  • Azul's issues with food are often referenced in both versions in the game, but his confession to Riddle was removed from the English-language adaptation, while his characteristic of applying himself to everything he does was also changed on EN.
0:04 - Montage of clips that reference Azul's issues with food
1:26 - Azul's confession to Riddle in Book 6 changed
    2:12 - Azul's octopus joke removed from Book 6
2:40 - Jamil's line about Azul changed, contrary to the character

I understand weight is big problem in west, but the east also has been having issues with weight gain. A part of Azul relatable sorrow as a character is the point he became over cautious with weight gain due to bullying and how it has psychological effects. In Japanese version, Floyd was very fond of "soft azul" (chubby/squeezable) and though, is very glad that Azul now likes himself more, claims to miss his "softness", which often irritates Azul.

It's very impressive to think of it like this when book 6 takes on that moment. Where he semi-confesses to having an eating problem, mixing of how very "laid back" he was in his younger days, yet holds back from saying anything further than he just put "focus" on other means. If taking into account what happened in Book 3 with the context to Book 6. I believe there is a reason why he talked about his past the way he did with Riddle in that moment. If one were to see it a flow as continuity to his response from a weak point in his life. A moment he's aware of yet won't outright say it, at least in EN instead of JP for this matter.
I think for the flight thing there, that would be just a matter of tone that was use to explain Azul's drive for studying overall compared to flight class. Like the dynamic of what a focus was changed, yet his drive for perfection in what he is good at wasn't lost. Another interesting note to take on seeing is how the future of the story goes from there.
Overall, a very neat dive into Azul's character in regards to his issues thus far. Brava! XD

1:53 I and my sister discussed this scene, and she said it could be because the Western audience could be offended by the phrasing. The fact that he said "storing calories" coupled with Riddle agreeing that he "probably shouldn't have done that" could invite a bunch of 'TWST is fatphobic' accusations.
Of course, both me and my sister think that they should have just translated it accurately, instead of rephrasing it. Imo it conveys Azul's feelings of regret, insecurity and self-deprecation better 🤔
2:12 I knew something was off when I listened to the dialogue and saw that the translations didn't match. 😂 I was like "IS AZUL IMPLYING THAT HE HAS THREE HEARTS???" Thinking about it now, it sounds unlikely. Though at that moment, I was quite taken aback. 😂
Thank you so much for making a video on best boy! I recently got into TWST, and your channel has been very informative 💖

I think the removal of the dialogue involving Azul's issues with food is understandable, as eating disorders and weight issues are something of a hot-button topic here in the west. It's hard to speak about these issues here without someone yelling at you for body shaming, so they may have wanted to avoid that issue all together.

    • @thenagito

They barely removed it though, as said, just the part in Book 6 with Riddle. Everything else is left intact

No, it's a key component of the character and it shouldn't be removed. The implications of an eating disorder really tells just how bad the bullying was, but in twst eng it doesn't seem "as bad"

@@hollowwoods7130 I didn't say it was the *right* decision. Just that it was understandable one based on the cultural climate. Personally, I wish translators would be more faithful to the source material when doing their jobs, regardless of those issues. You miss out on so much context. 😑😑

If that's the case, I think that's absolutely ridiculous. Azul's lines are not the only thing they changed. I don't speak Japanese, but I heard from people who do that Jamil in the JP version is like a whole different person than in the NA version. Extremely important lines like "My family is held hostage by the Asim family" are changed to "I want to uphold tradition". With everything that the translators try to omit, change and improve, I feel like I don't know the characters at all. Stick to the story and screw everyone who can't handle these 'sensitive' topics.
On the bright side, this has significantly increased my motivation to learn Japanese lmao.

On a slightly lighter and more funnier note then Azul's troubles with food the joke about him not having enough hearts actually blew my mind because I didn't understand it until I started googling about octopus anatomy and let me be the first to say that octopi are fucking weird and I am waiting for the day that we get some lore on octomer anatomy works because if it's anything like regular octopus anatomy it's a cluster fuck

Not only octopus anatomy but eel anatomy too!! they are not as weird as octopi but they are still nightmare material. Moray eels (the twins' species) have a second set of jaws hidden at the back of their throats, they had to evolve this way because their prey is too big and strong to be eaten the way other eels eat (we know the twins like to fight very stong ppl just for fun). This second pair of jaws can move forward and back to it's original place and they look a lot like hooks.

I used to think the censorships made in the EN version were due to some sort of Disney policy, but the more I think about it the inconsistency tells me otherwise. Like, if weight is an issue, then why is Vil's Labwear vignette left perfectly intact despite how it should be considered worse than what's done elsewhere? Speaking of which, a video on inconsistencies in the EN version would be really cool!

Everyone likes to say he has an eating disorder but I don't think so. When you're a person who struggles to maintain a thin weight naturally - it takes active and considerate work to keep it off. It sounds like Azul is sensitive about it and limits how much he can have, but It doesn't sound like he's completely depriving himself. He has to work for it - and I understand that to someone who doesn't really need to do that to remain a healthy weight, it sounds concerning but, realistically - that's just how some people manage it. It's not necessarily unhealthy. Food is such a weird thing to get addicted to - you can't completely cut it out of your life. It has to be managed - and that's what I see Azul doing. If he got any more strict or severe, could see it crossing into unhealthy territory though.

I have always said this! I never once believed Azul has an eating disorder, I just think he's one of those people who gains weight very easily and he _has_ to be mindful of what he eats. Not everyone who counts the calories they consume have an eating disorder, some people really don't have a choice but to do that if they don't want to balloon up lmao.

@@HusbandoCollector You can't prove that he has one, just like we can't prove that he doesn't. The severity of his weight loss and diet are never mentioned, so it's all speculation. There's no need to get upset that someone has a different opinion than you.
