I had a conviction in 2019 to quit and when the "world" shutdown that was literally my way of quitting altogether. Today i'm a Sunday School teacher and I agree with what Mr Makhs said, at times some things are connected to your destiny. I didn't know then, but I believe, outside of my unhealthy relationship with alcohol, God also helped me quit because of the lives connected to my obedience and willingness to quit.

I’m 19 and in university and I never got the alcohol thing and my thoughts were justified after I listen to John F. MacArthur’s series on alcohol. The conclusion I got to is that I can’t drink alcohol solely on the fact that it is marketed as an escape, a source of joy (whether minuscule or not), a way to distress, etc. and to me the problem is that people are trying to find things that only God can give in a bottle. And then there are obvious problems like the actions done when you under the influence and not sober.
P.S I’d really recommend watching John F MacArthur’s series on Alcohol.

I got married almost a year ago, we dated for s very short amount of time but had been talking on and off for 2 yrs. I am a christian whose relationship w God means evrrything, and my husband believes in God and is of the same faith as me and we have gone to the same church for over 30 yrs, however he has not rededicated his life to Christ. When we were dating he quit drinking and stayed sober almost a yr into our marriage, and I made it clear when we were dating that I will not tolerate drinking or porn, I was also a virgin when we got married, no form.of sex whatsoever, this was his 2nd marriage. Since he started drinking again, I have felt frusterated, hes functoinal but distant and can be lazy and undependable when he drinks. Im contemplating taking a break from our marriage until he seeks help and stays solid for significant amount of time. I also startes cancer treatment when we got married and he has only been able to be there for me thrice. Its the household things I need help with and him to stay off his phone all the time and be present, he works 13 hrs a day shift work, but I too work full time and manage the house and the step children when they are with us. My husband wont pray because he feels like a hypocrite when he prays but still continues to drink, and I told him I wanted to be with a man who prayed. Im feeling petty over my needs and desires not being met. Pleasw any advixe for womem dealing with addiction. Thank you greatly for all your work, time and effort

We were having this conversation with a colleague this morning .
I believe as Christians we forget that we are Christ's Ambassadors we have to be Christ like .We find every excuse to justify and fit in our desires because we say times are changing.
We then justify a lot of things Alcohol, sex before marriage, dressing ,etc.I always remind my self that he is the same yesterday, today and forever .His standards will not change because the world is changing .

      @TheMakhs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Totally Agree. God doesn’t change. He remains the same. We were not in any way saying that we should compromise who we are in Christ due to a shift in culture . Hence we feel so strongly about cultivating a strong relationship with God, as The Holy Spirit is the only One who can convict a person , especially in cases where the Bible doesn’t explicitly condemn something. In the case of alcohol, in some “Christian cultures/communities” we have witnessed that it is acceptable to drink alcohol as long as it doesn’t lead to drunkenness(which is what the Bible warns against) and for some it is a complete no go area.
We do also speak about making sure that your conduct doesn’t make the next person fall . Romans 14:13-23 sums it up so well.

Amazing topic, as a Christian I had a stop and go with alchohol and my mentor told me I need to find out why I choose to drink? And when I quit what are the reasons.
Most of the time I would quit because I wanted to “get right” with God, but the bible says we already made righteous through Jesus Christ, there is nothing I can do/ not do to change his love for me.
So I have quit again for good, not because alcohol is bad but it takes away time with God just like a series on Netflix would do.
I choose to honor God by not drinking not because it’s wrong but because just like I will not eat a full cake as its not good for my health so is alcohol, therefore im not presenting my body as his temple and acceptable sacrifice.
The Holy Spirit is our helper so Ive asked him to kill the desire for alchohol.

"Sometimes people are looking for permission"...that part if y'alls conversation is so true because...Paul even states that even though drinking is not a sin, he doesn't encourage drinking at all because if another brother(or sister) sees and they are weak in spirit they'll just do that because they see someone who isnt weak doing it and then they get drunk or end up abusing it. And it's important to understand that once we are Christian...it's no more just about us but we represent Christ...Paul also talks about if anything stains the image of Christ we shouldn't do it.

I love this conversation. Beginning of this year I prayed for God to remove distractions and anything that doesn’t align me with his purpose for my life and slowly I found myself not wanting to get drunk, go to clubs and stuff and my friends still get shocked when they invite me somewhere and I say no, they feel like the pastor condemned us but honestly God really removed those desires from my heart.

      1 Peter 4:1-6
[1]So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin.
[2]You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God.
[3]You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy-their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.
[4]Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you.
[5]But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead.
[6]That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead-so although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit.

