@@Dangic23 Baggage fees did start as a way to recoup financial loss after 9/11, but then with soaring fuel prices is what kept bag fees to stay. It's really not absurd. The more a plane weight, the more fuel it burns. If you travel light, you don't have to pay for that extra fuel burn. If you chose to travel with more, you pay for it. Very sinple. and not greedy at all.
I've wondered why airlines haven't learned from the maritime cargo industry? When cargo ships started using standard containers, the entire industry became so mush more effective and efficient. The airlines should standardize suitcases and carry-ons. One small and one big, and all the same. No extra pockets, expanders, or things dangling off the sides. Now of course people are still going to travel with golf clubs, surf boards, bicyles, etc. but those will be handled as oversized and charged accordingly. At least this way we know that all carry-ons will fit rather than watch some try to cram what should have been a checked bag into an overhead compartment.
As someone who worked at Heathrow for 10.5 years, I know what is talked about the ant hill. Passengers don't really appreciate what is involved in getting them and their luggage to there destination. Christmas pressure one year, I personally loaded a Uld unit (aircraft bin), with 4 tons of post. It was going on a jumbo flight to New York. The driver of the truck couldn't believe how much the suspension dropped when the Uld left the high lift.
It’s not cost saving. They are making you uncomfortable by charging for something that was already included before. Is like saying that you are ok with the airline charging for the seatbelt, because you are bringing your own seatbelt and “outsmarted “ them. 😂😂😂😂😂
@@Dangic23 it is definitely cost saving and its not uncomfortable, way more uncomfortable to be carrying a check bag around... I only pay for what I need. I can fit everything in a personal item & carry on so I dont need to check a luggage.
You'd be amazed how many people overpack for short trips. Just properly packing a bag could change your checked bag to a carry on (obviously without the full sized liquids). I think a better way to do it would be to weigh checked bags and charged you based on weight (capped out at $25) so you might only have to pay $15 dollars for example for the weight. If you can afford to pay for the plane ticket and often transportation to the airport usually a checked bag fee is pretty minimal.
I travel light. Hand bag and carry on. If it dont fit then it doesn't come. Simple. Saves time ⏲️ and any possibility of misplaced luggage in the event of connecting flights
The solution is simple. Airlines should allow passengers to check at least one bag for free, but charge them for carry-on luggage (except for a purse or small backpack, etc). That would improve efficiency, speed, and the overall experience.

We pay this much for checked bags but as soon as we receive our bags in the carousel baggage claims. Our bags are either have zipper broken, the wheels came off, cracked hard case luggage, etc. Airports should train their staff NOT to throw bags around.
This video changed my mind about bag fees. I used to think the airlines are greedy but they showcased Delta's baggage operations and what the baggage operations team was doing. They are leveraging some efficient technology. Im all for the bag fees. PAY THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THEMSELVES IN DANGER TO TRANSFER OUR BAGS! Iwill be more patient when waiting for my checked bags because they are doing the lords work.
It's Free on Asian airlines, with top-notch services & quality control. Staff handle the baggage with care mostly, no theft, less lost bags than US. Its so much better than US baggage operations yet is FREE!
They are being greedy. All that PROFIT does not go into paying employees better. Thats why Delta strikes more frequently and longer than any other airline. Airlines are constantly looking for another way to squeeze more money out of us. Prime example is their new class for tickets. This is what Late Stage Capaitalism looks like.
In the 80s it was long lines at the check in counter with no bag fee's and you had your free seat assignment. Now in the 2020s its no check in counter all computer check in and a fee for everything.
Bag fee isn’t junk fee is called people are so cheap forcing airlines to separate ticket prices into different chunks. If you add everything together its the whole ticket price, in the past they don’t charge baggage fees is because those fees were all included in the ticket price you paid thats why flight in the past actually cost a lot more than now (inflation adjusted price), now the price is just all unbundled.
Yeah I don’t think so. The price of a flight between NYC and ATL is almost the same on Delta and Southwest. However, when you add baggage and select the option that allows a carry-on, the ticket price increases by almost $100 on Delta. Prices are not cheaper today, baggage fees were a “temporary” fee put in place after 9/11 due to the downturn, and pure greed is what has kept them around 2 decades later.
Kind of like the streaming services. We used to pay one cable bill for hundreds of channels, not people like to pay for separate services. It was probably cheaper the old way.

