This is beautiful, I grew up in Miami and I am also Haitian. Personally, I never thought Miami or being Haitian was a big deal growing up but as I have aged and learned more about my culture, I have learned to appreciate my city and where my ancestors come from. Thanks for showcasing it and promoting the culture.

This makes me so happy inside. Puerto Rican born raised, in Miami. My main group of friends in high school were Haitian. Still keep in touch with a lot. But life happens. I'm back in Puerto Rico, but this was my life. I once went to a party in little Haiti and actually had some Haitian friends tell me not to go. But I went with my group of Haitian friends that were going and had a blast. It was family. It was unity. I would never move back to Miami. I'm home. But Haitian food, the culture the people I miss so much. Very blessed to have my Haitian family visit me in Puerto Rico now. Kinda looks the same as Haiti. So makes me happy to have them here. Also, Tons of hatians live in Puerto Rico. We took in over 200 Haitian and Dominican refugees this year alone.

I'm so glad I watched this episode. I'm a Southern Black woman that have worked with Haitian, Filipino,Mexican, Puerto Rican,African, Italian, German and an entire host of people in the medical field. Can't wait to visit Little Haiti!
Haiti will rise again one day💪🏾🇭🇹. It’s a shame that Haiti is not talked about in U.S. history. After Haiti gained its independence, Haitians helped the U.S. fight for its freedom and won, and not only did they help the U.S. gain their independence they also helped several other countries like Brazil, Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, and Bolivia. Haiti used to be a strong nation, but slavery was a big source of income for many, and after Haiti fought to abolish slavery the whole white world has hated Haiti ever since. And they’re making Haiti pay for it now.

@@geecheeflow9828there are tons of places. Outside of New York, Florida, Cali, basically the Hotspots of US they are scarce especially in heavy white populated areas. There are no Haitians living in country old Town of Hilton head south Carolina, maybe a few with background but no real haitian ties 😂 no no the Caribbean people are mainly in Florida and New York

This is supposed to be about understanding, celebrating, and embracing other cultures. I don’t understand the need for hateful comments. The Constitution has granted us the right to freedom of speech. However, with any right comes responsibilities. Just because you have the right to say something, doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to say. Among the biggest blights on our society are hatefulness and exclusion. Remember, even Jesus broke bread with sinners.
I love the Guyana one, and watching this one too almost made me cry my wife that passed away last year was half Guyanese and Haitian, and I growing up in South Miami Florida, this made me really emotional oh, it was a good episode. Great work guys

I use to live on East 96th.-&- wintroop st.Brooklyn N.Y when Haitians started moving into East Flatbush (50's years ago) As a African American .It was a amazing time to see them transform old forgotten streets in to new ones..(and open stores to bring light into forgotten places in Brooklyn ❤❤❤❤

I'm black american/Jamaican and growing up in Broward FL I always admired and respected the Haitians. They are one of the most beautiful group of ppl I ever known. They have always shown warmth and treated me like family. Their rich history, culture, language, food and vibes are everything to me. They played a very important part in my life and still do to this day 💯❤️

I have been enamored with all things Haiti through literature and music. When I moved to Miami twenty years ago I discovered Little Haiti driving down NE 2nd Ave. to take my son to school. The shops, the people, the artwork, and the glorious food… such a vibrant and welcoming community.
I live in Miami and this is one of the best things in Miami. The many different cultures. I love my Haitian people one love ❤️

I worked with allot of Haitian people at a Casino in Roomservice here in Connecticut. My friend Leo (I would call him "Leo the Lion 🦁" ) he would bring me in his Haitian cuisine and it was delicious 😋, haven't seen him in years but this video reminds me of his culture and his beautiful personality 😊❤ Thank you!!

I thorough enjoyed this episode. I've never been to Little Haiti or Haiti but there was a sense of authenticity of a REAL Black story that was familiar to me. I have been to Africa so I could follow the connections of food and colonialism. LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

Haitian American born and raised in Miami. Watching this makes me miss my grandmother who was born in Haiti and migrated to America in her young adult days. I swear she could throw down in the kitchen making great Haitian dishes and knew how to make every dish. I would always tell folks that Haitian food is some of the best food you will taste in the entire world.

I am an African and leaved 6 month in haiti at a place called vivimichel was nice . They are good people and i really emjoyed their food. Haitian and African get along very well. Love them so much and they love to danse. They good people.

What a wonderful history of Haiti 🇭🇹. The food looks delicious too
Haitian food is amazing and deserves coverage but I expected this piece to do this exhausting thing that every other piece about Haiti and Haitians in mainstream media does (this is PBS, yet unconsciously perhaps, there wasn't much departure there) and I got served with the same old redundant narrative right from the intro, which prompted me to skim. I long to see a Haiti-related piece that talks of Haiti and Haitians in relation to beauty, rich musical traditions, architecture, breath taking tropical landscapes, amazing revolutionary history, world-renowned paintings and sculpture, pretty traditional clothing, carnival elation, pride. This side of Haitian culture NEEDS to be shown as well. It's high time! When the culinary or cultural traditions of other Caribbean nations or Hispanic nations or whatever nations in their respective geographical sphere are brought up on video, they get that respect. Why can't Haitians get it too? There is beauty in Haitian culture and as in any other community, there are different types of human experiences and standards of living in Haiti as well as in its diaspora. Not everything is about misery, earthquake, busted up buildings, refugee status. This is not to say to ignore the hardships (I am NOT promoting avoidance) but to provide a BALANCED, more diversified portrayal of the Haitian experience in the same way that other cultures receive when they are being discussed. It's funny how I never see other Caribbean islands being systematically portrayed in that manner. Do people not think that these other places don't experience poverty and corruption as well? Do they not migrate? Yet I will never see a foodie episode get the poverty bombing treatment that Haitians automatically get every time the culture is being discussed. There is something very systematic and perverse about the single-minded narrative and imagery of Haitians and it contributes to stigmatization. There's no reason for a foodie episode to unfold like that.

@@SamBrown-pp2fp, You are right. There are no excuses but reasons for that. By daring to be the first to gain its independence and free all the enslaved people, Haiti was defying and threatening a whole economic system. You have to know that, just as capitalism, slavery was an economic system. And anything that questions the very existence of an economic system is seen as a danger and must be eliminated or punished. Therefore, until this day, our country is being punished for putting an end to slavery. The thing is our ancestors were not just content to free Haiti only, they exported our revolution to different other regions in the world, specially in America, where there were still slavery and oppression. I am not going to tell you about the different measures and actions the economic powers at that time took against us in order to make sure that we did not develop as a nation. If you are really interested in knowing more you will have to find out for yourself.

I lived in LIttle Haiti before it was Little Haiti, made some wonderful friends, tasted Griot at around 11 years old and fell in Love! This was late 70's.