I went through varsity with having at most 5 alcohol experiences. I was so lucky enough to have my roommate and closest friend have a similar relationship with alcohol. We had fun the "childlike" way - Bounce, Gold Reef City, Bowling, etc. and I enjoyed that so much. I do have some MCC here and there but I don't like being drunk. I grew up with a lot of people around me being heavy drinkers and I really never saw anything fruitful from it. The most annoying thing is getting people who want to convince you to "stop being uptight" and drink/drink more.

I love the part where you both separately speak about personal convictions by the Lord because it reiterates the idea of "relationship" with Christ. Our walks are journeys, when you start your walk, God may start with fruit of the spirit with you, then later address alcohol. Personal convictions are the best because when the devil tests you, you'll know *why* you stopped or started something personally at the right time.

Really loving the notion of not glamourising alcohol. The truth is alcohol is a drug; and can potentially become destructive.
Personally i enjoy a glass of alcohol here and there. As a married woman, i can relate with Phetola's mom's hate for alcohol. I sometimes question how my husband can spend over R1000 at PicknPay liquor, but didn't pick up any fruit/veg for the week 🤣Sir??

I appreciate your courage to take on this topic , True alcohol seems to have become a thing in Christian community ...Do we drink , do we not ? Was it even wrong from the beginning or we were just deprived of enjoyment and ect !
I have observed that once a generation get to where they question ...."did God/Bible really say this and that" it's usually because the enemy has a bigger agenda of destruction behind ,like it was during the time of Eve.
May grace increase for us and this generations .

The Bible advices us to be sober and vigilent, according to me once you have a glass you are no longer sober and your decision making might be compromised, says in 1 Conrithians 10:31 "Whatever we eat, drink or do must be in the glorification of God". I do not see how drinking alcohol will Glorify God, hope I dont come across as judgemental...Im like Aus Pheto's mom, I detest alcohol and drunk people bore me🤣🤣🤣

Definitely not coming from a place of judgment of those who drink, that's just my thoughts on the matter

I see myself a lot in pheto, I used to love and hype alcohol, mom hates it and dad drinks but my relationship with God wasn't intact then. I was convicted by the holy spirit to quit. He literally said, it's time to quit because I want all of you and not bits and pieces. I agree with lerato on the relationship you have with God, I don't even want to taste alcohol anymore that's how I've been convicted. For me the reason behind drinking alcohol is to get intoxicated so I don't trust myself to drink just one glass.

funny story ............... i truly believe God always spoke to me through having painful teeth after drinking. years and years back i then took a decision to completely stop drinking, have not had painful teeth ever since. Same applies clubbn , i would feel soooooooo soooooo guilty the following morning after going clubbing, during a church service knowing that i was at a club dancing and raising my hands to certain songs that are just not right then raising my hands to songs that were sang in Church the day after and all that just felt sooo wrong for me.

I enjoyed this video so much! This is literally a conversation I had with my friend a day ago and she was asking how I just stopped , and interrogating why I even started was because of varsity culture and trying to fit in. Through Christ I learnt that I do not have to fit in because I was born to stand out!
And I just love how Mrs Makhs just explained it. That she saw a reflection of herself she did not like. That 100% resonates with me! The holy spirit convicted me the same way. It just does not align with the person God is grooming me to become.
Thank you for handling this topic with so much honesty and care♥

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I had my own conviction from the Holy Spirit last year, and boy did I resist it. But like Phetola, God handed me a mirror, I despised the person I was when I was intoxicated. Took me a year to finally have a healthy relationship with alcohol. Do I still drink yes, but I don't get drunk. I have my limits. I stopped posting on social media majwala because I feel like whoever sees my posts could stumble(fallshort), considering the fact that pictures/videos hardly ever have any context. So yah God's grace has had a chokehold on me. Hakesa bo phaphela bojwala! My desire for God is waaaaay much more than the desire I have for alcohol. Time spent with God and mirroring his Holyness is far more important to me than a good glass of wine

The bible also does speak of giving alcohol to those who want to perish. I pray that pastors never normalize the drinking of alcohol, that would be wrong of them. Let it be something that people do out of their own will and not something that is "okay" just like tattoos nowadays (this is with regards to the tattoo example Mr Makhs made).
I do however agree with what Mr Makhs said when he spoke of considering where you are going interms of God! I do not see myself as a mamfundisi who consumes alcohol. I just dont see how my congregation would value me as a women of God (maybe i am being old school about it- im not even old, i am only 21 lol)

Wow, I love how Mr Makh opened up this conversation, sooooo eye opening. This alcohol issue and how it was used to weaponize black people has shaped our parents thinking and I have never thought about it that way. I think this conversation is so relevant for the transitioning times that we are in where we were raised by parents who saw the topic as taboo but never really explained why and we are now raising kids in a world where certain things are abit more acceptable. Yho.... this is scary!!
This is not just on the current topic of alcohol... there is so much that were are making normal in the church! The more we recalibrate the sense of what God said is acceptable or not... I cringe when I think of the generation of Christian's that will be born in 4generations from now!!
Lord have mercy on the church!🙆🏽‍♀️😳
Look,I won't pretend to be perfect... I've had my growth experiments and mistakes... and no sin is greater... but I'm slowly coming to learn... what God said doesn't change with the times!
But I do love this... the conviction is personal as is the journey of salvation!

