they are the best. But also A Perfect Circle, live at Red Rocks or live on Leno; both have the same singer as Tool, Maynard James Keenan. Or Mike Patton there are great compilations of his vocal range and he as huge and wonderful vocal range; oh and the Viking Suite an Orchestral piece with singer Einar Selvik, who also sings with Wardruna; Helvegen Live, another great emotional song. Let's not forget Pearl Jam, live MTV.
If you want a good cry Tool, Wings for Marie part 1 and 2, a beautiful tribute to the singers late mother.

Girl, I cried like a baby when I first heard this as well. He tells the struggle that addiction brings sooo well. He is not acting. He IS. Either he has struggled himself with addiction, or he is a brilliant actor, and someone nearby him is struggling. Its so pure. He jumps out from the screen, like in 3d. He grabs you.
Tool is next level. You should do "Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool (LIVE IN CONCERT)" and/or TOOL - Parabola th-cam.com/video/-_nQhGR0K8M/w-d-xo.html

This performance is a manifestation of the pain experienced by people struggling with addiction and it's *meant* to make you emotional.
No need to be sorry, you just got the vibe just right.
The point of art is to convey thoughts and emotions and experience them.

Tool has a way of coming at the human condition that no other band really dares. They challenge the mind and hit the most powerful emotions within us: pain, fear, sadness, anger and love all rolled into their music. Maynard rarely writes lyrics that are superficial (for Tool anyway, Puscifer on the other hand...) and even when it appears inconsequential, there is a double meaning or hidden depth behind those words. Amazingly talented musicians and an incredible wordsmith standing at the front (or the back with Maynard generally - 😂)

Tool to me is the best band in the world and I’m glad to say I’ve been a fan since their first album. Tool songs take you on a journey, you have to listen to Tool because their songs have a meaning which often varies from person to person. Tool songs are often longer and complicated with odd time signatures. The names of songs are words that need to be looked up to define. The band is so great you have a hard time deciding on a favorite song. Songs The Pot, 46 & 2, Schism, The Grudge, Pneuma, Lateralus, Parabol and Parabola, Push it, Vicarious so many great songs!! Try and stay away from videos as images often distract you from the music. I hope to see you react to more Tool!!
    Spiral out!!

Never apologize for the emotions that Maynard and tool bring out. This song. He wrote cause he felt he couldn’t be creative unless he was high but he realized he not fun to be around when he’s high/drunk. So this was his way to vent

It makes me happy you can really be so enthralled. Never stop that, never be afraid to be yourself. There is no shame in being human.

Sober was the first song I heard from Tool, and still remains one of my favorite songs. Can't blame you for the tears, that song itself can be quite gut wretching especially knowing what the song is about. And I swear their live performances of Sober carry more weight than the studio version, especially when Maynard cries out 'WHHHHHY'.

oh no no no no no no. That would be Wings Part 1 & 2. If she struggled with Sober, the poor thing will be a blubbering wreck with Wings. Maynard said he'd never play it live for a bunch of reasons, one of which is that it's emotionally draining for him to sing.
