- It's time to head underneath.
In this episode, we start from the ground up with wheels, tyres and suspension. We'll take a closer look at some of the mods the R&D Prado already had installed, upgrade a couple that was looking a bit tired, and then even test-fit another wildcard prototype concept that you've not seen before.

Really enjoying the build, and the behind the scenes. ‘Betty’ is looking good with her new boots on ✊🏽✊🏽
Really glad to hear you're enjoying following along and seeing how we bring things to life here!
Can confirm, my moving blankets from my uvp get a run everytime I need to get under my FJ and always thank Kaon for having these instead of mountains of cardboard, bubble wrap or peanuts...
We love hearing that the packaging gets a second life!
Looking very good! Those Method wheels do look terrific. It's great that you explain the details of the components so well. And great to see you use the best measuring equipment: fingers, thumbs, finger nails, hand spans, and even a high tech tape measure! Seems to work well - KAON products always fit perfectly!
They definitely transformed the look of the Prado!
Don’t let Tin hear that, he already breaks out the “Tin span” whenever he can 😂 but you might be right, maybe he’s onto something 😅
Love the new wheels they’re a fantastic look. The uvp looks great in the dark colours too. If only they were available for my y61!
Can’t wait to see what else is to come
The Method's came up a treat didn't they, really made a tremendous difference to how the Prado looks. And you're right, the UVP matches them perfectly.
Everything is starting to come together now! Fantastic build series so far Tin and Emma, loving the style and editing of each video. Great choice on the MT64 shocks too. I've heard nothing but good feedback about them and can't wait to hear your long term experiences with them.
Thanks Todd! Been really happy with the MT64 so far, fantastic bit of kit.
Looking forward to the next video 😍. They are doing a very good preparation, delighted to see each of their products, they have excellent quality, I already enjoy some of them in my swb meadow. Proposal, specific transfer protection for swb🙏
Thanks for the kind words! Glad to hear you've bee enjoying the content!
Really coming together Tin, looking like the offroad weapon it should be 🤙🏻
Thanks Martin! Getting to the business end now. 😊
Love the wheel and mag combo on the white. Great choice in suspensions too. I’m looking for something like that on my22 stock Prado.
Glad to hear it! It's been a great combination of products, genuinely very happy with how the Prado has turned out.
@@KAONaust you mentioned you experienced the tyre and wheel combo on someone else vehicle just wondering for your vehicle if the noise factor was obviously different to the stock tyres? Also the kaon axel and CV correction to the Prado if that is key feature and a notiable one, I really think Kaon should put all of this in a package for the consumer. I know I would buy that package. 🔥🔥🔥🫡
Definitely noise compared to stock tyres. But not as bad as many Muddies we've driven in the past.
I would be interested in the specifics of what you did trimming the mud guards and/or removing flaps, as I am still having clearance issues with 285/70R17 BFG A/T tyres scrubbing at full lock and in dynamic suspension travel. I have removed the plastic flaps front and rear and cut chunks out of the ARB side steel panels.
Hi Tin, I got your bash plates on my Prado and was talked into a diff-drop kit when I bought my suspension - BIG MISTAKE. Had to space out your bash plates as they would not fit under the lower diff otherwise, now I got a permanent rattle from the bash plates below. You do NOT need to drop the diff if you only lift by 2". This is just an extra sale for the suspension supplier.
Worst part for me, I didn't install the diff drop kit myself, so I wouldn't know what to remove.
@@Frank-bh3cm Hey there Frank, we’re sorry to hear that. In our experience, whether you need a diff drop really depends on the type of driving you do and whether you will be putting suspension like this (long travel) really through its paces.
It sounds like you had our original 4mm guards installed, is that correct? Which diff drop? In the X700 Tin installed in this video we do a specific set of guards to suit our own Diff Drop. The team might be able to suggest some fixes for your configuration and the mod the suspension shop did to refit our non-Diff Drop guards.
Just to clarify for others, I don't have the Kaon diff drop kit - this wasn't even out at the time. I still believe this is principally not necessary for a 2" lift. If you decide you want both, bash plates and diff drop, talk to Kaon. Apparently they now have a solution.
