    Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

    Last year, we were catching largemouth all day on Red. My grandson looked and looked for hours and finally found some crawfish, they were all green patterns, none were red. So we noted your "match the hatch" hypothesis too.
    Thanks for sharing!

    There is something to be said about "red" in general, it seems like when red hooks are used the fish will bite it more and from what I have seen on some of your lure modifications red does enhance or "trick" out the lure for a different presentation. Thanks for this information Randy! :)

      It could be that RED, hooks or otherwise, loses it color before any other when submerged in water..
      This fact can be gleaned from a study of Hydrologic Optics, which can be a big help to anglers when choosing colors.
      Maybe fish tend to bite better on Red hooks because they're harder for them to see.

    I have not found red to be better at any time. Maybe it’s the muddy Oklahoma water chartreuse or white has always dominated my fishing. I do catch fish on other colors. The red blade on a spinner bait seems to out produce sometimes. That why I just throw everything until the fish tell me what they want.. if I fished different lakes with grass and better visibility I might find reds more productive 🤷‍♀️ love your videos

      Here on the IL River Chartreuse and White dominate in all lure categories; 3/8 Nichols Rado (double Colorado blades) Chartreuse and White with the gold main blade and that red/orangish kicker is a killer.

    What I’ve noticed is that the crawdads burry themselves in clay banks in winter and come out usually when water temperature gets and holds around 50 degrees. I thinks that’s why you catch a lot on like an red body crankbait and green pumpkin back where the clay mud has washed off.

    In very stained water, several feet away fish see other fish as a dark blobs going through the water, the faster the blob moves, the more it looks like blob, they would not see any color until the moment they hit the lure, sound on the other hand travels much farther and faster then they can see color. So sound may be more of a key then color. That’s one of the reasons big bladed spinner baits are so effective, sound before flash!
    With clear water, one could write volumes on Color!

Up here in NH there isn't any winter jerkbait fishing available but this past spring I caught my first open water bass on a jerkbait and it weighed in at 6.40 lbs so I was pretty psyched to start my year off on that note!

      @@randyblaukatintuitive yup. a question came up about the possibility of the Smallmouth record being broken. I posted a chat saying "with FFS, it's going to be more likely". Then the host brought it up and mentioned "the controversy" and your name. Ben Miliken was the guest of honor and he was being a regular blowhard making all kinds of accusations and insults.
      I kept neutral, but I did make corrections to what they were saying. And I did remind Ben, indirectly, that you were famous before him or TH-cam. That we should show more respect for the pioneers of the sport. And I made a side comment saying "TH-cam has been berry berry good to me" mocking his accomplishments in life.
      Then I gave it to him real good with several $5 super chats. You know my angle with the made in china stuff. He got real brash and started insulting the American people for not wanting to work and blah blah blah.
      His brashness created an opening and I stuck it to him good! had everyone laughing with the questions I was asking him. Maybe you can reach out to the host, I forget his name, to see it. The replays are for members only, so most people won't be able to see it.

  • @TwoShoeMcGee

    I think your hitting upon a couple of concepts and theory here in color spectrum and light refraction. Fish see in a infrared to ultraviolet spectrum (ROYGBV), this meaning red disappears first and violet disappears last in the water column. Second is light refraction in that the clearer the water and the more sunlight you have the further red can be seen, in clear ocean water at full sunlight red will start to disappear at about 20' depth and any variation to that makes red less viable.

  • @clay7514

    Red disappears before any other color with water depth. It will look dark grey in just a few feet of water. That doesn't exactly mean it'll "disappear" though, it'll just look more natural.

  • @kadenz10kz
    @kadenz10kz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Randy, I know at certain depths in the ocean certain colors disappear or change to other colors. For example red after a certain depth looks green. Do you think it’s possible that the water clarity and conditions make red or orange baits look more natural to them than the baits look when they’re out of the water and we are looking at them? Just an interesting theory I had.

    • @darrellgrant7615
      @darrellgrant7615 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I saw a chart just the other day on Google image search and it showed that red turns to black the deeper you go.

    • @kadenz10kz
      @kadenz10kz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@darrellgrant7615 depends on how far down you are. Saw a video of a guy free dive bow fishing and when he would shoot fish at certain depths their blood would appear green, but when they would get nearer to the surface it would be red. I would say we normally don’t target fish with these red crankbaits in depths deep enough for it to look black in my opinion.

    Up here in the North it's ice on time. I am the average weekend angler. I have never seen an orange/red colored craw ever up here. They are brownish with a little black and dark green/gray pretty much year round. Post spawn my fishing buddy and I are fishing live craws so I know what they look like up here. The smallmouth really don't care what the color is. They gobble them down.

    The water is purified in the winter. Best time to catch bluegill and crappie because the water is cleaner which late the sun shines through more which changes the tin of the water. The closer to spring brings on the junk water muddy from run offs 💯💯💯💯👍🏽

    Understand how water clarity and light exposure not only impacts ability to see the bait at all but to know what colors look like at different light intensities.
    Seth feider has a video on this. He hired scientists to run tests of different colors at different light intensity to see how the color might look like a different color and ability to detect bait movement.
