Ive been struggling recently with finding time to do any landscape photography and so im so glad i've found a passion in street photography... id have gone nuts by now else! haha
I met up with local street photographer joel in Birmingham to discover new areas of the city but also to hear how joel finds his shots and what he looks for in a nice street image!

@Daz Shoots Weddings How is it not street photography? I would understand if we set up shots and claimed they were candid, but we didn't, they were genuinely candid and therefore that is street photography. I'm not sure what your definition of street photography is in that case.

Nice one and what a lovely place to go to get some decent pictures, but as a Brummie I would say that! When you decided to go to the Mailbox my heart sunk I thought you are bound to take a shot that I took there years ago but no you walked all over it instead, (that's progress) you won't get far in the Mailbox without being reminded NO PHOTOGRAPHY....well done I enjoyed your time in Brum...

Your street photography reminds me very much of Degas' Ballet paintings..your use of negative space and direction of gaze specifically. Really enjoy your work.

@@GarethDanks that's hilarious. It just comes down to training, experience, and instinct but you've been doing it a lot in your street photos. It's called a triangle of negative space, and would most certainly apply to the photograhy arts as well .

hey thanks for the comment :-) i just watch the histogram tbh.. expose to the right and the darken if necessary in lightroom.. at night ill manually expose tho as it tends to over expose :-)

Gareth you have a wonderful personality for this type of genre. Introducing young Joel was a nice touch and I enjoyed the initiative. If I may give you a slight critique? I think you should give your guests the opportunity to summarise (the last word at the end) and offer them a chance to comment on what they have learnt from you.
I'm from New Zealand and wish i had done street photography whilst I was there.
May I set you a task?
Pair up with a local photographer at locations like, Chester, York, Stratford upon Avon.(yes I've missed heaps of locations) You may think that the metros are where its at but I think the back drops to your architectural history is outstanding.
Subscribers give Gareth a poke to come to your town and spend a day with you with street photography.
hey there! thanks so much for the comment! im glad to hear you enjoyed the video.. im more than happy to act on your suggestions.. ill look into some areas i can visit.. and of course happy to meet up with another photographer. im unsure how that "word" idea would work but im happy to give it a go! I dont think im quite there yet as far as an educator in the genre, im still very new to it and very much learning (as we all are) i wouldnt imagine people learn too much from me just yet haha.. maybe just the motivation to try - and have fun!

Thanks Gareth for the inspiration. Do you use auto IS0? I see its gone up to 2500 in some shots, hard to get that on the fly? Ive just taken up street photography as ive developed tennis elbow and cannot hold a heavy long lens.

It would be great if you did a video on how you edit your black and white pictures. I think that's an important component to the end result of your pictures and you've yet to address that in your videos. Also when you say that you pre focus for example on the ground right before someone will enter a frame which focus point do you use? Do you use your center point? Or do you move your focus point to a lower point or do you focus with the center point and then raise your camera a little bit to recompose all keeping in mind that you're using back button focus. Thanks

12 was probably my favourite, though they were all nice. The mailbox is really nice for photos, I always try and be quick when taking them though, because I'm scared the security guards will kick me out.

Gareth Danks Some folks say that lens might be too slow autofocus wise. Your thoughts?
Depends on the body it’s on mate. About a year ago I’d have agreed with them. I tried it years back and hated it. The new bodies have been updated and now most of the original glass is greatly improved! The xf56 is sooooo much faster than it used to be. (And that’s a slower lens again) it’s not 23f2 fast but it’s a far better lens! Hope that helps 😊👍🏻

Thanks for the excellent video. On a different note I have spoken to you a couple of weeks ago about the Fuji side of things. Did you get rid of the Sony? As I'm about to pull the trigger on the xt3 system but would have to offload the Sony a7iii as I have had problems with it my confidence has gone. Thanks
hey David.. no ill never sell my sony, its too much camera for the money! i dont enjoy using it at all but it gets every job done and i can film with it hand held.. the xt3 is amazing but i wouldnt say as good a camera to the a7iii its just far nicer to use and i adore the image i get from it.. the iso and af also the battery dont compete with the sony! i need both annoyingly! id love to sell it all and get a holiday with the 5k ive spent on it lol

QUESTION: Do you ever take a shot with someone in, even as a silhouette, and wish you'd had an interaction so you could have shown them the shot?

hey michael thanks for watching.. always expose to the right of the histogram but i add a lot of contrast in camera to help me compose the shot.. i alway shoot BW and look for strong lighting! check out my other birmingham vid i explain it better in that mate :-)

a library no.. private property like the mailbox yes technically but they wont prosecute just ask you to leave.. :-)

Street photography is all about capturing candid moments so it would be cheating haha, but would have made it much easier 👍
I take your point, but my take on photography is you're already modifying the scene. Focal length, DOF, post processing, filters, using film simulations or going B+W, not to mention rendering a 3D scene in 2 dimensions. It's all 'cheating' :-). The best 'candid' images I have taken or many we've all seen were done over and over again to get it just right. The vision was there, but it can take some doing to get everything just as you imagine it. It's not about recording a scene and trying to present the scene in the way you want the viewer to perceive it (how it feels.) @@joelfosterfinn

Hey great vid, Gareth. I really like the minimal escalator shots in the mailbox actually.
Just opposite the the entrance theres a flyover with loads of massive coloured pendant lights underneath, really cool space- did you see it? I haven't been back to brum for a couple of years but that location always sticks in my mind. Learning loads from the vids!