In terms of things evolving as generations go...I believe that just because things evolve doesn't make them right especially in the Christian community...it's like, just cause something is not a sin doesn't mean it's right for a person to do. But in the end...we should always deal with such social issues using godly wisdom.

Argh man, I love you guys this was such an important conversation to have. I agree with Abuti Lerato about what he said, that alcohol was used as a weapon especially among the black community. I had to go to school early Saturday morning for extra classes and at the taxi rank there's this popular Shebeen. My heart broke when I saw black dad's and mom's standing in this long queue waiting for the Shebeen to open at 9h00. These are parents who decided to spend their Saturday in a Shebeen and not with their kids and family. Too many children have been robbed of their parents because of alcohol. I'm not even going to talk about my fellow young people who think drinking and getting drunk is cool. It's sad honestly. May God have mercy.

Just got around to this video, thank you for having this conversation. To give you context, I'm a Christian Kenyan and hopeful that my wedding is coming around soon, wanted to ask you how you handled that aspect of the request from the parents to not have alcohol at your wedding. You see, before this video I was sure I would not have any alcohol at mine but my extended family members and future in-laws totally partake. How do I achieve a balance on this very important day for me??

    • @alricamoatshe4638
      @alricamoatshe4638 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Angela. I also didn't have alcohol at my wedding. It's easier to implement this if you and your partner are in agreement, and if you are the ones paying for your wedding. If your families are paying for it, then it's a bit difficult. If you can't control this, then just pray and trust God that everything will still go well, and that nobody will be over intoxicated. All the best with your wedding. And may the Lord bless your marriage ❤️

Fully agree with, "if it's gonna compromise your testimony" which applies to everything we do. As for as a leader I don't agree because Jesus was a leader yet sat and had wine not just with his disciples but with other people as well. Paul was a leader yet still told Timothy his intern to have some wine. That's all because in that culture it wasn't an issue. Personal conviction and being genuine about it is where it's at for me. If God convicts me again to stop I'll do it without flinching.

When I struggled with drunkenness maybe even alcoholism because I used it as an escape, I stopped it altogether for three years. Now I enjoy my drink, always have wine in the house but can go for weeks without drinking. I have had the conversation with my kids because I don't want them to have a weird relationship with alcohol. They know that when they are of age they can have it if they choose to. As for posing with it I have no issue with that either because to me it's just another drink and I don't feel it's my responsibility to teach adult how they should relate with alcohol. When it comes to younger ones I openly talk to them about how they should relate with it.

Before you finish drinking alcohol if you're able for it over it's pain relief and cause of pain exactly in same time I was thinking very often about suicide but I managed to get sober but I was suffering pains for years without any medication and all that pain was caused by alcohol beer mainly.

Eye opener with alcohol being used as a weapon in our race 😩. I feel it’s true coz the countries I’ve travelled in Southern Africa at least, I got surprised at how much they drank and loved alcohol. And I don’t think it’s global because outside Africa I’ve seen how controlled it is. People don’t get crazy drunk in those countries, that’s actually a risk of being arrested.

I believe that it's not all about pastors. It's about what you believe in. What does your christianity say or your book of life? We should not justify our behaviours based on pastors' behaviours or lifestyle.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine. Rulers should not crave alcohol. For if they drink, they may forget the law and not give justice to the oppressed.
Proverbs 31:4‭-‬5 NLT. Also verses 6&7
So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall. I know and am convinced on the authority of the Lord Jesus that no food, in and of itself, is wrong to eat. But if someone believes it is wrong, then for that person it is wrong. And if another believer is distressed by what you eat, you are not acting in love if you eat it. Don’t let your eating ruin someone for whom Christ died.
    Romans 14:13‭-‬15 NLT

I am a Christian and I enjoy some good wine or cocktail. I think the most important principle I go by is Romans 14.
"13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that NOTHING is unclean in ITSELF. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink WINE or to do ANYTHING ELSE that will cause your brother or sister to fall. 22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin."
This explanation is why I am very mindful of WHERE I am drinking from, WHO I am drinking with and WHAT my limits are. I no longer post my drinks on Whatsapp because I don't know who is watching
