Yeah Bob, "Listening!!!" and real deep transcribing to truly build your jazz language from the masters who created this art form. I am fighting the urge to write them down but no question working one phrase at a time is key. I remember you saying to always transcribe in real time and learn to sing each phrase first then play them. Seems so slow at first but then the ideas go so much deeper. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Bob, I'm fairly new to your VLOGS, and your music, but downloading it like crazy. Watching as many VLOGs as I can. Everyone one I watch becomes a new favorite. But this one really grabbed me since you talk about doing more listening. It's something I tell my students, well, practically every lesson. But I think you've really put it into sharp focus. I am very grateful you are putting out much of this advices, it is highly motivating, and I am a bassist, nonetheless, it works no matter what instrument I play.... or anyone plays. one of my favorite albums is red rodney's "then and now" because it features 3 of my favorite things; chris potter, chris potter playing bebop, and chris potter on alto. he was only 20 when he recorded it. crazy musician

as a drummer, i like to learn licks/phrasings from listening etc, but so often, even though i may have got the thing down accurately, it's just as important 'when' in the bar and the 'context' of where it's applied in music. I make 15 sec instagram clips from my practising, and the 15 sec of a cool chop/fill sounds less interesting without the 15 sec of basic pocket before it, we def need the ying for the yang to work.

I wish I had had your vlog when I was a kid. I might have had a shot at being a player. To be clear, turns out my professional calling is elsewhere, but dang, I could have been making music in the off time. Guess that’s why I’m here now. It’s time to learn to make some great music!

Hey Bob! Thank you for doing these vlogs I'm really enjoying them. I would like to ask you a question about transcribing: When do you consider a transcription to be finished? What do you do after you have gotten all the notes and rhythms right? Do you start to work on a specific thing of the solo or just start working on a new transcription? How do you think transcribed things will show up in playing if they will? Thanks for your time. :)
Hey. I don't know if this already answered or not but here is what I think: I think you can consider a transcription to be finished based on what you really want to get after that transcription. You don't have to transcribe the whole solo but you can transcribe many parts of the solo that you feel like it makes you want to pick up the sax and transcribe. The point of transcribing is to train your ears to synchronize your sound with the pitches of the notes, rhythmic devices and intonation on a certain aspect of the music. After you get the notes and rhythms, you can cooperate it with your own phrases into a certain part of the transcription. You try to find the comfort and tonality that fits your phrase with the transcribed section so you can have more ideas, build vocabulary! Bob has many views about transcription so I highly recommend you to check it out because I think they are all really good nuggets for transcribing!
Thank you for your great posts. Just a simple question: what kind of cd player do you have that allows you so much control over repeating parts of music? Is there the equivalent for playing/repeating on the computer?

I know I'm a bit late to the party. Kid is probably sleeping like a log by now. But if not, try using a constant droning sound. I've had luck with prerecorded motorcycle engine, rain, bus, dryer or even run a noisy fan in the same room(not blowing on him, could get him sick).

By the way.....listening. AMEN. Can't tell you how many times I tell students the same exact thing. How are you supposed to know what you want to sound like, or what player(s) are going to influence you in shaping your own sound, style, etc. if you don't listen......literally, until you just have to take a break. And that should be a rare thing.