It wasn't that long ago that a worker checked your ticket vs. your luggage when you left the baggage claim area. Nowadays, just anyone off the street can grab a bag and walk away. What happened?
I’m very happy that by not giving airlines $30 for something that once was free and now decided to charge for, potentially is costing them three or four times more in lost revenue and delay compensation. I’d keep bringing carry on baggage filled to the brim and putting it on the compartment as slow as possible.

I wish they start charging the bathroom also, or maybe include in a package like Wifi + bathroom + luggage = $200. I think it’s doable and customers will appreciate in the long run (because they choose to run instead of flying).
Airlines make the least money from selling seats compared to bag fees and the very very profitable frequent flyer plans. Freq fler plans can be worth more than the airline division.
Those bag fees are why I always carry on all day and if I need to check my bag at the gate, then I make sure I can check it for free. I pay nothing extra if I want to carry my bag. Also, as a previous Ramp agent, one thing that the airlines don’t do is have a commission for every bag that is checked for both their ticketing agents checking peoples bags and for the ramp agents handling their bags.
Many airlines are getting rid of carry on too on their cheapest fares. So when you “upgrade” to the regular fare, you are paying more than $50 to get the privilege of bringing a carry on and choosing your middle seats in the back row that are left to be picked.
I flew Delta to Australia, and they wanted $100 for my second bag. When I found I could carry on the bag, they kept the $100 even though I didn't check it in. At least I now have more understanding and sympathy for all the workers behind the scene that handle the bags.
Amazes me how baggage theft isn’t more popular. All you need to do it walk into any airport and the baggage claims are after security so you can just walk in and out with them
I mean, as somebody who does the excat job they are talko g about, in some respects the fees are a good thing from my view. It is a incentive to properly planning your packing. Central and South american, as well as African flight are notorious for having huge bag loads on the narrowbodies and heavy bag loads on the widebodies. And these bags are not properly packed, falling apart, round little balls.... everything but a rectangular bag that has a even weight distribution. I have had 1 bag rip as i picked it up, and it was full of oatmeal. Like 15 gallon bags filled with steel cut oats. Its frankly silly what people put in these bags. And sure we constantly try not to lose track of or misload anything. And while the raw number of missed bags may be really high, if I am getting 99% of the bags on board thats really good. If your car is 99% full of gas, of your phone is 99% charged that pretty good right?
There’s plenty of ticket options that still include a checked bag. If y’all keep booking the cheapest ticket, don’t expect much. If you pay for a first class, you get 2 free (included) bags.
Here's something you can do: pay the baggage fee on the outbound flight, then send your bags home by UPS ground service - after all, you have the rest of your wardrobe waiting at home. A buddy saved about 50 bucks doing this.
While it isn't a new thing to charge for checked baggage, US airline companies are the ones to take the practice to the extreme. Take for instance a flight from JFK to LAX is around about 600+ on average one way and takes about 5.5 hours to fly there, depending on traffic. Take the same distance trip in Australia, Brisbane to Perth, which is almost the same distance, cost almost 150US less and doesn't charge for checked baggage. Now I can add the fact that flying isn't exactly fun in the US and the way people are treated in US airports is a travesty but that is going outside the focus of this subject. Consider the fact that checked baggage comes just under revenue, in the profit and loss statement that is, no one can tell how much they actually make but as the numbers show, it will keep going up as these corporations want. To put it into perspective, US airlines are consistently rated lower in almost every aspect of their service with respect to their pricing. Also, US airlines are not known for treating your luggage very well, and AA is one of the worst while earning 1.2US billion in revenue just for baggage handling. That is all I wanted to say.