That's fair enough! Sounds like that might be your best course of action if you're not stoked with the Diff Drop Kit you have installed.
Loving the entire series! any plans to make the other under guards (Actuator, Fuel tank and shocks) out of the Strenx 700 steel? Also any plan to make a fire extinguisher bracket that works with the Prado models with electric seats?
Thanks Alex! At the moment, we are considering it. The Shock guards aren't a likely candidate as they are so succeptible to rock pitting, having them uncoated in a stainless will provide a longer-lasting result. But there is talk of transitioning other 150 guards across to X700 material too.
Those rims look really good
Could you post a link or the details to the rims as I am looking for replacements for my Prado 19" rims
They really set the Prado off don’t they. We’ve added a link in the video caption for you 👍
It would be great to have the weight of this build shared when the build concludes so fellow 150 series owners can know what a full Kaon kit would add to their Prados
Definitely! We've already shot the last episode, but we cover GVM in detail. ;)
Lookin' good... 👌 What did u coat the undercarriage with? Looks new again👍
+1 for this question, what/if anything have you done to the underbody/diffs? Looks great.
The short answer is two parts - 1st is that the detailer treated the underside, and whatever they used was fantastic, but they weren't able to share the solution with us. Insane Detailing at Carole Park, if you're local. Tin did go over the underbody with some general chassis cleaner to touch up some sections for camera, but the detailer did all the heavy lifting - fantastic product, whatever it is.
Any mods to the car to take that size tyre Tin? Kendra Muds 33?? Looking great- the rear fuel tank cover looks wicked! So many awesome new product on the horizon!Thx J
Thanks Jeremy! Heaps going on. :) At the moment, the only mods to take the tyre have been some slight trimming of the mud guards. They're the Klever M/T2 KS629, we've gone the 285/70R17.
@@KAONaustwicked thanks Guys. Just getting set for 6months OTR! 🤜
@@xploraus no worries! Should add there’s very slight scrub at full lock with our setup - but not bad!
Rims look great, what’s the width and offset ?
I think most people would consider Kenda to be a budget friendly brand of tyre, so will be interested in seeing how they do over time.
I have a 2” lift (OME) in my 2019 Prado. Even after 2 alignments can’t get the steering wheel to dead centre. I am now wondering if it is what you explained with the panhard pulling the rear axle off-centre.
As I also own a Prado, so enjoying this series
Cheers
They look great don't they! They're 17x8.5, zero offset.
For sure! Tin has run rough-terrain Kenda's for quite a few years on the FJ and has never had an issue with them, so there was no hesitation in testing out the MTs for the build.
As for the alignment issue you're experiencing, that's not great. We don't think it would be the Panhard; it's unlikely it would affect the centring of your steering wheel. It's more likely that when doing the alignment, they haven't quite adjusted the ball joints for your steering correctly, or something in that vein.
👍
Hi Tim and Kaon family.
Are you able to do a weight of the vehicle once it has all the additions to it by chance?
Keen to get some extras on my vehicle but worry about going over the GVM
Also, what is the tyre size and do they scrub at full lock?
Hey there, for sure! We do a dive into GVM in the final episode, so you'll have to stay tuned. GVM is definitely something to keep front of mind during the build process.
Tyres are Klever M/T2 KS629, we've gone the 285/70R17, they do scrub slightly at full lock, we have trimmed mud guards on this and that helps.
@@KAONaust legends! Thanks for the content and products. I love those tyres and might have to add them to my father's day list. Hahaha
The project looks awesome mate, what kenda tyres are they?
They're the Klever M/T2 KS629, we've gone the 285/70R17.
Please a pamhard correction for 200 series. Ive asked around and none of the local fans in Perth are interested
We've got good news for you... but you might be waiting a few more months.
@@KAONaust check out DrKDSS.
What size tires are them
Klever M/T2 KS629, we've gone the 285/70R17.
Are you interested in selling the fj rims by any chance?
I think there might be someone keen already - but if they haven't taken them up, feel free to contact our sales team at info@kaon.com.au.
Moist 😂
Love the build
@@DerekNeuschulz was wondering if Tin had even noticed at first 😂
