The character of Johnny Venture is an icon of the 70s fully realized in all of his humanity. I give a lot of credit to the writers and actors for doing that in the context of a sitcom. As many commentators on here have said they actually know guys like that in real life and this reminded them of those guys.

Brenda looks so pretty in this episode. Like her long hair and really like her outfit. The clothes and hair in Season 4 are way above average.
It's amazing how pristine Johnny's white tux is after his wanderings, especially considering how filthy his trench coat is. Ah, Hollywood!

      She looks anorexic.
A close female friend did the same. She was extremely heavy, went to Weight Watchers. But she is now 10 pounds underweight. She thinks she looks great but she doesn't.

I always found it interesting that they were able to incorporate not one but two Disney-type characters onto "Rhoda" - Nick Lobo and Johnny Venture. They kinda pushed the envelope as far as their believability but it worked quite well somehow. Richard Masur and Nick Lobo played the parts really well and they kept having them back for more episodes.

The twin towers were also in "Saturday Night Fever" for a few seconds. The north tower still had the original shorter mast--the big one was installed in 1978. I went to NYC in 1979, to celebrate New Year's eve in Times Square, and went to both towers--got lots of pics from the South tower observation, and from inside and from ground level. So sad to remember that awful day when they ceased to exist. I also had dinner one night at Windows On the World. What a view from there--not to ever be forgotten.

I don't know how Rhoda's honesty (even about her own self-admitted neuroses) could destroy any male ego. She was ahead of her time: out spoken, unafraid to admit her insecurities and fears while still being sexy and beautiful. Women would be lucky to have her for a friend (like MTM who spun off her series) and any decent man would be lucky to have her. The comments focusing on her thinness or heaviness seem pretty shallow and vapid compared to those remarks about her true character, which Valerie Harper consistently elevated to admirable heights.

This is when Rhoda show when off the Rails. It is just stupid.

Venture was cute, and had pretty hair. If he was not such an arrogant dork, he'd be good for Rhoda. He should have been on more eps.

Rhoda is such a critic, and often makes huge ordeals out of nothing.Johnny is a big dork, but he seems to have cared about Rhoda, in his own weird way.I never liked that lounge music, myself. It always seemed so corny, especially how the singers acted onstage.I always liked Sinatra and Dean Martin, those 2 were superstars and had style, plus they weren't dorks.LOL.Rhoda looks like she went on a crash diet and lost too much weight too soon.I never thought she or Brenda were overweight at anytime.

I was in my teens when this show was new, and I watched all the eps. Johnny was cute but a bore. Joe, Rhoda's former husband, was cute. I always liked Benny, too.Brenda was cute with her hair in twin braids.I like her hair long, as it was before they left Rhoda's apt. I bet Rhoda felt foolish when she stood up at the concert, thinking Johnny would mention her.

I was in my late 20s and I could not STAND Johnny, except for the "Mystery Man" episode. When I saw it again later on, and now, I absolutely love Michael's characterization of Johnny. He appears to have had such a good time. I really liked Joe, too. I also didn't care for Nick until I saw Richard Masur as Anne's boyfriend on One Day At a Time, and I grew to appreciate Richard's characterization of Nick characterization as well. I liked the character of Rhoda better on MTM than on her own show but that's hindsight. I do think I bailed before the end of the series originally.

I dislike that character Johnny. The writers must have finished with MTMS and they had gone stale with Rhoda episodes. Joe was a much better supporting character for Rhoda if the they had made him more interesting for Rhoda and the viewers.

Johnny stands up to her. He's her equal and she doesn't like it. She tries to destroy him, almost succeeds, and he turns it around in his own favor. He is terrific!

What the backstory to all this is, is the hatred of the Rock-and-Roll illiterate generation for the Great American Songbook that came before and continues, if hidden. Johnny represents Entertainment, which saw itself rightly as serving a semi-Divine purpose, of uplifting the audience. To replace it, you have evil rock demons serving themselves and their drug-addled libidos. Or drug-devouring disco dippies. That's what Rhoda is representing, she is the dishonest one. Brenda and Gary appreciate him.

By season 4, the people writing “Rhoda” were not the same people who had been writers on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

@Konga 5000 Johnny Venture may have been a cartoon character but he did represent lounge lizards (and to a degree, singer Tom Jones who always wore that huge cross and several rings, and who had a lot of sex after his shows with willing audience participants). I was in my late 20s when this was aired originally and I did NOT like Johnny, but now as a 70+ person, I find this characterization delicious. Michael appears to have had such a good time doing it, every time he appeared. I don't see that there really was anywhere to take him and her after that, though.

I don’t like the intro for this season, just cheesy or something.

I love Johnny Venture and Rhoda, Brenda, Ida, Martin and Ron Silver. Just couldn’t stand Carlton your doorman….it got too repetitive.

I hated the 70s the first time through. This episode shows what a weird dysfunctional unaware time it was.

The 70's were so much more in real life, believe me. We felt free, had good music, good TV, we went OUTSIDE in sun, snow, played in puddles in the spring rain and had the best drugs, clothes and more than u must've missed out on