why are US based airlines making you pay for carry ons???? I flew frontier from NYC to Orlando i was only allowed a personal item and my friend is flying united from NYC to LAX and she's not able to bring a bag larger than a piece of paper on board that's disgusting imo
My view is the airlines should charge a standard price for a ticket as it once was. If that means raising fares then so be it. There is no excuse for this buy a ticket, then pay added charges for the one bag you check in, then you pay added charges for the seat you select. It's gotten to the point if you find a round trip fare for $350, then add in seats and your luggage. That damn ticket is approaching or has hit $500. Otherwise you have to fly Southwest whenever you fly. You pay the roundtrip fare and your done with it unless you have more than 2 bags. Truthfully it wouldn't bother me anymore if the airlines all started going out of business, since its become a total misery to fly anymore at least within the USA.
These costs and the sheer annoyance of getting to a flight is the reason I haven't flown since 2005. If I can't get there on the ground I simply don't go, with apologies to those I have been unable to attend... because flying has become more of a nightmare than convenience. Case in point: I was just coming into Atlanta when that idiot ran down the up escalator when the airport was under extreme security (2002). Ended up shutting down the airport for like... 4+ hours> Another incident was when I got my bag I found it was no longer neatly packed but crammed and poorly secured. When I got home I noticed that a few of the clothing items were not mine. One of them had a small wallet, the kind a tourist might carry with as little as possible but it did have someone's driver license in it. Took me couple weeks, back then, to track them down and make direct contact rather than going through the airline. They were delighted to get their license back after almost a month.
Nationalized highspeed rail. No need to worry about bag fees or getting separated from your bags while getting to where you need to get fast. Bonus, no TSA.
With America being such a large country I'm not sure I'd want to sit on a train for a day or two crossing the country. I believe in regional high speed rail to connect larger cities but cross country would not be an ideal way to travel.
@@Truth-of-the-matter Rail can't replace all air travel and not all luggage is from cross country flights. The average flight distance is ~500mi which is perfect for HSR.
It is unfair, that a fat person, who weighs 30 kilos more than me, does not have have to pay any additional fees, but if my luggage weighs 5 kilos more than allowed, I have t pay something like $150. The German airline "Condor" even charges passengers for a reservation of an overhead bin. The overhead bin above your seat may be empty, but you can't use it, if another passenger has reserved it.
I thought about it, and letting everyone pay its weight would unfortunately lead to a whole other level of discrimination (whites vs blacks; women vs men; tall vs short). Would people be weighted right before they board the plane? Or when they buy their ticket? It's completely unfeasible.
@@TitusAzzurro There could be a normal 23 kilo bag free for everyone and lightweight people could get a 500 grams more luggage allowance for every kilo they weigh below 95 kilos or so (with clothes). That would not punish fat people, but benefit the slim. In the air every kilo counts. It is more expensive to lift a fat person to 37,000 feet than a slim one.
All that extra money goes to stockholders go back to free meals with silverware and free checked bags you made money before doing it why can't you do now
Here's some thought...if US had more trains connecting cities..we wouldn't have to take airplanes to get to different parts of the country. Infact we can lift your own bags onto the train. When we go to a destination I don't understand how you will not have checked bags..which is almost a must...so airlines are charging for a necessity for travel. If US invested more in railways than the Airline Cartel...we wouldn't have to pay for a travel necessity. I'm sure policy makers and lobbyists get a share of profits to keep exploiting this need. Moreover the only developed country with the worst airline customer service is the US...travel within Asia and you'll know how bad US airlines treat their customers and also exploit them.
Forced to press the button? If it wasn't profitable, they wouldn't charge? What a load of hogwash. They'd still charge to offset the cost!! The bag fees DOUBLE the flight cost.
They shouldn’t charge. Never get charged in Europe, Asia or Australia. In Australia not only do they not charge but they still provide full food service with alcohol on afternoons. That’s full service.
One checked bag should be part of the lowest fare ticket on the plane for international flight. They are going to nickle and dime everything to keep YoY profit increase.
Since airlines only make money when they are flying and being in the ground is an inconvenience for them, tell them to start loading planes in the sky then

We are seeing the same now, with business charging for things that were included before the pandemic.
To ”recover”, but all these new charges will become permanent.
Baggage fee is a scam, not a 'business'..
That's silly. No one is lying about the charges and the service is real.
Another reason why I'm a carry-on only guy. So much more convenient and cost saving
Except some of us have knives and electronics
It’s not cost saving.
They are making you uncomfortable by charging for something that was already included before.
Is like saying that you are ok with the airline charging for the seatbelt, because you are bringing your own seatbelt and “outsmarted “ them.

We need regulation for the airline industry. Baggage fees are way to expensive. Baggage used to be free with every flight.
The funny thing is them making it seem easy when cameras around😂🤣😂🤣 IYKYK
I travel light. Hand bag and carry on. If it dont fit then it doesn't come. Simple. Saves time ⏲️ and any possibility of misplaced luggage in the event of connecting flights
that is not a good excuse to charge money on check bag
The solution is simple. Airlines should allow passengers to check at least one bag for free, but charge them for carry-on luggage (except for a purse or small backpack, etc). That would improve efficiency, speed, and the overall experience.
Hope this bad habit of charging for bags doesn't catch on with other airlines outside US😢.
the real story should be why people carry their kitchen sinks on the plane for a 2-4 day domestic trip in America! 😂
for me it's cuz my family is usually a doing a 2 week road trip somewhere.
Consumerism and social media
Exactly. I can fly internationally for a month with a carryon and a small backpack (not one of those huge ones).

