Look into making (or buying) some texture stamps. I made some once by drying out an orange peel then putting some liquid latex on it. Once dry you have a piece of rubber that you can press onto a sculpt that gives the appearance of skin pores. The dimples on the orange peel shrink why dried. Or put some latex on some rocks or concrete. Instant rock or sand texture. It's like cut and paste.

What material did you make it from?
I use a clay called Super Sculpey, wire and acrylic paint to make the whole thing!
