    Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfil her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

    • @caligulalonghbottom2629
      @caligulalonghbottom2629 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tell me how this isn't given 'too much edge'... The costumes are in edgy materials, laser cut leather.... and a toned down and edgy colour palette except for the men. I'm not a costume expert but it even looks like that Ermine gown is based on the 1830s instead of the early 1700s, at least thats what it reminds me of. Baroque England, though, is a little bit 'odd' and I'm no expert like I said but clearly this entire movie is quite edgy, its about a lesbian love affair times two with the queen of england.

    Usually, the movie is never as great as the trailer - there are exceptions, and this is one of them. Fabulous movie. she was very beautiful when she was young. I like her beauty more than Queen Sisi. In my country, she was known for her decision of releasing new currency. But true, she is not very popular in media, perhaps she wanted it, she didn't like other people repeating about her chain of sorrow, centuries after she die, not much information from herself, mostly from other sours. She was a genious.

      Yeah the ending is amazing while tragic. Confusing at first too but when you realize what it means, it's satisfying. The bunnies represent the Queen's loneliness, replacing those she loves with someone that turns out to be less genuine. The rabbits also represent the cage that Abigail is now in, thinking she has won at first but now realizing she is still dependent on the Queen's favor, who now hates her because her true colors is now seen.

By showing you the whole room and also isolating the character in a small space-like, a small character in a big space-you get a feeling of no escape." Fascinating! Olivia Colman is getting more recognition in the last years! She won many accolades recently! With the crown and the favorite, I think she is going to get new awards...maybe an Oscar or at least a nomination for this movie! She is a fantastic actress! Same for Stone with this movie and maniac

    Never thought we would see the reign of Queen Anne made into a movie. The Elizabeths and Victoria so overshadow Anne.

    After watching this brilliant film, I had to look up the historical context behind the story, and damn was I pleased to find how many facts were right on the mark and not exaggerated at all. The affairs, betrayal, power play, and politics of it all.

    Unbelievable this movie only received one Oscar. It deserved Production Design (One of the best works of the decade), Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing (It was not the best of the year, but the better among the nominees) at least.

    Man those fish-eyed wide angle fast paced shots were beautiful to look at and actually added a feeling to the scene - knowing way more than you can handle.

    Of course we all know this will dominate in categories such as Costume Design, Production Design, Cinematography, etc. But I’m betting on this also getting nominations in the major categories as well!

    I didn’t know this movie existed until today, I can’t wait to watch it! I actually watched a Lucy Worsley documentary about Queen Ann last year, it was very interesting, like most of Worsley’s documentaries.

    Lathimos, probably one of the most unique directors of the 21st century with movies like dogtooth, lobster, the killing of a sacred deer,etc

    Best movie in 2019 for me. Also one of the best movies I ever watched! Can’t describe it with just one word. I left the cinema months ago and still thinking about it till today. ❤️ masterpiece by Yorgos Lanthimos again. And three brilliant actresses.