Airports should train their staff NOT to throw bags around.
To be fair, have you seen how TSA handles luggage?
This video changed my mind about bag fees. I used to think the airlines are greedy but they showcased Delta's baggage operations and what the baggage operations team was doing. They are leveraging some efficient technology. Im all for the bag fees. PAY THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THEMSELVES IN DANGER TO TRANSFER OUR BAGS! Iwill be more patient when waiting for my checked bags because they are doing the lords work.

They get paid because it's their job. They're free to quit.
Airline should pay them, not you.
A checked bag was never free, it was included with the price of the ticket.
Well now is still included and they also charge for it.. the government (DEM or REP) allows them to steal from us
And now that you have to pay extra (since 9/11), the ticket didn’t go down.
So you are still paying even if you don’t have luggage.
Now you pay twice.
@@gaoxiaen1 Exactly, it's called double dipping.

When did that happen? I've been flying for 20+ years and I have never seen anyone check the bag to match your ticket.
I’m very happy that by not giving airlines $30 for something that once was free and now decided to charge for, potentially is costing them three or four times more in lost revenue and delay compensation. I’d keep bringing carry on baggage filled to the brim and putting it on the compartment as slow as possible.

US service in hospitality has become one of the worst in the world. Extra charges everywhere when flying, idiotic "resort" and other fees for hotels, endless tipping.
I wish they start charging the bathroom also, or maybe include in a package like Wifi + bathroom + luggage = $200. I think it’s doable and customers will appreciate in the long run (because they choose to run instead of flying).

In India we can check in a Luggage bad and a carry on bag together weighing less then 23kgs. air india allows even more
Theres a funny side to this. Ever seen passengers wearing every item of clothing they posess?
Those bag fees are why I always carry on all day and if I need to check my bag at the gate, then I make sure I can check it for free. I pay nothing extra if I want to carry my bag. Also, as a previous Ramp agent, one thing that the airlines don’t do is have a commission for every bag that is checked for both their ticketing agents checking peoples bags and for the ramp agents handling their bags.
Seeing how people is abusing it, the end of free carry on is near.
Many airlines are getting rid of carry on too on their cheapest fares. So when you “upgrade” to the regular fare, you are paying more than $50 to get the privilege of bringing a carry on and choosing your middle seats in the back row that are left to be picked.
@@jorgebolivar I’m going to be honest, they already were on the legacy carriers anyway since the bag fees were first introduced

I flew Delta to Australia, and they wanted $100 for my second bag. When I found I could carry on the bag, they kept the $100 even though I didn't check it in. At least I now have more understanding and sympathy for all the workers behind the scene that handle the bags.
I figured out how to beat the airlines and never pay for bags...
I just wear everything when I fly.
Amazes me how baggage theft isn’t more popular. All you need to do it walk into any airport and the baggage claims are after security so you can just walk in and out with them
The complexity of these operations is one reason a flight will rarely leave on time. Like taxes, delays are here to stay.
The real answer is even shorter. Customers let them. If customers refused to fly right when bag fees were introduced there would be no bag fees today.
Thats why I fly foreign airlines, no added fees

My sister was planning on coming but when she how expensive the plane tickets and the Bag limit fees were she had to dip out.

I didn’t check, but I believe 30lb checked bag shipping to home via UPS will be more expensive than on Delta
That is all I wanted to say.
i understand the fees but damn....

Delta has one of the most beautiful airline transportation systems, no complaints here👌👍🏼🙌💪😀😎🤙🏽
These costs and the sheer annoyance of getting to a flight is the reason I haven't flown since 2005.
4+ hours>
Another incident was when I got my bag I found it was no longer neatly packed but crammed and poorly secured.

Y’all bring up fat people whenever you can even when they’re not even the topic of discussion. The obsession is weird…
@@TitusAzzurro There could be a normal 23 kilo bag free for everyone and lightweight people could get a 500 grams more luggage allowance for every kilo they weigh below 95 kilos or so (with clothes).
