The reason the little boy's jumper overalls are called 'John-John' is because when JFK & Jackie were in the White House little John, Jr was always dressed in them (you may have noticed that the young British princes wore them also) and because in 1960 everything Kennedy was 'in' many things are still so identified. 😃 The understated little A-line dress she made popular will forever be a 'Jackie dress' for we ladies of a certain a certain age!😂

I was thinking that might be the reason for the garments’ name. Thanks for confirming it!

My dream is to make a Jackie dress. I saw videos of her wearing them but it was when I saw The Nanny, Fran Drescher, wearing one. It looked so beautiful!

My grandmother's friend Miss Laura taught me to sew "vintage" clothing, since my grandmother was more of a gardener than a sewer. My daughter is into swing dancing and we use some of the old pattern designs Miss Laura gave me tot make my daughter's vintage style swing dance costumes.

I loved the story about your wedding dress 🥰 For what it's worth, I think you made the right decision not going into debt for the sake of that "perfect" dress. I am sure you looked adorable in the dress you did wear for your wedding! And the best thing is, now you can sew, you can make yourself your dream dress, exactly as you wish, and more than once if you so choose! 😊

Thank you so much! I’m so happy with my decision to not buy the dress I don’t regret it one bit. Especially now that I know how to sew because if I had the skill Back then. That dress would not have been the one either.

Ha-ha, @Stephanie Canada, I am trying to picture my 5’1” self in that giant opera coat when NOT going to an opera. I used to go to the Sunday matinees of Opera Pacific with my mom and sis, and we wore business casual clothes. We were carrying on a tradition started by my great-grandma and grandma, who lived in NY and CT respectively. They went to the Met for opera matinees.
Sadly, the 2008 recession killed Opera Pacific. We found out about the Saturday matinee simulcasts from the Met (at movie theaters) & went to those for several years. Sadly, somehow that fizzled out, since Mom is now in a nursing home. I may start up again next season, inviting Sis whenever she has time!

The "Jon-Jon" style of jumper became famous and widely copied because it was named for John F. Kennedy Jr. son's nickname when he was a little guy (he and his wife later died in a plane crash). If I'm remembering correctly there are several famous B&W photos of Jon-Jon as a little toddler playing in his dad's office in that style of outfit.
The patterns you found are lovely. And, I as well, get a case of the nerves when handling just about every vintage pattern that I've made so far. I copy them to pattern paper just so I don't destroy anything that's survived so many years.
Love the way you all boost each other. Well done.

I was married in 1982 and had just started my sewing journey but I wanted a princess Di type dress so I found a similar pattern and made my dress, five bridesmaids dresses and my mother’s dress for our wedding! Glad I did it because I couldn’t afford a store bought dress and they turned out beautiful! 😄

Hi, SewRena. I am only a quarter of the way through your video-and there’s a muu-muu pattern-that brought back some great memories!
I lived in a suburb of Los Angeles as a little girl (born in 1958). It was a different and maybe more peaceful life. Many of the moms, including mine, wore muu-muus at home. My mom is 5’1” like me. Her muu-muus were much less voluminous than the one on that pattern! Otherwise, Mom would’ve looked like she was wearing a circus tent!
Side note, 33 years ago, I sewed my own maternity dresses, because commercially available maternity dresses were also like circus tents! My mom, who only sewed when she was inspired, sewed lots of maternity tops and skirts, too, due to those circus tents. “Short girl problems!”

Your pieces are soooo cute. Since you are a tiny size, your creations looks just perfect on you, but I'd like to see you create one for a friend who is larger--say a 16 or higher. The 50's styles can be tricky (IMHO) on us who are apple-shaped, and I'd love to see your styling on us. Love your work!

  • @Sjp374
    @Sjp374 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

You are so right not to go into debt, but I’m so glad you got to do that Oleg Cassini later. I’m the commenter whose mom gifted her an OC wedding gown (probably same big box store, but different dress. It was a drop waist with a big organza princess skirt). I wore my hair in a 40’s style and did opera gloves. I relate to being that young bride who is attracted to vintage but just lacking experience and stumbling on the OC line. But we also mostly paid for our wedding ourselves and no dress is worth big debt!

It was a discontinued style and had a Queen Victoria feel.I purchased it off the rack of a Bridal store.I paid $50.00 cash.I also did not want to be in dept after the wedding.❤

It was made for me but I don’t have the talent you have at reacting vintage looks. I really love the shorts suit and I would love to make it to fit me as an adult. It was my favorite shorts set because my dad decided to become a hair stylist and cut my hair. If you look closely you can see a tear in my eye. I was crying because it was picture day at school that day and my dad cut my hair. Both of my parents are longer with me now 😪😪😪 I would really love a this suit from my childhood… I would really like any help that you could offer.

You look great in your 1960s clothes. I would wear the 1940s dresses. Does the name John-John refer to JFK Jr? When my son was little, I went window shopping in a very expensive children's shop. I went home and copied the little boy's play clothes. I was able to buy almost the same fabric.

more than likely, the little boy's jumper being called a "john john" is probably because of President Kennedy's son's press nick-name was "John John".
