I came to know that the rainy season typically is from June to October, With September and October the most rainy. In the first week of August I am expecting only short rains. Would that be a correct assumption?

bro, although the climate varies throughout Thailand, you can visit all year round. The best season to visit Thailand is from November till April. I dont think August is a good choice. Its better not to visit Thailand during monsoon. Short rains will also affect your trip. you may not be able to enjoy the trip to its full potential. So, change the dates if you can
